tnris.org's Introduction

tnris.org

This repository contains the content and code used to generate TTexas Geographic Information Office website: tnris.org

Building tnris.org

If you are looking for information on how to get set up to build tnris.org then you're in the right place.

Requirements

First, make sure these things are installed:

  • nodejs v16.13.1
  • npm v8.1.2

Setup

To get the build and front-end dependences, run these commands from base directory of the repository:

  • npm install

Usage

  • npm run dev to build and run the site locally. Run command from the base directory of the repository. Then visit http://localhost:8000/ to see the page.
  • npm run dist to do a production build of the site. The output static site will be dumped into the .dist folder.

If you're looking to edit some content, see our repo wiki documentation.

Updating Runtime or Dependencies

  • Updating the nodejs version, build commands, or build process requires updating the relative buildspec ".yml" file within the deployment repo and pushing the update to the artifact s3 bucket as this is the build recipe utilized by the CodeBuild CI/CD.

new header elements -- need to adjust breakpoint for mobile

less than 992px wide and greater than 767px wide

within this pixel width range the new additions to the header (>Events and Geographic Information Office) cause the header to double up in height. see below photo. need to alter breakpoint so all header elements collapse into mobile hamburger menu.

prod build warning

when running a prod build, command npm run dist, the console displays the deprecation warning below.
this is most likely occurring due to a method being used in the gulpfile. the fact that it doesn't appear when running a dev build indicates that there is a good chance it's from a method in a gulp task only being used in the prod build and not the dev build. if not, it may be webpack config related.

(node:27323) [DEP0097] DeprecationWarning: Using a domain property in MakeCallback is deprecated. Use the async_context variant of MakeCallback or the AsyncResource class instead.

investigate so we can get ahead of this deprecation.

Descriptions for Forum StratMap Session

@christoball On the agenda, please add these descriptions to this session. Thx!

Strategic Mapping - Celebrating Successful Public and Private Partnerships

Program Overview – How everyone benefits
Celebrate this 10 year milestone with us as TNRIS program specialists provide an overview of program benefits and major accomplishments gained for the Texas GIS community and the public in general. Learn how the program has enhanced the purchasing power of GIS data and services in Texas and how that translates into problems solved for the greater good of humans and our environment.

Success Stories
Hear first-hand from StratMap data, services and software providers as well as Texas government users on the direct impact the program has had on their work. Industry experts from both sectors will tell the human side of the successes they achieve over and over through this model.

What's New?
Learn about new program goals and details on the next phase of public/private partnerships in Texas. Engage with a Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) representative who will describe the new contract solicitation process and answer any questions. How can the contracting model help you as a user or as a provider? What do you want to see on the contract that's different? What improvements could be made? Following the session, program experts (actual humans) from TNRIS and DIR will be on hand to answer additional questions.

events page circles too large

smaller device/responsiveness issue:

less than 992px, event circles become too large and single stacked. this is purely cosmetic, but i think it would look better if they were smaller and in maybe two columns for smaller devices. right now they are definitely too big though.

feature branch to resolve this has been started...

Shifting up Front page, adding events feature

@KCMack I wanted to feature the keynotes on the front page in a cleaner way, so I put them on the side where the training was, but with the training it became a lot. Is it ok if we take off the training for now and bring it back after the forum, especially since the season is closed and we dont have new courses yet?

Forum agenda Welcome letter

Welcome:

Welcome to the 32nd annual Texas GIS Forum. Statewide support for geographic information has never been greater. GIS is no longer a set of tools understood by very few. Instead, geographic data and GIS concepts are recognized at the highest levels of government as important state resources. As data users and application developers, you have demonstrated the importance and the value of GIS as a critical resource to greatly benefit all Texas citizens.

Helping others gain access to information to perform their day-to-day activities is now an expectation and data sharing is “the new normal”.

Our common goal is to develop and use geographic information for the good of Texas. Across the spectrum of industries, as GIS professionals we are cooperating in new and better ways to prioritize the needs of the state. Very few states experience coordination and collaboration like Texas.

The Forum theme this year is “The Human Side of Data”. How we develop and use our data helps us understand ourselves and the environment. Ultimately, it benefits all Texans. Many speakers this year will focus on the human side of data as the theme for their talk which will demonstrate and describe our common goal.

Speaking for the GIS Community, I want to thank all sponsors who have made the important decision to support our event this year. We realize that you have choices about which events hold value to your organization. The fact that you have chosen to participate in our Forum speaks volumes! Without your commitment, this event cannot exist.

On behalf of the Texas Water Development Board and the TNRIS team, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all. Thank you for spending your week with us. We hope that you are inspired by something you see or hear and in return, we hope that you share your new-found knowledge so others may learn or be inspired. The Forum is your place to network and connect with old friends or new. The human side of GIS speaks to relationships and accomplishing great things together.

Sincerely,

Richard A. Wade
Deputy Executive Administrator and Texas State GIO

delete datacatalog/entry folder

@adambreznicky while working on maps feature branch, i noticed the datacatalog/entry folder with all the catalog markdowns is in all the branches of the repo.

Had we deleted that already? If not, we should be able to delete it no problem right?

Bio - M. Pavon

Miguel A. Pavon was born in Mexico City. His day job is the Special Projects Coordinator for Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS), a division of the Texas Water Development Board. During evenings he teaches at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin. On weekends, he attempts to catch up with family and make progress on his “honey-do list”, which is an up-hill battle.
His undergraduate degree is in Physical Oceanography from the State University of Baja California, and he holds a M.S. in Environmental Engineering with a specialty in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Monterrey Tech. Most recently he earned a certification as a Floodplain Manager from Texas Floodplain Managers Association, TFMA. @christoball

poster-submission template inconsistency

within every 'year' folder for the texas-gis-forum templates (templates/events/texas-gis-forum/<>/) is a "poster-submission.njk" template file that is never used. every event year page has a "poster-gallery" page/template and each one calls the same partial from 2015 for the poster submission form, {% include "partials/2015-forum/poster-submission.njk" %}, while the poster-submission.njk for that year goes unused.

this should be cleaned up to create consistency and remove unused files. i see 2 ways to clean it up, either:

  1. delete all the unused poster-submission.njk files from all the forum year folders. then move the shared poster-submission form template out of the 2015-forum partial folder into a properly descriptive location in the file structure. then update all the poster-gallery includes to use this new location.
  2. update all poster-gallery includes to point toward the proper poster-submission.njk for that particular year

i think solution 1 is more correct considering all poster-submission templates are exactly the same. multiple duplicate files justifies a properly, shared partial and removal of the unnecessary excess.

StratMap Contracts special announcement

@christoball Could you please post the following, perhaps in a red box, on the StratMap Contracts page? Including @ThorTheDestroyer for review. Thanks!

Special Announcement: After four years of success, the re-bid of these contracts is coming up this November 2019! For the solicitation release date and other official posting information, please see the DIR Current Contracting Initiatives site. The new Request for Offer is listed as:

_Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Hardware, Software, and Services and Information Technology (IT) Based Land Surveying Hardware, Software and Related Services

All current contract holders are required to re-submit.

Recognize Links in Map Collections

@e00o has put links in the map collection descriptions to link back to the TWDB pages for the maps. These either need to be recognized as links in the description field or added as another field in the API that we can pull from. See below.

Beta QC- Hydrography

Can we change the Overview of the Watershed Boundary Dataset picture so that when it is clicked on it will pop out larger or change the size of the image? At the moment you can't read any of the numbers for the huc boundaries.

form uploads

in migrating the contact app to api.tnris.org, testing on the Job Board form yielded buggy behavior for file uploads. although almost all uploading was removed from the site, test the uploading capabilities on any forms to verify it is still working. Forum Job Board form definitely should be supporting uploads. Georodeo speaker submissions should too although there are no instances of this currently on the site. Any other locations that support uploads on tnris.org we could test??
