In Python 2, the matplotlib backed by default is interactive. However, using this backend tries to plot figures interactively (even when plt.show() isn't used). This makes python look for a $DISPLAY variable, even when there isn't one, and can cause runtime errors.

The workaround I've found is to set the environmental variable MPLBACKEND beforehand:
export MPLBACKEND=agg

I've tried using matplotlib.use('Agg'), which doesn't seem to work. There's probably a better way of doing this, which I'll have to look into in the future.
