standwithukraine's Issues

Add Banner Explicitly denying use of software for User's repos

It would be good to get a yellow/blue banner similar to the one on the repo that explicitly denies all use of any repo under my user account to any organizations / government or private located in Russia and allied nation-states currently engaged in aggression against ukraine.

Few questions about this repo by 🇷🇺

I'm against the war, but I'm just a civilian, working on gaming related projects, so seeing this repo made me curious about following questions:

  1. What makes provided sources trusted and how they gather and validate information in the era of fakes and day-to-day misinformation even in peaceful time?
  2. What is your motivation for encouraging people to stop using Russian software?
  3. Do you plan to provide the full list of projects, technologies and products, created or maintained by Russian people?
  4. Do you suggest everyone else to stop using nginx, postgresql, google, etc. because Russian leaders decided to start all this?
  5. How do you distinct average Russian people and those, responsible for current situation?
  6. Do you also suggest to stop any interaction with any Russian living in different country?

Congratulation with success

Yesterday, Ukraine launched Tochka-U, hitting Donetsk and killing over 20 civilians.

That's a huge success for Ukraine.

What's more, photos of dead civilians in Donetsk were used as a photo of Kiev.

image

In fact, this repository is a pool of anger.

My comments are locked and deleted, which is really dictatorial:

Let me state the facts again: in the recent news, the Ukrainian army bombed the railway station in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian civilians were called human shields of the Ukrainian government. And the U.S. and NATO used the politically mindless Ukrainian government to sanction Russia. The next victims were Ukrainian civilians. Let's think, why can't Zelenski join NATO?

Outsiders see, the Ukrainian government is really a big joke these days.

Proposal: add a section on decentralised communication methods

Thank you for creating this repository! I've been using it heavily over the past weeks.

Recently, I came across https://kyiv.dcomm.net.ua/ which is a resource on decentralised messaging apps, how to set them up and how to connect to local servers set up in a couple of Ukrainian cities.

Here's the original tweet that pointed me to it - https://twitter.com/CenoBrowser/status/1496897221891178499?s=20&t=2Vb9906YCOB1Q6nuvopNvA

I also found this statement from the company that set it all up - https://equalit.ie/war-in-ukraine/

"death toll is still counting" should be "still climbing"

The banners are great, but "still counting" is odd English. The usual idiom is "still climbing", which you are already using in one place.

I'd offer a pull request, but I didn't want to break the .svg in a way I didn't understand.

Author contribution for peace

The author shifts the responsibility for the military operation to the citizens of Russia.
It would be strange if the author did not write about his contribution for peace.
Let the author write what he had been done in 2014-2022 in order to prevent this conflict.
Did the author come out with posters "No war in Donbass"?

The existence of this repository is ridiculous.

Ukraine is just a pawn between NATO and the United States. Do you face up to the cause of the war? When western countries bombed other places in the early days, wouldn't our people bleed? Opposing the war is not necessarily against Russia. The origin of this war is some western countries such as the United States.

I suggest you be more direct and say "we just want to kill Russia".

The recent double standards have really opened my eyes. No one can say who is wrong. You blame Russia, but no one dares to blame NATO countries. Standing with Ukraine? It's really ridiculous. You just stand with your own interests. Ukraine is just a pawn of NATO. Who do you stand with when NATO countries kill civilians in other countries? I suggest you be more direct and say "we just want to kill Russia".

Add NextGIS

Add NextGIS (nextgis.com) company to the list.

While they are use .com it is russia company and they products are used in Ukraine as well.

Issue with red cross

There is a plenty info on subject on the internet. Do you think we can/should remove red cross from the list?

Fighting Russian disinformation by distributing `.md` file with popular repos

Disinformation ramping up

Hey folks, as you may have already heard, most mainstream media is now banned in Russia, and the disinformation campaign inside their country is ramping up to fight common sense.

Putin is really trying to hide his own crimes in plain sight, by blaming others.

What I can do

I am maintaining a number of popular open-source packages that are downloaded millions of times worldwide. These are:

  • installed in (hundreds of )thousands production systems
  • hard to take down: critical infrastructure

I want to use them to do some good: spreading a message. Nothing malicious, just distributing information.

What we need

  • message in Russian, targeted at Russians, aligned with how they communicate (rather than transposed from another language)
  • it needs to be strong, effective, political
  • it must be something that people can copy/paste out of the context of these projects/repositories, and still makes sense to other Russians
  • it must come with a parallel English translation (for the rest of the world to understand what is going on in that file)
  • we should try and be quick - 10 days of war already

What I can't do

I can't write a political message that comes through to a population whose costume is most unbeknownst to me.
I also don't speak Russian, nor know the Cyrillic alphabet.

Call for help

I am no diplomat: I'm just trying to do my part, but asking here is possibly the best spot where I can find other people interested in redacting such a message, and then using this repository to explain how to copy it into projects, for distribution.

Feature suggestion: Javascript DOM & NPM installable

This could be made into a nice HTML/JS/CSS widget and made injectable into DOM via native Javascript.

Being able to install via NPM would be sweet, like so:

npm i standwithukraine

For injecting the SVG into the DOM, something akin to this could work:

document.getElementById('container').insertAdjacentHTML('beforeend', '<object data="banner2.svg" height="auto" width="100%" />');

Just an idea:

I am not well versed in setting up an NPM package.

Add MakeYour-Terminal-StayWithUkraine to list !

Hello , I think the one most important software that we are using is terminal , so I decided that it would nice to make project, that will make clear position !
here is a link https://github.com/alex5250/MakeYour-Terminal-StayWithUkraine
I think you had no doubts about does this project StayWithUkraine !
It will much appreciated if my project will counted !
Currently it supports only Windows PowerShell and ConEmu but the list of supported terminal emulators will increased

Three questions

Three questions:

  1. Why, if "Russia shelled the Donbass for 8 years" the troops of the LDNR are fighting shoulder to shoulder with the Russian army and liberating the territories of the republics, and the Donetsk and Luhansk residents support them?

  2. If "the Russian army shoots civilians" in the same Bucha, why the Russian armed forces issue humanitarian aid in Kherson, Melitopol and other liberated cities? Why? then shoot them?

  3. Your house is destroyed. Were there Ukrainian troops in your city at the time of the attack, such as in Mariupol?
If so, then ask them a question: why did they do this, why did they decide to cover their positions with civilians, your home?

And, just the attitude towards captured soldiers
Ukrainian vs Russian.. [redacted] What is closer to you?

Remove Telegram

Telegram is not a russian project. While its founder and CEO Pavel Durov is russian, he is strongly against russian government and their special services like FSB and Roscomnadzor.

Pavel's previous project, VK social network, was taken from him by force, so he is escaped, started new life and never, never will be in pro-putin mood.

Troubles with docs/Boycott.md

Is there any reason for Google not being in the Boycott list, and also not being in the allow list? It seems like it's been forgotten at all.

I also don't see how are Telegram and Nginx considered Russian products (and much less businesses), apart from being vaguely originated from Russia (as well as Google).

There are several companies on the boycott list that I'm not familiar with, so I have for sure missed some of them.

Also, there are indeed some missing companies that are both definitely Russian and a business (e.g. Tinkoff, Alfa and other banks).

What's written next are my pure opinionated thoughts with almost no intended facts underneath.

As a developer in open-source community, I believe nothing should be deleted or suspended forever. And what I want much less is digging through all of my dependencies to see if they have any Russian origins. Even if I wanted to do this, I would probably also write a script that automatically turns every package and repository affected by the boycott back to stable functioning after Russian leadership is suspended.

I don't consider Google, Telegram, and Nginx Russian products. I would as well be interested to know how "Russian" should something be to be included in the boycott. Does something that was not Russian but is now in Russia become boycotted (if a coin from another country is taken to Russia), and vice-versa (if a Russian-originated open-source developer takes a flight to Florida and ditches his Russian passport).

I think concepts and recipes should not, for sure, be included in the boycott, like dumplings or beef stroganoff. This includes all of the Russian-originated open-source software (because source code is a recipe of some kind).

Unrelated to the issue: we have a saying here, "Moscow is not Russia" (can be googled easily). After 24 Feb, my brain just asked "Well, if it's not Russia, then what it actually is?". The answer made many people laugh and since lives in the location field of my GitHub profile: "Moscow, Ukraine".

Paypal takes 5 months to transfer money to Ukraine

@vshymanskyy I tried to donate to Army SOS as you recommended, but I made the mistake of using PayPal. After I submitted payment PayPal stated the money will not be available until September 5th! PayPal will not let me cancel. Please make people aware so they can use a different payment method. Best wishes for you and your family. I am a big fan of Blynk.

JetBrains is openly supporting Ukraine

JetBrains openly supports Ukraine and condemns the war. They also have employees located in the Ukraine.

Their CEO (who is Russian) is also openly condemning the war.

I don't think it's fair to punish somebody who openly condemns their governments actions. They are not responsible for the war, Putin is. The same goes for anybody on this list, IMO they should be considered innocent until proven guilty. Yes, not buying these products has a small effect on Russias economy, negligible for Putin, but significant for the developers.

Did you take into account the actions of the Ukrainian military while war in Donbas before suggesting to help them?

Lets make it clear. I'm against this war and I would like, at least, to spread your message (e.g. via my GH account and friends). Even if it will cost me a jail.

But more than 172 children had been injured or killed while war in Donbas, among other civilian loses. See e.g. this or this memorial, 66 names listed. I'm afraid, but most of this - due to shells and mines of the Ukrainian military. You suggest to support that too. How this is different from the support for actions of Putin's forces?

Illogical moves in ToRussianPeople.md

За обычный призыв к миру сейчас можно получить несколько лет тюрьмы.
...
Вы можете сделать выбор НЕ МОЛЧАТЬ.

or

You can be jailed for multiple years for simply calling for peace.
...
You can choose NOT TO BE SILENT.

Does this mean the only purpose of this text is just "be morons or go to jail, you choose what"?

Speaking of myself, I don't support this war at all (considering its initiation just a extremely foolish idea of Putin), but even for me these words sound plainly nonsense.

If you REALLY want to convince some Russians, try to figure out what people can do in the situation when they have absolutely no control over the government (you probably live in a country with this control, and you can't even imagine it is even possible; but in Russia and Belarus, it is a confirmed fact), and don't ask them to go to jail with absolutely no result.

Btw, banning software written and supported by Russian developers (who have nothing in common with government's actions), looks very weird too. I HIGHLY recommend to assume Russian developers don't support any side of the conflict (because we don't have enough convincing confirmed information from either side), unless they stated one or another--instead of assuming that they support this war unless they stated they do not. If they confirm that they support the war, you may treat it as an offense and ban them if you consider them enemies; but you should NOT oblige them to support Ukraine to avoid throwing off of community. Even if you consider supporting Russian invasion a crime, neutrality is not a crime and never shall be.
