hurricane's Introduction

Hi There, this is Jinnan

I am a front-end developer who is interested in writing apps using TypeScript, React and Redux, ArcGIS API for JavaScript and Vanilla JS.

At Esri, I lead the front-end development of the Living Atlas team, I also build apps to show people what can be done using ready-to-use contents on Living Atlas along with other Esri technologies.

hurricane's Issues

update precipitation graph

For the precipitation graph we would like to have the bars show the totals by the time and then add a faint line to indicate rainfall accumulation.

Track lines @ 1:144,448

Hi,

Can we add the track lines in at 1:144,448 scale? For now with a .50 white line?

Curious, is it possible to have the track highlight in yellow, as well as the yellow dot, at this scale when the user clicks on it? This might look bad, but I thought I would ask first.

Thanks,

EM

Background

Can you adjust the transparency of the background behind the charts and tables to be more opaque?

WIND GUST - Section

  1. Wind Gust the > and <= signs need simplification

  2. Wind Gust hovering over you get text about breeze, gale, etc.

Hurricane Info Card

please go forward with the card and filling in the information available (wind speed, wind gust).

Feedback/Comments

Hi Jinnan,

Here are some of the answers to things we discussed.

  1. Yes please go forward with the card and filling in the information available (wind speed, wind gust).

  2. Here is the URL for the map: https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=c3f468ffb8ba43f09f5a4276e347311d
NOTE: I am still adjusting the hurricane watches and warnings and saving as I go.

  3. The two new red RGB values are:
    Hurricane 1 & 2: D32C2C
    Hurricane 3, 4, & 5: A31717

  4. For the precipitation graph we would like to have the bars show the totals by the time and then add a faint line to indicate rainfall accumulation

  5. We would like to have MPH/KPH for the wind speed graph instead of descriptions.

  6. Can we change the look and feel of the Communication pie? Can it be a rectangle "gauge" type of look? Like this:

Communication

I owe you colors for:

  1. Precipitation Graph (1 x bar color and 1 x accumulation line)
  2. Wind Gust Graph (1 x Line Color)
  3. Population (3 x Colors)
  4. Communication (2 x Colors)

Thank you so much!
EM

colors related

The two new red RGB values are:

  • Hurricane 1 & 2: D32C2C
  • Hurricane 3, 4, & 5: A31717

@emilyebba still need to provide:

  • Precipitation Graph (1 x bar color and 1 x accumulation line)
  • Wind Gust Graph (1 x Line Color)
  • Population (3 x Colors)
  • Communication (2 x Colors)

Communication Section - Language

Hi,

I am rerunning some enrichment for the language bar in the communication section. Once that is completed I will send you the layer. The explanation will change (currently it says “Speak Only English” and “Other Language”.

Dan and I discussed this and were able to find another enrichment layer that will give more to the language story.

Once I have the layer and the language I will let you know.

Thank you,

EM

wind speed graph

We would like to have MPH for the wind speed graph instead of descriptions

FORECASTED STORM INTENSITY - Section

  1. Please capitalize Maximum Wind Speed

  2. Can we have KPH reading directly under the MPH? It would be directly under the MPH in the same column just a row under it?

About/Info Section for App

Here is what I prepared. Dan has not confirmed yet, but I wanted to give you this for a placeholder. The only question I have is at the end, do you want to list what you used to make the app since I mention AGOL?

About this app
The HurricaneAware app is intended to provide information about the potential impacts of tropical storms in the United States. The data shown here from the Living Atlas are authoritative U.S. government sources, including:

National Weather Service forecasts for hurricanes, precipitation, and wind gusts.

U.S. Census - derived American Community Survey demographic data

App use
Click on a location in the U.S. to see the timing of weather impacts along with affected populations. You can also individually select a storm to find out detailed forecast information.

While track forecasts are provided for areas outside the U.S., other weather forecasts and demographic data is not available.

This app was designed by Esri’s Jinnan Zhang, Dan Pisut, and Emily Meriam in ArcGIS Online and (whatever Jinnan uses).

Selection Dot

Please build with a Yellow FFF257 with 50% transparency and a white dot like this:

POPULATION - Section

  1. Comma in the population number (3400 should be 3,400)

  2. Please use this color for Population + 65 years= 061E33

Map Labels

Can you make the hurricane name italic and increase the white halo a bit? Please see the images in the Issue for Hurricane Symbol Size. Thank you.
