You've probably noticed this already, but:

When multiple files are selected, let "show in finder" open a finder window with all files selected (this would make it easier to open a group in Marked, etc.).

This hindrance also applies to Google Chrome, and I wonder why this is the case in full screen apps. It is annoying because I sometimes rely on Spotlight for research.

nvALT 2.1 (72), OS 10.6.8, German localisation

The autolinker fails intermittently on [link](url) format links. Works fine if you add spacing before the first parenthesis, but I'd like to figure out where the pattern is that's affecting this.

In the Preferences, the last option "Show menu bar icon" is a few pixels off to the right. The checkbox is more off than the text, or so it seems.

I tested nvALT 2.1b (72) with German localisation.

I have been receiving the folllowing in my Console:
"11-09-26 6:31:54.014 PM nvALT: Tagsets differ. Updating."
I get 8 messages like this every 5 minutes while nvAlt is open. This is 2.1 (74) on Lion.

I know what caused this to start: I manually edited my html files representing the notes (I know, I know). But I'd like to know if there is a way to remove this message, or to rebuild the database without destroying metadata.

hi Brett, thanks for nvAlt, I really love it. However I noticed some strange behavior on Lion. I am using nvAlt Version 2.1 (74) in which the find dialog doesn't open. Either from the menu or using keyboard shortcuts won't show the actual dialog. I reinstalled, but that solve this issue either.

When scrolling, the previously occupied pixels of the scrollbar are not cleaned before it's drawn to its new position. The scrollbar increasingly gets darker until you get a dark-gray block. Still you can tell where the scrollbar handle is, if you look really close. -- This is a rather old bug I already reported via e-mail. What seems new: after switching active windows which overlay nvALT, the scrollbar handle appears light-gray again, alas the rest of the scrollbar remains dark.

Preferrably in a format that would make it easy to parse. JSON maybe ?

I have recently been trying out simplenote and a variety of desktop clients. I have noticed that nvAlt (nor nv) show the tags from Simplenote.

Make my life easier.. we could use a [command/option] + return to prevent the double space or, the other way around.

does not seem to work in version 2.1b (65)

I have notes on the left side.

Note Previews are (usually) turned off.

I tried turning them on today, and nothing happened. I had to quit and
restart for changes to be noted.

Happened both with menu or with keyboard shortcut.

Other OpenMeta tagging apps seem to be more forgiving on e.g. umlaut characters. NV seems to be stricter with the encoding on both the content and the tags.

NV distinguishes between these tags. This is noticeable when your tag e.g. starts with "privat", you type these letters and get two similar-looking options: https://skitch.com/divinedominion/fjfqc/nstextviewcompletionwindow

This makes tagging across applications inconsistent. 3rd party apps seem not to distinguish the two alternatives.

Reproduction

I got a tag privat/öffentlich. To reproduce, just abcööö suffices.

Try to copy&paste these lines into a NV test document:

The second line should look "thicker". (Should=behaviour that is not acceptable but is expected due to this "bug". Usually, there should not be any difference at all)

1. It does look thicker
   • create 2 test files in NV. Tag each with just one of these tags.
   • create a 3rd file, begin tagging wtih "abc" and see that 2 alternatives pop up, as above
2. It does not
   This encoding may get lost when I submit the form. So if they do not look different, the following steps should reproduce that.
   • create 2 test files in NV. Tag one with abcööö
   • take a 3rd party tagging tool. Ironic Software's "TagIt" (free) works as well as "Tags".
   • tag the second file with abcööö using the 3rd party tool
   • open NV, copy the tag of file 2 and paste it into the NV note body. Paste the tag of the first file adjacently. They should differ by now.

Create a third file. Enter a tag, typing "abc". Two possibilities should be visible.

First of all I like to thanks you for NV which is a great software that I now use every day (with the simple note sync).

I have a sugestion related to the use of tags. As far as I understand, Tags are only used for spotlight search and are searched as all the note contents in NV.

Sugestion : Why add a "tag filtering" filed in NV ?
I could be below or on the right of the main search field.
The interest would be to restrict the search to only the notes that include the tags in the "filter" field.

Personnally it would be of great interest. Let me explain why. All my life (personnal and work) is linked to "music". I'm a researcher on brain & music, I'm teaching in this field and in my personnal life I play music, I listen to music etc..
Thus I have hundreds of notes where the word music appears in. When tagging my note I often have the "Music" tag but it is completed with other tags such as "Course", "Research", "Guitar", "score"...

If I want to see list of all my notes that I have used to prepare my "courses", I can search with Music and Course but if these words also appears in other notes I will have to much results.

Thus I propose to introduce this "tag filtering" possibility. Tags would be considered as means of classifying information. Of course, the normal functionning of NV is preserved if nothing is introduced in the filtering field.

What do you think of that proposition ? Is there a place where I can submit it ?

*Darryl Thomas has done the development for the sync. It's in preliminary stages, but is working. It does not handle incremental/progressive sync yet, so very large note collections with many tags can see unusually long sync times.

Known issues

There are several known issues that have not been resolved:

• Spaces behavior @done
• white resize handle when scrollbar shows in edit panel
• Preferences crashes in some circumstances @done
• Print preview always names file "Preview" or "Locked" @done

Resetting preferences

If you have any trouble with crash on startup or when opening preferences (and you store your notes as files on disk):

1. Quit nvALT
2. Rename your notes folder
3. Create a new folder with the original name
4. Run nvALT
5. Create a single test note and re-adjust your note storage preferences
6. Copy everything from your renamed notes folder except for any files named "Interim Note Changes" or "Notes & Settings[.*]" back into the new folder
7. let nvALT catch up with the changes, answering any dialogs which pop up.

Tags will be preserved in this process, thanks to OpenMeta.

There is a bug in NValt 2.1 in the sync with simplenote. If I use a plus character ('+') a note edited in NValt, it does not get sent to simplenote. Plus characters work fine the other way (simplenote -> NValt).

nvALT doesn't play nice with OS X Spaces and doesn't allow users to control it's behavior. Bad nvALT. Bad.

The hold-control-for-temporary-preview was a neat idea, but it's a hinderance for folks who make frequent use of Emacs keybindings in nvALT.

In Mac OS X 10.7, vertical text layout is supported by both lower level (CoreText) and upper level (Cocoa). Now that bidi has been supported in nvALT, I'm wondering if vertical layout can be implemented. (it will just cost a few lines of code in Cocoa, just as easy as bi-di. TextEdit.app's source code can be used as a reference to implement this. see Format-> Make Layout Vertical)

In it's simplest form, my request might be accomplished by a keybinding toggle between the current file and the last edited file.

A more advanced form would be if NV supported One Display/Multiple Files(or Buffers) features similar to /usr/bin/vi,emacs,screen

where, for example, the vi :e file2, :e#, and :n and :rew commands, or equivalent emacs commands plus completion allow a user quickly edit/transverse multiple files/buffers while sharing one screen, and all via the keyboard.

Everything I made bold becomes plain text after sync.

Problem : When you're writing, say, Markdown, a better use of the of the Bold command would be to surround the selected text with **. And so on.

That kind of functionality would make working with both markups way easier.

The preview mode could control this new behavior, but it seems a bit weird. Maybe rename "Format" to "Formatting" and "Preview" to "Format" ? This way, a third format (plain text or rich text or HTML) could resolve the question of what to do with the standard commands.

Even more awesome, when you drag and drop an image from a browser, it could insert itself with the correct syntax automatically. But that belongs to another issue I guess.

Somewhere along the line the tab width reverted from 8 spaces to 5. Changing it again seems like just messing with people more, so I think a preference item would make sense.

If you click at the bottom edge of on an entry in the notes list, you can add or edit tags. However, the text is unreadable as it is white on white. Once you hit return, the text becomes legible again. This seems to happen whether a user-scheme or a factory provided color scheme is picked.

Of course, adding a tag via the menu Note.. Tag works just fine.

Sometimes when I am typing into the filename or tags area it can be very hard to read, depending on the color scheme.

If I create a reference to a file with a relative path (e.g. "./img/logo.gif") in a Markdown document, the images is not rendered. Instead it shows a question mark.
If I use a full path, it shows as expected.

I set my content width to 678px. Whenever I markup longer notes with lists, I manually insert line breaks and format the lists nicely. Add a lot of body text to the note after the list and the app inevitably will have to enable scrolling. When the scrollbar appears, the content width is affected: long lines in lists are shifting the last word to the next line, i.e. they do automatic line breaks to preserve 678px note body width. This means the scrollbar compresses the note body on its appearance.

I guess (hope!) this is not intended :)

Select text, type in a bracket, text will be surrounded by brackets. The cursor should not move but select the text again with the brackets, so one can type [[ to surround a portion of text with double brackets.

As the title states -- neither auto-pairing nor "mark text and press bracket key to enclose text in brackets" works [EDIT: with < and >](is there a short name for the last feature? :))

I use nvALT 2.7 (71) with German localisation and NEO2 keyboard layout. (other layouts work neither)

1. Create an empty directory on your Mac
2. Start nvALT
3. Go to Preferences, Notes
4. Change "Read notes from folder:" to the empty directory you made.
5. Change "Store and read notes on disk as" from "Single Database" to "Plain Text Files"
6. nvALT crashses at this point for me.

If you create a note between step 4 and 5, the application doesn't crash.

I'm guessing it's trying to convert notes in step 5 but failing because there aren't any notes to convert.

When I lock note to preview, the Preview content is not auto-updated when I edit the note.

I added nvALT to Login Items and checked the Hide checkbox but nvALT doesn't hide at startup. Notational Velocity does hide.

Using nvAlt on Lion 10.7.2 in the preferences dialog Under the Notes tab, Storage sub-tab, if storing in plain text, there are selections for "recognize individual files with attributes" selection box, and text, txt, utf8, & taskpaper are listed by default. There does not appear to be any way to add another type, only to remove ( - button) and check (√ button), but the button is secretly there, just invisible.

I've spent most of my day searching for a simple plain text editor that will display a list of files and simply and quickly allow me to edit and create new files. Notational Velocity and this NV fork are the only applications I've found that do this simply without my having to go through multiple steps of using a file browser to select a file, etc.

However, NVAlt isn't the only application I'd use to edit my files, and thus I do not wish to keep hundreds of plain text files all within one directory on the file system. I use apps like Scrivener and PlainText on iPad to work with plain text files that exist within a directory hierarchy on the file system.

Tags are great, but again, NVAlt isn't the only app I'll be using. Many other apps in my workflow don't support tags... and even then, I'd prefer my files to be able to be placed within subfolders so it's easier to view them when working from the terminal and many other apps. PlainText does a good job of this on iPad... I would love the same implementation on OSX but none exist.

I don't know Objective C or have the time to learn it now, otherwise I'd help with this.

Auto-pairing and surround selected text should be possible for * and _ as well!

TextMate style: with no text selected, an open bracket inserts a closing bracket, too. Whon I immediately delete (backspace) the opening bracket, the closing bracket should be removed as well.

nvALT 2.1b (70)

Keeping the note body readable in a chars-per-line fashion (e.g. like iA Writer). 60--80 chars should suffice (60 for text drafting, 80 for a more shell'ish feeling and support of lists etc). Works best in a Markdown-environment with monospace font.

The ability to navigate through the notes edited from starting the application would be helpful. This would function much like forward-back in most browsers.

I have mentioned this on Superuser.com (http://superuser.com/questions/349485) in which this rambling discussion was mentioned: scrod#64. I think it's a much more likely feature for nvALT than NV.

Thoughts? Interest?

I hadn't updated nvALT since June, so I did it today. And for some reason, doing so caused twenty-three old notes to suddenly become marked as modified that day. It seems that all of these notes are associated with at least one of three tags. (But not all tags associated with those twenty-three notes were affected.)

I presume it's a bug in the nvALT update process? Or perhaps not. What I'm really curious about is whether I can change the "Date Modified" somewhere, so I can get them back into some semblance of order. Fortunately, the change didn't happen over on the Simplenote side, so I know where in time they belong.

Right. Now I'm lost. The lines are gone and I can't get them to reappear.

It is possible to export a note with the ending .txt, but not .md (I'm using Lion). If you change the ending to .md in the save dialog, it always adds .txt, either hidden or visible.
