notunes's Issues

Great app! Here is a screenshot to turn off iTunes

Hello tombonez,

You deserve an award for this. I hated iTunes for interrupting my work.

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like when you turn on the noTunes app (menubar version) and block iTunes.

I thought the screen shots would be helpful
The solid black circle is blocking iTunes.
If the circle is clear, iTunes can pop up.

not working on mojave

On Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6 the app launches but has no effect. iTunes still launches with media key presses, whatever state the menu button is in.
I tested with both the menu and non-menu versions.
Am I missing something?

Pass file to replacement application?

By running the command below I managed to get Notunes to open my preferred app, Adobe Audition, instead of Apple Music when I doubleclick .wav and .mp3 files. But Audition doesn't actually open the file.

defaults write digital.twisted.noTunes replacement /Applications/Adobe\ Audition\ 2024/Adobe\ Audition\ 2024.app

Adapt to macos13

macOS13 sometimes does not work, the specific scene cannot be reproduced

Thank-you for being awesome 🎉

Just wanted to make an issue to say thanks for putting this together. Everytime I connected my bluetooth earphones Apple Music would open up and I'd need to shut it down. Now I don't. Good work.

That is all. :)

Music occasionally launches on Ventura 13.5.2

After a recent upgrade to 13.5.2 (22G91), Apple Music will still launch occasionally. Most of the time I get the suppressed "dock bounce", but sometimes Music will launch fully.

Can't open or close noTunes

Hello! I downloaded noTunes and it certainly did kill Music's abiity to launch, but I can't turn noTunes on or off. Also I can't tell if it's even active. When I click on it, I get no menu bar. I can check the contents but it doesn't show up as an app on my MacBook Pro. And also I can't send it to the Trash because it says it's open... Your help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Update for MacOS Catalina

Catalina removed iTunes to create the new “Music” app—can this be updated to block that as well?

Thank you

Hey @tombonez I just wanted to thank you for creating this. It drives me crazy when iTunes launches unexpectedly. Thank you.

noTunes... or noJunkApps?

First I'd like to echo the majority of closed issues just saying thank you for creating this.

Have you considered extending this app (or making a different app) to prevent a selection of the built-in junk apps, e.g. Books, Photos, News, etc.? Maybe as like a dropdown menu with checkboxes?

Thanks again for your work. This is a must-have.

Apple Music still opens but immediately closes, making the Dock jump

Firstly, this is great. My headphones have a touch pad on one ear to pause the music, but iTines intercepts that and decides to open. So this app kills it. Almost. I find that Music.app still opens but is then killed, and this makes the dock jump.

It may be a limitation of the listener approach in the code of your app. It seems odd that Apple allows the Dock to show the app launching but then other listeners are notifier and get a chance to interact with it and kill it I would expect the notifications to be sent before the Dock is notified).

Anyway, unsure if there is a fix, just logging it.

Add option to only replace default music player

noTunes lets you change the default music player with the command "defaults write digital.twisted.noTunes replacement /Applications/YOUR_MUSIC_APP.app", as stated on the readme. However, this is really the only feature I'm using noTunes for, so I'm wondering if it's possible for this functionality to be isolated, or if there's already another app that can do this.

Set YouTube Music as default music player?

In the Readme, you give instructions on how to set an alternative application as the default music player. Unfortunately, YouTube Music doesn't have an application—it's a URL. Could you indicate whether it's possible to set a webapp as the default music player and, if so, how?

Thank you <3

Sorry to make an issue for it but I wanted to reach out in someway and say thanks.

MacPorts package

Hi there, I just found out the app and it works great, thanks for building this ❤️

After #15, I'm wondering if a macports package is in the cards. I'd be happy to help out but I would need some guidance on the build process, since macports compiles everything from source

monterey issues

installs from brew successfully, but does not show menu icon, or appear the defaults if you try to restore/find it.

I'm running Monterey 12.1 on a 2018 mac book pro.

let me know if theres any testing i can do to help diagnose this.

Add option to automatically restart notunes on login

Would be great to have an option to add automatically notunes within the apps that automatically start on a system reboot.
I added manually it under Settings > Users & Groups > Login item.
Would be easier to use to have this option within the app itself.

Blocking Music only?

Hey @tombonez,

I'd potentially be very interested in a version of noTunes which blocked the Music app but not iTunes (and would absolutely be happy to discuss payment for your time on this). If you'd have any interest in that, then let me know how best we could talk privately.

Thanks very much,
Duncan

Can't hide menu bar icon

Great tool.

Disabling the menu bar icon doesn't work for me, unfortunately. If I perform a right-click, it has the same effect as a left-click. The menu doesn't show up.

Tried it on Monterey & High Sierra.

Modifying the property list is not an option because it's not being created on both systems.

A good workaround for me would be to just use an older version which has no menu bar icon. It's not an option, though, because of the expired certificate. Is there a way to replace it manually with the one from 3.2+?

Edit:
I'm using a trackpad, not a mouse. If I enable the "secondary click" (two fingers), I'm able to open the menu. I'm also able to hide the icon that way on Monterey (not on High Sierra). Apparently, the right-click using command and the right-click using two-fingers create different signals.

Stop VoiceOver

what about VoiceOver? no way to close hotkey( COMMOND+F5), it conflict with IDEA.

Apple Music still shows on recent dock

Gotta start with the big thank you!
Clicking the microphone button on my headphones (Bose 700) launching Music while on a video-call was horrible.

This application mostly works, but I've noticed the Music app still shows app as a recent on the dock (see attachment)
I've already google it and apparently there's some way of messing with plist and editing stuff to hide a certain app of ever showing up, but I wonder if there's a automatically way of achieving it with your app.

Screenshot 2021-12-02 at 14 34 30

So the behaviour I've noticed is:

  • Music is not in the dock (I never use it)
  • In a meeting / video-call
  • Click the microphone button to mute/unmute myself (it mutes only on the headphone itself, not on Teams)
  • I check the Dock, and the Music show up there as "recent"

Running on macOs BigSur 11.3.1 / intel hardware

Thanks!

Just installed in Ventura, Music still appearing

Mac OS: 13.2.1 (22D68)

I followed steps here:
#20

  • Icon is in menu bar
  • Icon has the "cancel" 🚫 overlay
  • Either with a default app (Spotify) or with defaults deleted as in the above steps

The behavior is as follows:

NoTunes Config Spotify Closed Spotify Open
No default app Pressing play does nothing, but repeated presses eventually opens Music Pressing play does nothing, and eventually opens Music, unless one first manually starts Spotify with the space key or clicking Play
Spotify default app Pressing play opens spotify, but repeated presses do not stat music and eventually Music starts Pressing play does nothing, and eventually opens Music, unless one first manually starts Spotify with the space key or clicking Play

Run on startup

Love the app, makes my life easier.

How would I go about running this on startup?

Asking as not a power user. I know if it was in the dock then I could add it to startup items by right clicking.

noTunes & remote control daemon

This is a question, not a bug report. I hope that's fine.

In addition to using noTunes, I unloaded remote control daemon (via launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.rcd.plist).

If I remember it correctly, using both makes sense. By unloading remote control daemon (rcd), the Music app oftentimes doesn't even get launched (so there's no "Dock hopping"). noTunes, on the other hand, quickly kills the Music app if it is launched by an event that has nothing to do with rcd.

I'm wondering now if this is correct, i.e. if there are in fact non-rcd-related events that lead to unwanted launches of the Music app. If yes, what are these events?

(I'm aware that unloading rcd, unlike using noTunes, disables the media keys. This is fine for me. I'm trying to understand if using both methods at the same time actually makes sense.)

Edit:
As far as I can tell, the virtual media keys (Control Center) are not covered by unloading rcd. That's enough for me to keep using both methods simultaneously. I'm going to ghost-mode now. Feedback on this is still much appreciated, though.

Fn keys are only partially working after installing noTunes and changing the default to spotify

I installed noTunes. I ran defaults write digital.twisted.noTunes replacement /Applications/Spotify.app. After I ran that, I also ran osascript -e 'quit app "noTunes"' and then re-opened noTunes just to make sure my defaults change was applied.
The problem I'm having is that the f8 (play) button on my keyboard does correctly toggle over to the Spotify app now, instead of launching iTunes. But that's all it does. If I hit the button again to play music, nothing happens. In fact, none of the function controls (previous track, next track, play) work anymore.
This is true for both my Apple Magic Keyboard and also for my Keychron K4 Pro. Same behavior.

Disable Apple Music as default audio player/editor

Yep, this works to keep Apple Music from opening. Great, actually!

But, I cannot actually assign other audio editors to open files except once per session. Once I let the computer fall asleep, and start working with audio files again, noTunes works - but I cannot open the file by double-clicking in another app that I assign to open them. It just doesn't open anything, except for that ghost of Apple Music that tries to pop up in the dock.

How to I get Apple Music to just 'go away', all the way?
