OVMF can't handly large VMs with qemu/kvm and linux >= 4.2

I'm using qemu 2.4.0 to start a Windows-VM with OVMF (Commit 8b4c856). After updating my kernel from 4.1.6 to 4.2.0 I noticed that it wouldn't start anymore.

Here's the output I get:

The error only happens if I try to start a VM with lots of CPUs and/or RAM. This is the stripped down command to reproduce it:

qemu-system-x86_64 \
-enable-kvm \
-smp 8 \
-m 8192 \
-drive if=pflash,format=raw,readonly,file=/path/to/OVMF_CODE_x86_64.fd \
-drive if=pflash,format=raw,file=/path/to/OVMF_VARS_x86_64.fd

It is not always reproducable, sometime a VM with 44 CPUs and 1G works, sometimes it doesn't. These are the maximum SMP/MEM combinations I still got to work(sometimes, at least):

  • 44/1G
  • 33/2G
  • 10/4G
  • 5/8G
  • 3/16G

I'm using qemu 2.4.0 to start a Windows-VM with OVMF (Commit 8b4c856). After updating my kernel from 4.1.6 to 4.2.0 I noticed that it wouldn't start anymore.

Here's the output I get:

The error only happens if I try to start a VM with lots of CPUs and/or RAM. This is the stripped down command to reproduce it:

qemu-system-x86_64 \
-enable-kvm \
-smp 8 \
-m 8192 \
-drive if=pflash,format=raw,readonly,file=/path/to/OVMF_CODE_x86_64.fd \
-drive if=pflash,format=raw,file=/path/to/OVMF_VARS_x86_64.fd

It is not always reproducable, sometimes a VM with 44 CPUs and 1G works, sometimes it doesn't. Here are the maximum SMP/MEM combinations I was able to get to work(sometimes, at least):

  • 44/1G
  • 33/2G
  • 10/4G
  • 5/8G
  • 3/16G

If I boot back to linux 4.1.6, I am unable to reproduce the issue, therefore it must be caused by a recent kvm kernel change. However since it doesn't happen with seabios(i can create really insane SMP/MEM combinations there) I'm assuming it's an OVMF bug.

shifting a negative signed value is undefined

@ajfish

cloned from #30 (comment)

It is compiler defined behavior in the older world, and that is why clang has added the warning. I also see the error in the base Tools as it has a case of shifting -1.

https://github.com/tianocore/edk2/blob/master/BaseTools/Source/C/Common/FvLib.c

//
// Get next file, compensate for 8 byte alignment if necessary.
//
*NextFile = (EFI_FFS_FILE_HEADER *) ((((UINTN) CurrentFile - (UINTN) mFvHeader + GetFfsFileLength(CurrentFile) + 0x07) & (-1 << 3)) + (UINT8 *) mFvHeader);

OVMF: Assertion failure in BBSsupport.c

I'm trying to create a UEFI VM for GPU passthrough, but it seems like OVMF has problems booting any media. I get to an OVMF menu even though I specify cdrom booting. When I select "Boot manager" in the menu, OVMF halts due to an assertion failure (see the bottom of the log).

The command I run to cause the fault:

cp /usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/OVMF_VARS-pure-efi.fd /tmp/my_vars.fd
qemu-system-x86_64 \
  -enable-kvm \
  -m 2048 \
  -cpu host \
  -drive if=pflash,format=raw,readonly,file=/usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd \
  -drive if=pflash,format=raw,file=/tmp/my_vars.fd \
  -boot d \
  -cdrom /home/qemu/vfio/en_windows_10_education_x64_dvd_6848120.iso \
  -debugcon file:debug.log -global isa-debugcon.iobase=0x402

The output log in its entirety (sorry for the length, I'm not sure what might be important):

Failed to start command .\SecMain on Ubuntu

Hi all,

When I trying to use build run command to run the UEFI emulator, I've got the following failed information:
image

However, if I run the ./EmulatorPkg/build.sh run, the GOP Window will be started as follows:
image

Any difference between these two command? And why the build run command will failed?

Build failed

ShellPkg: mv command from NULL directory causes an assertion and async abort

Attempt to use mv command to move a file when there is no current directory causes an assertion in String.c. Example:
Shell> mv fs2:\file1 fs2:\file2
Assertion
ASSERT /uefi/MdePkg/Library/BaseLib/String.c(173): ((UINTN) String & 0x00000001) == 0

The reason for this assertion is in ShellPkg\Library\UefiShellLevel2CommandsLib\Mv.c,
ValidateAndMoveFiles() function.
First the current directory (Cwd) is being taken, and then with no check
FullCwd = AllocateZeroPool(StrSize(Cwd) + sizeof(CHAR16));
The assertion (for debug) and synchronous exception (for release) is caused by StrSize validation that the parameter is not NULL. I suggest to check before assigning FullCwd:

**FullCwd = NULL;

if (Cwd != NULL) {
FullCwd = AllocateZeroPool(StrSize(Cwd) + sizeof(CHAR16));
if (FullCwd == NULL) {
return SHELL_OUT_OF_RESOURCES;
} else {
StrCpyS(FullCwd, StrSize(Cwd)/sizeof(CHAR16)+1, Cwd);
StrCatS(FullCwd, StrSize(Cwd)/sizeof(CHAR16)+1, L"");
}
}
**
Then before freeing of the FullCwd using FreePool() it would be necessary to check if it was assigned.

Thanks,
Vladimir

OVMF doesn't respect -acpitable QEMU parameter

QEMU allows to insert various vendor-specific ACPI tables, such as SLIC and MSDM, by -acpitable command-line parameter. SeaBIOS adds this tables to ACPI information, but OVMF doesn't.

[ArmVirtPkg] aarch64 assert failure in ArmPlatformPrePeiCore PrePeiCore.c(83)

Using edk2 git master as of 2016-03-27 (877c0a9) a debug AARCH64 build of ArmVirtPkg (using gcc 5.3.1) fails to run, with the assert failure:

ASSERT [ArmPlatformPrePeiCore] /home/bcran/workspace/edk2/ArmPlatformPkg/PrePeiCore/PrePeiCore.c(83): ((UINTN)PeiVectorTable & ((1 << 11)-1)) == 0

The command to launch it (with qemu 2.5.50) is:

qemu-system-aarch64 -m 1G -cpu cortex-a57 -M virt -bios Build/ArmVirtQemu-AARCH64/DEBUG_GCC49/FV/QEMU_EFI.fd -serial stdio

OVMF release build with GCC 5.2 runs out of space [master]

When OVMF from github master (as of 2016-01-24) is built using ./OvmfPkg/build.sh -a X64 -t GCC49 -b RELEASE, the build fails because the image is too big to fit in the 1MB rom.

Passing in -DFD_SIZE_2MB to use a 2MB rom works around the problem.
OVMF is being built on an OpenSuSE Tumbleweed system with GCC 5.2.1.

use-after-free in StdLib ParsePath()

On Path.c:360 (UDK2014.SP1 branch):

free(MPath); /* Caller doesn't want it so let MPath go free */

But since MPath isn't set to NULL, the else statement on line 379 can be executed which then uses MPath:

/* This is a mapped path. */
Status = __DevSearch( MPath, NULL, &Node);

Build Failed on Linux

While I was trying to build against the last git repo version I've encountered the following error:
edk2/MdePkg/Library/UefiDevicePathLib/DevicePathFromText.c:2796:12: error: pointer targets in assignment differ in signedness [-Werror=pointer-sign]
AsciiStr = WiFiDp->SSId;

Cheers.

Incorrect MBR primary partition numbering in PartitionInstallMbrChildHandles()

UEFI spec says that MBR primary partitions should be numbered by their MBR partition table entry index [1..4]. Current implementation gives primary partitions consecutive numbers, skipping type 0x00, type 0xEE, and zero sized partitions. Implementation should give partitions numbers based on entry index. I.e. Index + 1 instead of PartitionNumber++.

Conf/tools_def.txt gets parsed every time a GUIDed tool is searched for

I updated BaseTools/BinWrappers/PosixLike/RunToolFromSource to dump performance data by turning on cProfile in Python:
python -m cProfile -s time "dirname $0/../../Source/Python"/basename $0/basename $0.py $*

I found that ToolDefClassObject.LoadToolDefFile() was getting called 47 times and it looks like the issue is a new instance of ToolDefClassObject gets created every time a search is made for an external tool for a GUIDed encapsulation section. This seems to have the side effect of re-parsing the Conf/tools_def.txt and this is a slow operation.

Note: A workaround is to make the Conf/tools_def.txt only contain the toolchains you are actively using. This means you only have to parse ~150 lines vs. over 7,000 lines of text.

Most edk2.tianocore.org links in EDK II are wrong

We still support the http://edk2.tianocore.org url. It redirects to http://www.tianocore.org/edk2.

Possible bad data length check in EslSocketTransmit

The following check in EslSocketTransmit(), StdLib/EfiSocketLib/Socket.c looks a bit bogus to me:

     if (( NULL == pDataLength )
        && ( 0 > pDataLength )
        && ( NULL == pBuffer )) {
        if ( NULL == pDataLength ) {

I think it should be:

     if (( NULL == pDataLength )
        && ( 0 > *pDataLength )
        && ( NULL == pBuffer )) {
        if ( NULL == pDataLength ) {

This was flagged up as a potential error using static analysis:

[StdLib/EfiSocketLib/Socket.c:5369]: (warning) Logical conjunction always evaluates to false: pDataLength == 0 && pDataLength < 0.

StdLib's tmpfile and mkstemp do not work

i haven't been able to figure out exactly what is wrong, but tmpfile and mkstemp are broken and don't return a FILE*/fd (or a useful errno).

i have created /efi/stdlib/tmp as specified in the readme for tmpfile.

#include <string.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <errno.h>

int
main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
    FILE *fp = tmpfile();
    if(fp != NULL)
        printf("got file\n");
    else
        printf("did not get file: %s\n", strerror(errno));
    return 0;

Kernel 4.2.1, ovmf x64, -M i440fx on Intel Core i7 4790k.
When passing through a dedicated GPU (R9 280x) via vfio-pci, it still doesn't boot, but I don't get any error output from qemu.
Downgrading to the edk2.git-ovmf-x64-0-20150916.b1214.g2f667c5.noarch.rpm package from fedora fixes the issue.

RFE: please enable NVMe boot in OVMF

Hi, guys!

It would be nice to add NVMe boot support (to install windows on NVMe disk for example).

Our company developing SSD and we have simulator for SSD HW (to debug FW and run tests). But currently we need to gather logs from NVMe controller while windows is installing (yes, it's stupid, but it isn't my decision). Those logs will be used to create tests for SSD FW. I've modified QEMU's NVMe controller to create logs in a suitable format, but I can't install Windows on NVMe disk. That's why I ask you to add this feature, it may be useful for someone else too.
It may be useful for OS developers, who are trying to write it's own bootloader and wanna check it on virtual NVMe SSD.
I'm not familiar with OVMF, so I'll try to add NVMe support for SeaBios (I'm not bios developer, but I read SeaBios code for a week, so I more familiar with it).

QEMU cmdline:
qemu-system-x86_64
-drive file=ssd.raw,if=none,id=disk0,format=raw
-device nvme,drive=disk0,serial=1234

Performance optimize BaseTools Python code

It would be good to take a look at the hot functions of a build to see if the build performance can be optimized.

Missing break(s) in switch statement, EfiWrite()

Possible missing breaks in EfiWrite(), EmbeddedPkg/Library/EfiFileLib/EfiFileLib.c

switch (File->Type) {
case EfiOpenMemoryBuffer:
if ((File->CurrentPosition + *BufferSize) > File->MaxPosition) {
return EFI_END_OF_FILE;
}

CopyMem (File->Buffer + File->CurrentPosition, Buffer, *BufferSize);
File->CurrentPosition += *BufferSize;
Status = EFI_SUCCESS;

^^ I think there should be a break; statement here, otherwise successful code falls through and returns EFI_UNSUPPORTED Status.

case EfiOpenLoadFile:
// LoadFile device is read only be definition
Status = EFI_UNSUPPORTED;

^^ and a break here too I think, but less important and the fall through leaves the status unchanged

case EfiOpenFirmwareVolume:
if (File->FvSectionType != EFI_SECTION_ALL) {
// Writes not support to a specific section. You have to update entire file
return EFI_UNSUPPORTED;
}

IDE Cdrom devices not present when using latest Ovmf

In current Ovmf code, when using firmware with -cdrom or -drive options using qemu with KVM to present a disc image with an IDE cdrom device, the device never appears in the firmware. In previous Ovmf builds, this would appear in the firmware list as a DVD/CD device, with available access to guest (especially during installation). This presents a problem, for example, when requiring virtio drivers when installing Windows guest.

Here's what I'm getting when running make -C edk2/BaseTools:

Python 3 is also installed (I need it for other things). python executable points to /usr/bin/python3. I tried setting alias python='/usr/bin/python2'. If python3 is the problem - is there a way to pass a path to python2 to make?

Win32 Directory is missing for BaseTools Bin for the nt32 switch

Hi,

The github edk2 repository is missing the BaseTools/Bin/Win32 directory. This directory exists int he svn repository and need to be ported over to github in order for edksetup.bat to work with the nt32 swtich.

A edksetup.bat call with the nt32 switch is called, the nt32 switch is fowarded to BaseTools/toolsetup.bat script. Within toolsetup.bat, the script check for the existence of %EDK_TOOLS_PATH%\Bin\Win32 (BaseTools/Bin/Win32) to set the EDK_TOOLS_BIN. Since the BaseTools/Bin/Win32 directory is not present in the github repository the setup script fails. Copying over the Win32 directory from the svn repository fixes this issue.

Thanks,
Paul

no pcie hotplug support for q35/ovmf

Seems that pci hotplug on pcie ports of q35 is not possible in ovmf.
I am not sure if this is related, but linux does not detect any mmcfg tables.
In addition pciehp driver on linux does not report any slots.

OVMF 64MMIO / "above 4G decoding" for Tesla pass through

Hi,

what is the state when I'd try to "PCI - pass-trough" a powerful graphic card (like the nvidia tesla K80)
to qemu with OVMF as UEFI/BIOS?

On a physical machine I may have to enable 64-bit MMIO (or like it's often called "above 4G decoding"), how is that with OVMF, as far as I have seen there is no such option in OVMF also I'm currently not sure what the state in qemu itself is I only found an old mailing post [1] regarding this issue and posted a week ago on there user/discuss list but received sadly no response yet.

So I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
If this is the wrong place to ask I'm glad to move the question to an more appropriate one, but I did not found any mailing/discuss list for OVMF.

can't build UDK2015 branch

Hello. I can't build UDK2015 branch (r19548).
After cherry-pick 18698, 18699, 18700, 18701, 18702, 18703, 18706, 19146 from trunk build successfully.

Compilation Errors with Xcode 7/clang on OS X 10.11

When compiling with EDK2 using Xcode as the toolchain, errors occur. Removing -ftrap-function=undefined_behavior_has_been_optimized_away_by_clang in Conf/build_rules.txt seems to fix the issue, and compilation is successful. The build_tools.template might need to be updated for Xcode 7.
