spectral's Issues

U+02BE/U+02BF flipped

It seems that the half-rings are flipped in comparison to other typefaces (also, they are a little small, and perhaps too widely spaced).

Capital Sharp S

ẞ or SS is an orthographic/mapping choice. It shouldn’t be decided/forced on the glyph level.
Just as the W unicode is for the character W and you wouldn’t put V+V in there and force people to use that.
Just as the Æ is for the character Æ and you wouldn’t put A+E in there and force people to use that.
And so on …

Line-height in iOS (otf or ttf) is being applied from the bottom, rather than from the center

The default line-height is 150%, and we can’t change that line-height without it getting messed up. FWIW I had the same problem on web until I found a newer version of the web font (woff2). Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’s a newer otf or ttf with the fix. I have attempted using fonts downloaded from both productiontype.com as well as from Google.

To illustrate what is happening, here is a screenshot, with the following React Native styles applied to it:

  font-size: 32px;
  line-height: 32px;
  border-width: 1px;

image

You can see that the line-height doesn’t get applied from the center, but rather from the bottom for some weird reason.

Here’s that same exact styling, but with a different serif font from Google (Merriweather):

Improving Vietnamese

These suggestions apply for Spectral SC as well:

  • Hookabove could be improved. Right now its lower stem is too thin.
  • The horn in uhorn/Uhorn could be improved. It’s extending too much to the right.

I'm willing to help contribute the changes directly, by sending you a 'vietnamese only' glyphapp file for you to review and integrate.

Or, you can make changes and then push your work to master and I will give further feedback :)

Most of the modifier letters should be respaced

Spotted after looking at #13.

Most of the modifier letters in Spectral should be respaced: 02BE, 02BF, 02C6, 02C7, 02C8, 02C9, 02CA, 02CB, 02CC, 02D8, 02D9, 02DA, 02DD.

They are meant to be used among letters and should be spaced as letters or apostrophe/quotes.

02BB, 02BC are fine.

Italics and bold not showing

I'm using Spectral to typeset text in Lilypond music notation program. When used as a text typeface, Spectral displayed properly in the past. Given the recent update to 2.0, italics and bold are no longer showing (they appear to be hidden/not showing) when used with Lilypond. This happens both with Google and Github .ttf versions; the Github .otf version typesets regular font as bold. However, the older version 1.0 (still available for download at Font Squirrel) is causing the italics to display (show) properly. This is the first time that I encountered this inconsistency, so I'm not sure how to go around it.

My apology if this comment may not be appropriate for this list. Would you be able to point me in the right direction? I don't mind simply using the older version in my work, but would nevertheless welcome the opportunity to understand for what reasons the new version is no longer fully compatible.

Small caps not working?

Hello,

Thank you for this beautiful typeface.

I'm having difficulties to render some text with small caps, using the following CSS:

.spectral {
font-family: "Spectral", georgia, serif;
font-kerning: normal;
font-feature-settings: "kern", "liga", "clig", "calt", "onum", "smcp";
}

and this link in the header:

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Spectral:400,400i" rel="stylesheet">

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you!

TrueType curve quality

I noticed the TrueType conversion made the curves more bumpy than they need to be. If you compare the PS outlines from the UFOs with the TTFs, you can see a lot of differences.

This is not visible at normal text sizes, but as TTF is the only distribution format for the desktop fonts, I thought it may be worth noting.

Types without the ligature

hello,
i'd like some advise in how to use this font on a headline but without the ligature between the letters "f" and "l". The word is Influence, and i'd like to use the f and l together, with no ligatures on it.

Ligatures with long s

Spectral currently has a glyph for long S (ſ) however, it does not have corresponding ligatures. You would expect ſi, ſl, ſt to form ligatures similar to fi, fl, ft (well, maybe not ſt in Spectral.) See the attached image from current version available in Google Docs on Chrome OS.

Complete language support for all 96%+ languages

I'd like to request just a few languages which have over 90% character support and are just missing a few characters, according to CLDR :)

U+0301 combining acute accent is not placed correctly on Cyrillic vowels

In Cyrillic languages such as Russian, it is not unusual to put accents on vowels to disambiguate some words (for instance чудно́е and чу́дное) and in a few other cases.

It appears that the rendering of Cyrillic accented letters is not done properly when using Spectral. The problem can be seen, for instance, by comparing Spectral with other fonts on Google Fonts. On the screenshot below, some fonts, such as Cormorant, Old Standard TT and Alice, are doing it correctly. Others, such as Spectral and Literata, are putting the accent too much to the right. Others, such as Playfair Display SC, are completely messing up both the position of the accent and the spacing.

Is it possible to adjust the position of the accent on the combination of U+0301 with Cyrillic characters а́, е́, и́, о́, у́, ы́, э́, ю́, and я́?

Old Style 0 Glyph Has Too Little Contrast

It can't be just me: The old style 0 glyph in each of the weights looks way too thin compared to the other numerals. This happens on all the software I've tested and regardless of whether tabular or proportional numerals are selected.
Here are some screenshots from LibreOffice (bold weight) writer and MS Word (Spectral with lining figures on top, Spectral with old style figures in the center and Source Serif 4 with old style figures at the bottom):
Libreoffice
MS Word
The strokes at the right and left arches of the 0 counter should be much thicker and look more like the o glyph:
0o
I love Spectral, but this makes OSN practically useless.
