Wait. I tried it with different files, and it errored the same at first, but showed the comparison window. And now the first pair of files works as well. No more errors. Weird.

For now the program looks for the .ttf-font in the directory you are actually launching the program from. Perhaps you launched the program from outside folder you extracted the .zip-archive in?
I'm going to change it at some point so that the font can be loaded correctly even when you are launching the executable from outside the extracted archive folder (which is likely something many people would want to do).

Yes, I've been running it with a full path, with current directory = location of video files instead.
