Integrate with official Pancake (so that English updates come out here automatically) about translations HOT 24 CLOSED

I'm talking about integrating our launch process with this repository so that when we release updates, the English language files are updated here too.

We have not yet made any decision regarding adding all the languages from this repository into the Pancake Core, but we're looking into it!

The problem with adding the languages directly into the Pancake Core is that they could go out of date and we'd have no way of fixing it. What we might do instead is have a link to this repository (if you're OK with that, @therephil) so that people can download the languages, with full knowledge that it's unofficial.

Sort of a "Get third-party languages" link of some sort. Thoughts?

Another option would be to make a plugin that automatically downloads languages and keeps them up to date with this repository. That way, you'd have access to all languages, all the time, but they'd still be kept out of the Pancake core. Just something to consider.

I think it should be as easy as possible for the user to get another language. And at the same time you guys should be able to make modifications to the core as you please without having to worry what external repos might do. (I think I could transfer ownership of this repo to you so it does not depend on me and be more associated with pancake)

I think I would like a language section in the settings where I can choose to a activate a language present in my system or alternatively download it from an external source. Maybe a way to specify that source.
Maybe that would be best solved with a plugin. People would still have to find it and manage languages in two spots tho.

What is the easiest/best solution from you pancake bakers point of view?

If you'd be willing to transfer ownership, that'd be great, as we could then easily integrate it with Pancake without opening any security issues (integrating remote code from a repo we don't control is not possible; at best we could link to the repository and disclaim responsibility).

If we could do that, then the language dropdown menu would let you pick from languages installed in Pancake OR languages straight from this repo. If you selected a language from this repo, it'd download it onto your Pancake and automatically keep it up to date as part of the update system. That'd be the best integration possible, I think. We could all commit updates to languages here in this repo, and they'd instantly be pushed to everyone.

We'd also add a credits section and a link to this repo, which I think is important to highlight the effort everyone's been putting into this repo, and to hopefully get more people to see this repo and help. 😀

Jep, I think that would be the most elegant solution. People could easily choose their language, it would be updated and everything is good.
You could add an item like "your language is not available? help translate pancake" with a link to the translations repo in the dropdown to get people to see there is the option to do that.

Who should I transfer ownership to then? You? pancakeapp?

on a sidenote: Is there something like the forum/diner/discuss coming again? I feel the community has no real way of being a community at the moment.

Sorry for taking so darn long to get back to you on this. I think @pancakeapp might be the best choice. When you do that, I believe GitHub gives you the option to leave a redirect link so that people trying to access the repo here can still get to the @pancakeapp repo. Would you be willing to do that? That'd help quite a bit, because you and I have both left a bunch of links on the Internet to this URL, and I'd hate for it to break.

The community is indeed coming back, we're just trying to figure out the best way to do it in a manner that doesn't cause people to treat them as a support system, because that used to lead to lots of threads slipping through the cracks and we weren't being able to handle everything as well as we'd like.

It was just the link expiring all the time. It's all good now, and we should be able to integrate this repo with Pancake now without any problems.
