I’ve encountered a lot of these improperly merged nodes too. Thanks for diagnosing the issue. I think iD should simply avoid modifying the existing node’s crossing
tag. This will result in some inconsistency between the way and node, but that would’ve been an issue anyways had the user manually connected the way to the node in the first place.
A validator rule could detect inconsistencies between the way and node, regardless of how the node was created. (Rapid has implemented this validator rule.)
