brief's Introduction

Hi, I'm Maykel ๐Ÿ‘‹

I am a digital product builder who focuses on the intersection of design, engineering and business strategy.

Previously, I led the digital product and design team at Glossier, worked on a myriad of efforts and product teams at Facebook, and was one of the first designers on the Instagram team.

When not building things, I like to spend time helping others with their careers and their teams, and advising their businesses.

Work History ๐Ÿงพ

Here is a brief history of what I have been up to professionally in the last decade and a half.

Now: On Hiatus

Taking a break to do some consulting, advising, investing, and playing with some new ideas. If youโ€™d like to chat, please reach out!

2018 โ€“ 2019: Glossier

As Head of Digital Product and Design at Glossier, I helped transform the digital product management and design team, by hiring some amazing people to the product and design team, focusing the team on driving measurable results, and creating a brand new design system.

2014 โ€“ 2018: Facebook

At Facebook I worked at the intersection of design and product strategy, leading a re-design of the search engine, supporting multiple efforts on the local team (including a prototype of hyperlocal with bluetooth beacons), and leading the product experimentation team.

2011 โ€“ 2014: Instagram

As one of the earliest members of the Instagram team, I worked as a designer (and sometimes engineer) โ€” most notably on: redesigning instagram.com (including our move to React), and re-designing for iOS7.

2006 โ€“ 2011: Airglow Studios

As design co-founder, I led all of the design and creative efforts, as well as general company strategy โ€” shifting us through our transformation from a web studio to focus on apps and games across web and mobile.

brief's Issues

Unwanted automatic down scrolling on new message (+ FIX)

In my Skype client (Mac Skype 6.1.60) the chat view scrolls down on each new message (quite irritating). Where in the default theme the view only scrolls down if you're near the bottom.

The cause of this is in the main.css:

html, body {
height: 100%;
}

With "height: 100%;" the document.body.offsetHeight always returns the height of the window and thus the method _nearBottom() always returns true. This "height: 100%;" isn't in the default theme.

Changing the CSS to this fixes the automatic scrolling behavior:

html, body {
/*height: 100%; */
}

Incompatible chat style.

Hi there, I'm using Skype Version 6.3.0.582 and I'm getting an incompatibility message when I try to install. Anyone had this problem too?

No emoticons?

Somehow I don't get animated emoticons displayed after installing the theme, I get the code instead : (sweat)๏ฟฝ

Performance degradation on large chats

We use group chats extensively, and after a while with Brief, they start to slow down. I'm assuming this is due to the size of the chat, and trying to track everything in the "dom"

Skype 6.4

Hey,

There are bad and good news.

Bad: Brief doesn't work in Skype 6.4 because they deleted this function :(
Good: compact style chat option and better history chat functionality.

Invalid chat style

Having used this style for quite some time previously it now refuses to work on a clean Lion install. Message given is "Invalid chat style: some template files are missing" and appears regardless of whether I install it by double-clicking the style file or copy it into the Application Support folder manually. Also the version which worked on Snow Leopard before does not work either.

Invalid chat style: some template files are missing

Skype shows name of contact without floating

Skype version: 5.3.0.xx

The name of the contact is on the right side of the contact image, the text then is on the right side of the name instead of below of the contact name. This makes Skype looking even worse than the default style.

Skype 6.5

Did this just remove the ability for themes?? This looks so %#%* ugly now, god DAMNIT
