May be are you override icon-font-path variable?

thank you @maxd not that I am aware of, I just installed the gem as usual. And to make sure, I even forced the update to the new gem, since I was using version 3, now 3.1.1. The problem persists

May be are you using old cached version of application.css? Your path contains fonts part which has been removed.
Try to use these steps to remove cached files.

Yes it was the cache problem!
I run rake tmp:clear
as suggested and it solved the issue
