notejot's Issues

Graphical issues

Hey! I seem to get weird graphical defects, such as a black line at the top window border and the stretched color bubbles.

captura de pantalla de 2018-04-09 19-58-03

I'm running GNOME version 3.28.0 on Antergos and using an external display.

Re-sizable window

Feature request: (Enhancement??)

Thank you for this awesome app. It would be helpful if I could re-size the window to suite my notes.

Ability to open notes disappeared

Not sure if I'm loosing my mind or not but I could have sworn there was an ability to open and save notes until recently. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that was pretty essential stuff.

Invalid AppData file

AppCenter Dashboard ran appstreamcli validate on your project's .appdata.xml file and
received the following errors:

I - com.github.lainsce.notejot.appdata.xml:com.github.lainsce.notejot.desktop:9
First 'description/p' paragraph might be too short.

W - com.github.lainsce.notejot.appdata.xml:com.github.lainsce.notejot.desktop:15

No selection highlights in title

When editing the title there is no indication of what's selected. Usually the selected characters get a inversed color and background color.

Example 1:

  1. Create new note
  2. Click in title (a bottom border appears)
  3. Press ctrl + A

Expected: A dark background behind text
What happens: No visual change, no selection indication

Example 2:

  1. Create new note
  2. Click in title (a bottom border appears)
  3. Press right key (a cursor appears)
  4. Press Shift + left key

Expected: A dark background behind part of the text
What happens: No visual change, no selection indication

Show title of notes in dock

Expected behavior:
Multiple notes are open and were given different titles.
Right clicking on the Notejot icon in the dock shows the different titles.
We can thus quickly select a note.

Actual behavior:
A right click on the icon shows the Reversed Domain Name Notation as many times as there are notes.
We don't know which note to select (and it looks somewhat unpolished).

Tested on version 1.3.0

Affects: 1.1.8 release

Opening Notejot while it is already running duplicates notes

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to Applications, open Notejot and create 3 notes. Write some text in at least one of them.
  2. Without closing Notejot, go to Applications and open Notejot again. You will now have 6 notes (with 2 having text in them).
  3. Open Notejot again with the same method. You now have 12 notes.

If you close every note after doing this and then run Notejot again, the 12 notes come back up.

This is on version 1.2.8.

Note saving is unreliable

Steps to reproduce (clear all previous notes before testing):

  1. Open Notejot. Write "1" in the first note.
  2. Create 3 more notes, writing "2", "3" and "4" in each new one (so the number corresponds to the order of creation).
  3. Using the close button in the header bar, close the notes in this order: note 4, then 3, then 2, then 1.
  4. Open Notejot again. Note 4 has lost it's contents and is in a different position.

If you repeat the above but close it in the order of 1, 2, 3, 4, notes 1 and 2 lose their contents and position but 3 and 4 are fine. Similar pattern with 2, 4, 1, 3: notes 2 and 4 are reset.

If you use the order 1, 4, 3, 2, all notes retain their contents and position.

This is when you press the close button on the header bar. If you instead close by right clicking via the header bar and selecting Close and use the order 4, 3, 2, 1, only note 1 keeps it's contents, the others have lost their contents and position.

The Ctrl + Q shortcut isn't affected by this (i.e. you don't lose any notes). Right clicking Notejot on the dock and clicking "Close all" is not affected either.

This is using 1.2.8.

Data Loss when working with multiple notes

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open two notes and write something.
  2. If you close both of them and open from the slingshot again. No data is lost
  3. If one of them is closed and opened from slingshot. A blank note with no window controls is created.
  4. On closing both the notes and opening again. Data which was in the note closed in step 3 is lost however title is preserved. (This happened every time I tried earlier however while making the video didn't occur on the first try.)
  5. On repeating step three and four on the other note, its data is lost too.

Note: On clicking the header bar in the note with no window controls both notes are closed.

[Request] Visual change

Hello Lains,

Your app is awesome. Congratulations!
I have a design suggestion for you. Have you seen Nimbus (https://github.com/danrabbit/nimbus)? I think notejot would look nicer if the notes had that kind of look-and-feel.

I thought in something like that:

Somehow no colors...

I can correctly switch colors, but the gui doesn't show any, all gray.

Save state

I expected Notejot to save my note when I closed it, and was surprised to see my note gone when I re-opened the app later. Saving the contents of the window would be super useful. :)

Confusing workflow

Maybe is my stupidity but...
How can I add more notes instead of only one.

I created a note, then a open another one, the second was created with the content of the first one. I deleted the second one's content and closed the first one, then I opened notejot again and there was no content.

Invalid Desktop file

AppCenter Dashboard ran desktop-file-validate on your project's .desktop file and received the following errors:

repository/data/com.github.lainsce.notejot.desktop: error: file contains key "_Name" in group "Desktop Action AboutDialog", but key names must contain only the characters A-Za-z0-9- (they may have a "[LOCALE]" postfix)
repository/data/com.github.lainsce.notejot.desktop: error: action group "Desktop Action AboutDialog" exists, but there is no matching action "AboutDialog"

Formatting issue when closing and opening

I am using version 1.2.8 of this application and whenever I write notes and use the return key to give it a new line and some space in between sections of different ideas, close the app and reopen it, the text gets thrown to the first line. All line spacing i have put in has been removed and consolidated all the text to one line. I do not know if this is only me or is anyone else has experienced this and if there is something I can do to fix it.

Checkboxes

Could it support checkboxes or checklists like Google Keep

Make resizeable

First of all thanks for notejot, it looks wonderful.
I would like to suggest some features and this is the first one.

Can notes be resizeable?

Still having data loss issue (tested with master)

Still having data loss issue on master (Tested after a reboot).

See Video --> Happens after two tries to reproduce the bug

Not in every time but it happens as:

  1. Create 2 notes
  2. Close 1 note .
  3. Click on the icon from slingshot .
  4. Close other note.
  5. Open notejot again from slingshot. The first note will be empty but title and color is remembered.

Thanks!

Rich text

Can it support rich text? is that against the very concept of simple?

GtkHeaderBar box-shadow

I suggest that you add the box-shadow property to the header's CSS. It will remove the annoying 1px white line between the header and the body.

I've tried box-shadow: none; and box-shadow: inset 0px 1px 2px -2px white; in some of my apps. The second one looks better tho 😉.

contents 2 of my 3 notes disappeard

Hi,
Thanks for this app, very useful
I am using latest version of this app for my everyday use.
After last reboot 2 of 3 notes got deleted. It only shows window and not the content.
I don't know how can I provide more information, please let me know how can I.
Thanks!

Basic Markdown Support

I love this app! It's easily one of my favorite apps on Elementary AppCenter. There's just one feature that I miss, and that is the possibility to add some basic markdown to my notes: bold, italics, lists and things of sort.

I know that maybe this will be a lot of effort to implement, because you'll probably have to implement view modes (edit or preview) in the notes view, and then the renderer.

So, just leaving this feature request here if you would like to implement it. If not, still a great app!

Suggestion for improvement of icon choice and layout

I have two suggestions about the icons in the top bar of each note:

  1. The gear icon currently has only one function, changing the note's color. This, however, is not evident from the gear symbol. I would suggest changing it into a brush symbol for example.

  2. To me it feels like the three icons should be grouped together and placed at the top right in the following order: New note (plus icon) - change color (brush icon) - delete note (trash can icon). In that way, the order of the icons would represent the lifecycle of a note: creating it, coloring it and deleting it if not needed anymore. It feels like they belong together (I would understand if you opted for leaving the 'new note' icon on the left, in that case, however, I would still swap the positions of the two icons on the right side).

Those are just two improvements that came to my mind while using your app. I hope you agree and we will see those changes in the next version :)
Cheers!

Click note title to rename

It would be nice to be able to give a note a name by clicking the title to edit ("Notejot" by default)

Photos has a decent widget here for going between a label and an entry:

Invalid Desktop file

A new note is always created on startup

Whenever I open notejot from the applications menu, a new empty note is always created.

To me this behavior is kind of annoying since when I'm opening Notejot I usually just want to see my existing notes and if I wanted to make a new one I would do so from the menu

Updating to 1.2.8 ate my previous notes!

Hi,
I've just updated to version 1.2.8, and now my previous notes are gone! Has the file been overwritten? If I was able to find my notes in my backup files, would they be compatible to the new version?

Otherwise, great app!
