VR Wheelchair

VRWC Logo

VR Wheelchair is a wheelchair locomotion rig for virtual reality applications built in Unity. The rig is layered closely on top of Unity's XR Interaction Toolkit to provide cross-platform compatibility. The package contains a complete player controller rig (based on Unity's "Room-Scale XR Rig (Action-based)") which can be easily imported as a prefab into an existing Unity project.

Rig

VR Wheelchair is motivated to iterate on one of VR's looming design problems - locomotion - as well as to utilize VR's immersiveness to build empathy for other forms of embodiment.

You can read more about the project's key motivations, as well as my development process, in the project devlog.

Features

Current

  • Physics-based controller rig.
  • Unique 3D wheelchair model.

Furture

  • Haptic and audio feedback systems.
  • Dynamic braking using value-based input vs. binary input.
  • Rig/model scalability to allow a custom fit for variable body sizes.

Release

VR Wheelchair is still in prototype, but I'm projecting a version 1.0 release on the Unity Asset Store early summer 2021.

Demo

You can demo a prototype version of the VR Wheelchair rig on your Oculus Quest: Download APK

Install to your Quest using SideQuest or Android's adb.

vr-wheelchair's Issues

Unable to use wheels

Hi,
Your project is fantastic, but I had some issues with using it.
I tried using your project in Unity 2022.3.1f1 with the Prototype scene and the XR Device Simulator. When I try to grab the wheels I receive this message in the console:

Can't add component 'Rigidbody' to WheelL's grabPoint because such a component is already added to the game object!
UnityEngine.GameObject:.ctor (string,System.Type[])
VRWC_WheelInteractable:SpawnGrabPoint (UnityEngine.XR.Interaction.Toolkit.XRBaseInteractor) (at Assets/Scripts/VRWC_WheelInteractable.cs:70)
VRWC_WheelInteractable/d__11:MoveNext () (at Assets/Scripts/VRWC_WheelInteractable.cs:92)
UnityEngine.SetupCoroutine:InvokeMoveNext (System.Collections.IEnumerator,intptr)

And if I build the application for using it into Meta Quest Pro, I find myself away from the wheelchair and unable to use the wheels. I had the same issues when I opened the project in the 2020.3.1f1 editor which is the suggested one.
Can you tell me what to do? Thank you.
