appcenter's Issues

Nvidia drivers and wine would not install together due to connflicting dependencies

Whenever I try to install Wine from the Store or the stable realize of the wine, it asks to remove my nvidia driver. Alternativily , I installed the 1.9.6 via ppa, but rhen the wine wont show up in the menu. Also, on running wine.cfg in terminal, I found that no directory or files were created of the wine. If you could just make the conflicting file as optional dependencies, then It would be really helpful.
Please fix this bug and if possible then keep me in the loop.
Thanks in advance. Please reply soon if possible.

Software Center does not trigger update mechanism

As usual in a daily build there are a lot of updates frequently. Whyle command line tools like
apt-get upgrade and apt upgrade as well as the full-upgrade option run perfectly the gui component of elementarys software center does nothing after entering the first users password after hitting the update button.

Clicking update notification does not open AppCenter [$25 awarded]

A feature request for Loki (I am currently running Loki beta).

I saw a popup saying there were updates to be installed, but when I click on it, nothing happened, so to install updates I used apt-get. Clicking on the popup intuitively feels like it should either install the updates, or give me a window asking to confirm to install the updates... Or maybe open the App Centre... (or anything really).

I wonder if https://bugs.launchpad.net/gala/+bug/1430848 is related but I doubt it.

It would be nice to expose it to the user.

app center wont update applications

app center wont update applications. after authentication update button just returns to "unpressed" state and no progress or download is visible - I waited a while and also no actual App was updatet or even downloaded so Im certain, that there was probably not even a successful connection.

Also App center should ask for permission to even search for updates, since apparently it locks certain ressources like access to var file system and therefore I cant apt-get update for example.

Inform about refunds

maybe it would motivate people to pay if they know they can get a refund in the first X days after buying an app (like 7 or 14 days).

but you can also pay later and just download it for $0.

problem with refunds is that the processing fees are already payed and maybe developers already got the money. so probably not viable.

what do you think?

Implement Snapd

Informational.

If we're going to implement Snappy support we'll want to use: https://launchpad.net/snapd-glib

According to Robert:

  • Implements all of the snapd REST API: https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/blob/master/docs/rest.md
  • Provides both synchronous and asynchronous methods
  • Supports Vala
  • Will SRU to Ubuntu 14.04 once the API/ABI is stable.
  • Uploaded to Ubuntu Yakkety, will be there once it is accepted into the NEW queue. Use the libsnapd-glib-dev or gir1.2-snapd-0 packages.

appcenter does not honor packages marked with apt-mark hold

Due to a bug in updates of some network manager packages, I manually installed the older versions, and 'pinned' them with the following command:

sudo apt-mark hold libnm0 libnm-glib4 libnm-glib-vpn1 libnm-util2 network-manager

apt upgrade now shows the following output:

$ sudo apt upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  libnm-glib-vpn1 libnm-glib4 libnm-util2 libnm0 network-manager
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.

however, appcenter showed that there were updates, and after installing them the held packages were upgraded again to the latest version.

Show addons as updates to apps when the project group and developer is the same

I think we can use/abuse the addons system to make addon updates better. For example if we have an update to a plug, it would make sense to show that as an update to system settings instead of as an update to "Operating system updates". So, when both the developer and the project group are the same as an addon's parent, we should associate it as an update to that parent.

My reasoning here is that when the developer or project group is not the same, I think we want to show those updates separately. For example, if you get an update to AdBlock, we wouldn't want to show that as a Midori update I don't think. The same goes for things like Synapse indicator for Wingpanel. We want to be able to keep 3rd party addons separate.

Since we have the "developer" and "project group" fields available, we have the information to know if an addon is developed by the 1st party (like an update to the network plug for example) or a 3rd party (an update to tweaks). Checking both fields gives the 1st party an ability to distribute non-default addons and have them counted independently. So let's say elementary wanted to distribute a non-default wingpanel indicator we could do that by changing the project group to something else.

As previously discussed in Slack, we need to communicate with the Houston API to find out which apps are monetized, accept payments, and then pass that data to Houston to be converted into charges (may not be an accurate representation of how this system works in practice).

Old apps need to be updated before they can be uninstalled [$25 awarded]

In AppCenter, when wanting to uninstall an app that is not of the latest version, no option to uninstall is presented until after the app is up to date. This means that to remove an app, you're basically first required to download the app. It would be good to have a way to uninstall without updating first, especially for larger apps.

Automatic Security Updates

We should ensure that automatic security updates are enabled out of the box in elementary OS. Security vulnerabilities are found, fixed, and released upstream frequently enough that we really should just deliver these automatically.

One concern that has been raised is bandwidth caps; I agree that not all updates should necessarily be automatic (especially on metered connections), but the counterargument for pushing automatic security updates is that if the user's system is online at all, it's not safe unless they have the latest security updates.

unattended-upgrade might be one route (see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticSecurityUpdates) but I believe Cody said he was investigating an apt config instead.

Optional “Remind me in ___ days” for $0 downloads

When downloading an app for $0 it would be great to have an option to set "Remind me in ___ days".

If a person uses this it could be configured to send an email reminder or show a desktop notification.

In this way a person can trial an app to make sure it's stable and will fit their needs before paying.

It would also give people the flexibility to support apps when they are able to, e.g. after pay day.

AppCenter is empty if apt update has never been run [$30 awarded]

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Do a fresh install without connecting to the Internet
  2. Fresh boot and connection to the internet
  3. Open AppCenter

Expectation:
AppCenter fires up packagekitd and updates the software catalog transparently in the background when the session starts up

Reality:
AppCenter only shows data for the pre-installed packages. packagekitd never fixes it. AppCenter is useless until you open a Terminal and manually run apt update

Update log

I don't know if it is a bug or just a missing feature, but I can't seem to find a log of all the updates, installs or removals that AppCenter has done.

The reason I am curious is that I just clicked Update and did a restart. Afterwards my Thunderbolt 3 ports stopped working (they still charge). I know the Thunderbolt 3 ports still work, because they still work in the Live Boot with ElementaryOS.

Now if there is a way to see what the appcenter did, I would be able to see if it removed any packages that could relate to the Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Grid view in AppCenter

I think that list view is not very convenient, because it is involves a lot of scrolling. By adding Grid view option in every category, AppCenter will have more compact look which make the search for new apps much easier and much more apps will be visible to the user at once, so more new apps will be discovered.
The grid will be resizable (In the sense of number of tiles per row) so every user will find the most convenient option for him.
Every tile in the grid will have the following information:
Icon
Name
Short summery about the app
Install\Uninstall option

The tile will behave as list item. Click will open the app dialog (Same as before), click on install or uninstall will bring authentication popup, after authentication, a progress bar will appear under the summery of the app and a description of the current step will be next to it.
The install\uninstall button will change to Cancel (Same as before).
