An easy to use 8085 simulator for a first pass study on microprocessors. The code should simulate the good old 8085 at a functional level.

Project task list

Overview

This project is deemed to be a functional simulator of an 8085 microprocessor and also integrate a timing diagram, a UI to give a bird's eye view of all the activities going on at the architecture level.

Tasks

  • Parser to parse assembly code
  • An assembler that converts mnemonics to instructions in binary
  • Dump hex file associated with the assembly program
  • 8085 core that executes the instructions
  • Execution trace file
  • Timing diagram viewer
  • GUI to view architecture activities

Need ideas: Python and GUI

It would be great if we could include the following features while the back-end is taking shape

  1. A timing diagram viewer
  2. A way to visualize updates made to various areas of the 8085 processor. For example, if one of the registers get updated, the block can be highlighted to show the update

We need a nice GUI. Since the code is written in Python, what's the best way to come up with a GUI?

Machine cycle abstraction

If the CPU is written in a procedural way, how do we embed instruction decoding cycles for generating the timing diagram?
