Android Messages as a Cross-platform Desktop App

The app doesn't respect the alert style
eg. If I select 'Alerts' instead of 'Banners' the notification still clears itself without user interaction.
thanks
I noticed that the application completely closes after hitting close. I think it would be productive to have the app, on Windows, to minimize down to the system tray icons. Also, on Mac to have the app just stay in the app tray until force closing.
Just downloaded and installed this program, and when I get a new text I don't receive a notification. Doesn't matter whether the window is minimized or maximized. I have notifications turned on in the app settings as well as in Windows settings. I'm not running Skype or any other VOIP, and the program shortcut is still in my Start Menu. I'm running Windows Home 1803, OS build 17134.137.
Minimize and close to tray would be nice features.
Notifications need improved a tad; here are some suggestions:
The Check for Updates menu item doesn't seem to do anything.
I'm using Windows 10.
I do have 2 working devices for my 2 separate carriers. I don't like dual sim configuration because it ruins my current Android Auto setup (Phone Dialer issue). My current setup is to use Android Messages Desktop for my main device while Pushbullet for my secondary device. I hope you can add an "Add Device" on the settings menu or Just add a NEW TAB button on the upper left just like on the Microsoft Edge/Google Chrome/Mozilla Firefox Browser. I hope you can add this feature in the future. Thanks!
Ability to change theme of application (including a dark mode/theme)
Many Windows apps allow you to auto-hide the toolbar, only appearing when the alt key is pressed. I'd love an option to enable this for Android Messages.
The icon appears twice in the mac notification box.
Just installed the application, was looking in the menu, saw the toggle and clicked it. Now I can't figure out how to turn it back on. Not sure if this is a true issue or just something I can't figure out.
cmd-H doesn't work to hide app on Mac
I would love to use this on a Chromebook either through a CHROME OS app or through linux on a Chromebook.
In the standard web version of Android Messages for web, I can save pictures that I receive / send by right clicking, then selecting "save image as." Also, when using the web version, I can click on web links that I receive / send and my browser will automatically navigate to the site.
Neither of these options appear to be available on the Mac version of the Messages Desktop App.
Aside from minor issues, the desktop app works very well. Thanks for your work on this!
Currently, on receipt of a new message, a popup window displays as a notification, but dismisses itself. The Notification will not remain in the action center for review after the notification alert decays.
Is it possible to get the notifications to remain in the action center to show that you still have a new message to review, and then dismiss by either tabbing into the main window of the application, or clearing the notifications manually?
under gnome when when a message comes in it pops up as a notification as expected. Clicking on the notification does not open the app as I would expect it to. Not sure if this is a bug or feature request.
After a while the mac app loses connection with the phone and doesn't update.
I like the work you are doing with this. But, when I just use a chrome shortcut, I get a an unread badge over the icon in my system tray if I have an unread message. Is there a way for you to do that? That's a deal breaker for me.
I see you closed the adding of the unread badge issue, so I'll start a new issue here.
Windows 10. If I get a new message, the windows badge correctly appears. If I read the message on my phone, the unread badge does not go away on the desktop. If I do the same thing with the basic shortcut, the unread badge does go away. If I open your android messages app on the desktop, it does show that the message is read and then the badge goes away, so that is making it to you that it's ready, you just aren't removing the badge when it's read on the phone.
Do you have the ability to remove the unread badge from the desktop icon if the message is read on the phone?
On Windows 10, everything else I have in my system tray activates/opens upon a single click except your android messages app.
Could you update it to open with a single click instead of a double click?
It would be nice to have a few guidelines to follow for contributing to create consistency :)
Hey man! Thanks for making this into an electron app! This is a complete life saver when toggling between apps on MacOS rather than just having a Chrome tab open.
I was playing around and realized that hyperlinks won't open through the app. Not a big deal, but maybe something to check out whenever you get access?
Anyway, thanks again! This is awesome!
If you press the red X button on the window you cannot open the app again from dock without force closing and reopening.
It appears that the built-in spellcheck on the Mac version is disabled.
The default keyboard shortcuts are strange. Is there a way to customize them or make them match the vim-like bindings of Gmail?
Hello.
I have Windows 10 build 17134.112, but I am not getting any notifications from the app. After looking through some screenshots, are they only coming from Windows 10 notification center? Because I have that disabled.
When I view messages in browser, I do get notification box on the bottom right corner.
Is it possible to have notification coming directly from the app? And also have like a small number counter, of how many unread messages, displayed right in the messages icon, like it's displayed on screenshot from MacOS.
How about an option to have this start with windows? I don't see this anywhere. I can manually move it to my start up folder, but I think it would be pretty easy for you to add a startup on boot option.
And if not, can it get one?
I used Coherence Pro to create a stand alone app for Android Messages on my Mac, but it doesn't give me a good unread count.
Hi,
Sorry my lack of knowledge in coding, but running the *exe through virustotal results in:
I would REALLY want to try this out (especially since the Google Apps version notifications don't look to work for me and the features you are implementing look great!) but I'm not really assured that signing in to my main account through your app would be completely safe? I think in another instance Electron does a false-positive (again, not completely versed in coding).
Either way, thank you for your hard work!
I hope you can include this feature in your future releases.
I pulled the latest AppImage (0.5) and placed it in /opt/android-messages changed the permissions and attempted to launch the application.
The prompt to integrate the program came up and it did successfully add the icon and then nothing. When I ran it from the terminal I get a module.js:545 error. I've copied the error message below along with the Arch version information.

Having both of these settings enabled causes some undesired (?) behavior. I'm happy to look at it sometime later this week and see if I can come up with something if you'd like.
No notification what so ever.
Support for Brew
Can't ALT-TAB back into the program when minimized. I can still get messages, but I have to re-launch the program if I want to send any.
System Information
It would be convenient to have an option to auto-start this electron app on login/startup. The auto-launch npm package is a neat method of implementation that is compatible with Windows, MacOS, and Linux.
So, I'm loving this app.
But everytime it updates, I find myself pouring closed issues to see what might be new. Any way we can get a change log for new releases?
Thanks for all you do!
If having a conversation with someone with Android Messages, and you Tab to another window and then back, it would be very helpful if we could force a focus back to text message
control, it loses its focus at the moment requiring a click.
On Windows 7 clicking the notifications is not opening the chat. Not sure if this is a new feature or if it's just not working right on 7. Will try on Linux when I'm not on my work computer later tonight.
If I add this app to my login items, when it opens up it gets stuck on the blank white screen which normally occurs before it goes to the blue splash screen
Mac Requests:
Add Icon to Menu Bar; Have menu bar change number or highlight blue when a new message shows up (See Tweetbot as a prime example)
Prevent Cmd+Q from fully quitting the app, allowing you to get notifications for new messages still (Similar to Evernote Helper)
Cmd+W is broken; doesn't close the window.
I don't get the proper icon in gnome, only a "?"
I'm going to attempt building and get this working on my Arch machine. I'm also going to build a PKGBUILD to put on the AUR.
It would be nice to have some type of "Check for update" option or something similar to be notified when there is a new version available to download.
I have noticed with 0.30 there is now a mac menubar icon.
Can you please add a toggle to remove it?
I would like to be able to choose the dock or menubar or both without either/or getting filled up with unnecessary icons.
thanks.
most apps on MacOS have a "Hide " menu item as well as a "Hide Others". I actually went to use it today and noticed it was missing.
When I start Android Messages from the command prompt, the program window opens fine, but in the cmd window I get the following:
Checking for update
Update for version 0.3.0 is not available (latest version: 0.3.0, downgrade is disallowed).
checkforUpdateAndNotify called, but downloadPromise is null
This is followed by a blinking cursor, but I can't type anything else into the command prompt. If I close the cmd window, it terminates Android Messages.
Not really sure what this is about, but I'd appreciate if you were able to fix it. I want to be able to create a batch file that starts Android Messages, among other things, but this is preventing the batch file from completing. Thanks
When waking Mac from sleep/hibernation randomly the app will cause the dock/finder to freeze and cannot regain use of my system without a hard start. (Might be an electron problem?)
I have to stop using it when on battery power for the moment.
I am on macOS 10.13.5 using MBP 2016
