Repository structure

Suggest move the USFM files into a folder called usfm.

This would be a less cluttered appearance to visitors.

Also suggest add a README.md file at top level.

False Quotes

Appearing throughout, mostly before cap W at the beginning of a saying, but Anderson NT does not use quotes.

Small Capitals

Romans 8:39: Section title already moved to Romans 9:1, but remains as plain text end of verse. (REMOVED directly from text.)

Matthew 27:37 THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS > \sc this is the king of the jews\sc*
Mark 15:26 ... KING OF THE JEWS > \sc king of the jews\sc*
Luke 23:38 ... THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS > \sc this is the king of the jews\sc*
John 19:24 ... JESUS THE NAZABENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. > \sc jesus the nazarene, the king of the jews\sc*

(Directly updated NAZABENE > NAZARENE.)

Acts 17:23 ... TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. > \sc to the unknown god.\sc*
Revelation 17:5 MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS, AND OF THE IDOLATROUS POLLUTIONS OF THE EARTH. > \sc mystery, babylon the great, the mother of harlots, and of the idolatrous pollutions of the earth.\sc*

I suspect the decision to keep the all caps is intentional, so I haven't done the \sc ... \sc* changes yet.

2 Thess 1:12

For I know in whom ... not For I know whom ...

Textual differences in Romans

Romans 1:17 should read:

\v 17 For in it the righteousness of God by faith is revealed, in order to faith: as it is written, He that is justified by faith, shall live.

The phrase "God’s plan of justifying men" is not found in the 1866 printing.

There are 4 more locations in Romans where the above phrase or similar needs to be replaced.

  • Romans 3:5
  • Romans 3:21
  • Romans 3:22
  • Romans 10:3 (2x)

PDF is source, not output

The file in the PDF's tree is a source file, and should be marked as such (probably in a different folder named sources).

The expectation where it is (a folder named PDF) is that it is an alternate output of the source text.

Someone pulling the PDF, hoping to get a cut/pasteable text, finds instead poor ocr under images.

The Anderson NT was a paragraphed translation

I have a copy of the University of Michigan facsimile reprint of the Anderson NT.

It's clearly a paragraphed translation.

Currently the USFM files have a \p marker before every verse.
Most of these should be removed, leaving a paragraph tag only before each original paragraph.

You can see the original paragraph layout in the PDF download from the Internet Archive.

Further improvements & corrections

I just found a winch in the text, which (in a way) is quite appropriate for a Mechanical Engineer.

II Corinthians 4:13: But, having the same spirit of faith, according to that winch is written, I believed, and for this reason I have spoken; we also believe, and for this reason we speak,

Status: Fixed in my new branch further_improvements.

Published Chapter labels.

This is more of a comment.

The \cl label produces an extra row of text with the label for the chapter appearing as a section title (centered heading.)

The \cp tag replaces the number and is embedded into the first paragraph of the chapter as a drop cap number.

For printing this work, I'm adjusting the \cl labels to be \cp .. \cp* tags on the \c row. This produces chapter numbers in the first paragraph instead of chapter titles only a few characters long.

For the books without chapters, I'm adding the published chapter number \cp ~ \cp* to invoke a missing chapter number.

None of this appears in the source SFM.

The words that start or end with a hyphen need checking & correcting, as do a few words that are not spelled correctly.

Etonians !

Acts 16:37 contains a very amusing typo!
