kodachi's Issues

A way of searching applications in the desktop bar

When, typically on windows or lots of linux distributions you have in the left down side a menu from which you can search the applications you want. In Kodachi, you have not any search bar. You click on it and you have to manually search the applications from categories and that is pretty annoying.

So, could you change the desktop environment or do anything to make that search possible?

Thanks.

Caution: VPN is off...

I I installed kodachi3 in VirtualBox, when I started the session and started the conky ... I see the following messages "Caution: VPN is off ...", "Tor disabled no vpn", "DnsCrypt Off", what can I do?

What to expect on 7.7

7.7

Solved:
-Swap issue : In persistence mode, aren't swap files added from Panic room supposed to be permanent as well? Mine get lost on reboot. Thanks for suggestions.
-Country null for 149.3.170.102 on vpn
-ip = isp ip the ips are not shown
-Bandwidht 100 GB warning and 200GB shutdown
Bandwidth limiti in kodachi

  • All local common variables that are stored in local json have been moved to a remote json.
  • Tor browser guarded node change on reboot
  • Country resolve has been improved for non available records
  • Torify script improved
  • Syslogs will show you Kodachi web json as well
  • Concky information windows set to transparent
  • No ping before VPN
  • Tor made better
  • systemhealth much faster
  • wipe improvement
  • show system information
  • spoof host name
  • change timezone based on ip
  • New country and ip revolvers where added increase decentralization
  • Bash command history disabled

7.6
1-it would be nice to have more keyboard and language options, keyboard meaning like dvorak, colemack, the workman, etc
2- move to 20.04 LTS
3- https://github.com/Whonix/kloak
4- #25
5-Add softethervpn client. That it was already configured as having a vpn. It's a great protocol, does a good job of censorship, bypasses dpi, is much faster than openVPN, and is equally secure. Dear developer, add this release to the list of available ones, this will significantly increase the safety and relevance of the distribution.

8- Cleaner script

sudo killall firefox
sudo bleachbit -c system.rotated_logs firefox.* bash.history libreoffice.* system.clipboard system.tmp system.trash transmission.*

sudo wipe -rf /var/log/
sudo wipe -rf /home/kodachi/.kbase/core
sudo wipe -rf /home/kodachi/core
sudo wipe -rf /root/core
sudo wipe -rf /core

sudo sync && sudo echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches;

sudo sdmem -f;

sudo shutdown -h now;

Pending old
11-
1- add bookmark "m.kuku.lu" in borwser beside temporary emails in browser
2- add file download applications beside filezila and submission
3- add "freenet"
4- add "wireguard" internet tools( better than openvpn)
5- add other free vpns in openvpn

onion address for site as its been blocked by some
SSLYE check domain keys
check models review them - Add tor country on level and tests
One thing we could add to Kodachi to make it super god of security OS is to make a script that looks up the IP country and changes system time to the timezone of this country.
use killswitch for some vpns providers
wireguard and then NORDVPN
Add lite version of Kodachi
Mac change net loss issue
Virtualbox Guest Additions
Tails similar language selector
Add multi threading on scripts ( speed test) - validation vps

Live Persistance

I would like to try this distro within a partitioned USB drive. So far I tried to make two ext4 partitions, namely /dev/sdb1 (2.1G) and /dev/sdb2/ (remaining space where I would later use LUKS container). I run dd if=kodachi.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=1M; sync but the drive isn't working.

edit: I might have forgot to set bootable flag at /dev/sdb1. Will try that and report back. Thanks!

Persistence in Versions 7+

I must be missing the obvious here. I am not a stranger to linux or to Kodachi (great distro btw) so this is likely someting silly that is staring me right in the face.

I have tried versions 7 and 7.1 to create a persistent USB via every recommended method (rufus, manual, Universal USB, etc) and some not so recommended methods and thus far, they all have the same results. It will boot successfully into persistence - once. After the first use, the drive is no longer bootable. Simply booting into persistence, dropping a plaintext "test" file on the desktop and then rebooting is enough to kill the drive.

Edited to add: when I say "no longer bootable", I mean the system bios no longer recognizes it as a bootable drive so when selected as the boot device, it just cycles back to the bios. the boot process never makes it to the OS.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Joe

Repo update v3.7 -> v5.7

Hi, Warith, thanks for great work you've done so far with kodachi.

Any plans on releasing latest v5.7 build scripts here?

Since you've mentioned on your kodachi page that
Kodachi is open source project under Apache License 2.0 and above all custom codes used on Kodachi are in plain text bash scripts that I wrote myself and they are included with the ISO package no compiled binaries no hidden codes! Kodachi source code is available in GitHub._

I had few Ideas maybe to add to your distribution.
Again, great work, thanks.

No ARM Version!

Hi, please provide us with ARM version of your operating system. ARM is more and more adopted. Also new M1 macs are ARM only so we can't even use it on those. Thank you.

Inventory notification

Your tool/software has been inventoried on Rawsec's CyberSecurity Inventory.

https://inventory.rawsec.ml/operating_systems.html#Linux%20Kodachi

What is Rawsec's CyberSecurity Inventory?

An inventory of tools and resources about CyberSecurity. This inventory aims to help people to find everything related to CyberSecurity.

  • Open source: Every information is available and up to date. If an information is missing or deprecated, you are invited to (help us).
  • Practical: Content is categorized and table formatted, allowing to search, browse, sort and filter.
  • Fast: Using static and client side technologies resulting in fast browsing.
  • Rich tables: search, sort, browse, filter, clear
  • Fancy informational popups
  • Badges / Shields
  • Static API
  • Twitter bot

More details about features here.

Note: the inventory is a FLOSS (Free, Libre and Open-Source Software) project.

Why?

  • Specialized websites: Some websites are referencing tools but additional information is not available or browsable. Make additional searches take time.
  • Curated lists: Curated lists are not very exhaustive, up to date or browsable and are very topic related.
  • Search engines: Search engines sometimes does find nothing, some tools or resources are too unknown or non-referenced. These is where crowdsourcing is better than robots.

Why should you care about being inventoried?

Mainly because this is giving visibility to your tool, more and more people are using the Rawsec's CyberSecurity Inventory, this helps them find what they need.

Badges

The badge shows to your community that your are inventoried. This also shows you care about your project and want it growing, that your tool is not an abandonware.

Feel free to claim your badge here: http://inventory.rawsec.ml/features.html#badges, it looks like that Rawsec's CyberSecurity Inventory, but there are several styles available.

Faild to load amdgpu firmware

Failed to load amdgpu firmware on my Asus Zenbook 14UM425QA
AMD Ryzen 5 5600H
But I've tested live xubuntu 22.04 and some other linux OS and they works well from usb.
Any chance to see new build which will be based on ubuntu 22.04 or debian 11 with non free firmware ? Or maybe you can add build script for own needs which can be used to choose what OS use as main?

Add LinuxTracker.org Kodachi torrent on the website

https://linuxtracker.org/index.php?page=torrents&search=&category=2239&active=1
They work on tracking multiple of popular Linux distros, and they've indeed made torrents for your distros.
Has you've don't really maintain those torrents directly, it might be preferable to either, link the latest torrent page of the latest Kodachi OS version available, or just link this following page category, and precise that those are non official torrents from Linuxtracker.org.

convert newmac to gui

@WMAL nice to see this milestone.
I am interested in general .
Can you suggest a script to start with.i hope [simple & important]

electron is good for this but for end user it's not a big difference if I start with Java, while it's available in base system. >>
I prefer because :
a. I know much
b. easy to track complexity.
c. FXML is lovely GUI.
d. cross platform. we can use this final tool across other distros. no GUI barriers.

If we agreed about which framework to use.

from your side please .

  1. select script to try
  2. describe & doc

from my side.

  1. design prototype
  2. coding GUI

Spoof Mac automatically

Set by default a new MAC automatically, every time we run Kodachi, instead of doing it manually.

[Improvement request] Set default more secure values

Check by default:

-Block traffic if Tor is down
-Kill Tor if VPN is down
-Block traffic on VPN down
-Autochange timezone based on IP
...

Or anyway to have a file and upload it to restore the boxes I have checked when I run again (without having installed kodachi)? I mean if there is some way of making more fast the process instead of checking the boxes every time I run kodachi.

Thanks.

Project Collaboration

Hi! I just found out about Kodachi and am excited more talent is being invested in the privacy space. I am a Whonix dev (also an anonymity project) and I invite you to check out our packages for useful common things you can adopt and collaborate on.

Some packages that may be of interest:

https://github.com/Whonix/onion-grater
This is a python filter that prevents user apps from sending dangerous commands to Tor that could deanonymize a user in case the program in compromised. It is flexible and supports profiles for different apps)

https://github.com/Whonix/lkrg
LKRG is a security module for thwarting some classes of Linux malware. We've packaged it for Debian but with some modification you can use it on Ubuntu).

Feel free to join our Telegram channel and say hi: t.me/Whonix

Questions:

I was wondering what version of gnunet you are running? Is it a prepackaged one from ubuntu repos?

Are you running gnunet over Tor or clearnet?

Little Linux services suggestions

Alright, I’ve did said that i probably have not enough real experience with Linux or even web researches to be worth suggesting that, But I’ll do that anyway because I like to be that person.

  • Kloak https://github.com/vmonaco/kloak
Aim to counter keyboard fingerprinting, system-wise.
  • Howdy https://github.com/boltgolt/howdy
More a quality of life enhancement, than an actual security measure, so this should absolutely be turned off by default if incorporated into KodachiOS.
A FOSS alternative to Windows Hello, to sudo everything with only facial recognition.
  • grapheneX https://github.com/grapheneX/grapheneX
A python program, aiming to automatized different hardening points. (Probably already configured into KodachiOS)

Little questions and suggestion about the Firefox configurations.

So, being now a user of KodachiOS, freshly installed on my netbook (Because I tend to lose USB drives, and because this netbook is actually trashable in case that I need to protect my data anyway, outside of using the Nuked partition).
I’m really more an amateur of privacy security tools and methods, so i’ll indeed would not lie on that part, but having researched a lot on web browser privacy hardening, I do have some questions on the current default configuration (I’ll considerate the Loaded Browser configuration, and refers to the configuration listed on this Github as i’ve already replaced and reconfigured some parts myself for my use.)

  • You are using the Browser Plugs Font anti-fingerprinting standalone extension, alongside other Canvas anti-fingerpinting extension like CanvasBlocker. Wouldn’t be much more practical to instead use the complete Browser Plugs Privacy extension which actually include a dashboard for both methods of protection? Here's an example being used on the LibreFox configuration documentation https://github.com/intika/Librefox#recommended-addons

  • Why including the Disable WebRTC extension, when it can be deactivated manually in the configuration? (Thing, that I suppose, is surely already done in the GHack´s configuration used) Here's the section of privacytools website explaining how to deactivate it manually https://www.privacytools.io/browsers/#webrtc

  • Same goes for the disable JavaScript extension, I suppose it is as a simple way to activate it manually for some websites, but why not use the already built-in JavaScript control in uBlock Origin?
    Capture d’écran de 2019-08-25 10-51-54_modifiée

  • The DuckDuckGo Privacy extension addon is... useless? I mean, with all those other extensions already installed, it doesn’t really do much. And since DuckDuckGo is even already in the default selection of search engines of Firefox, why not just select it by default? (And, if isn’t the case with this configuration, adding it as a search extension would do the same job)

So, If this was all the extensions installed, here's some of my suggestions for the Loaded Browser.

  • Use a tad more advanced Adblocker, Don’t get me wrong, uBlock Origin is fantastic, and gets the job done, but I would like to suggest you two others forks of it:
    • Adnauseam by the same devs as TrackMeNot (I don’t recommend that one tho, as it will call the very first search engines you really don’t want to use, and Kodachi already got a much more advanced Noise generator), the main particularity with it comes from the fact that it virtually clicks on every ad, and so, destroying your advertising tracking profile. The only downside really, is that it might be making you more traceable as that ¨web user who click on everything¨, but I let you consult it and do some research on it to find if it suits KodachiOS, as i´ts just one of my speculations.
    • Nano AdBlocker, Basically, uBlock Origin, in more advanced. For the simple user, It functions exactly as the classic uBlock Origin (apart some extra buttons as you can compare to that other uBlock Origin screenshot I’ve done) Capture d’écran de 2019-08-25 11-09-35
  • Nano Defender, also related to Nano AdBlocker, but this one works with uBlock Origin (And forks too normally, I recall being able to make it work with Adnauseam too when I was using it), It's an Anti-Adblock protector. And it's really an ¨Install and forget¨ extension. Outside of using Nano Adblocker tho (And just enabling the Nano Defender integration in the filter list), Making it work with uBlock Origin need some configuration to be done with it, but it's pretty well explained and shouldn’t be that difficult.
  • Buster: Captcha Solver for humans because a torrified network, obviously mean that you will get a lot more of these in the wild. This one actually works for me, compared to those userscripts which affect the reCaptcha script in order to make it faster to resolve. Buster, ironically use Google Voice recognition API (By default, but they’re other API’s that you can set up in the settings) to resolve those voice CAPTCHA, which are normally reserved for those with visions problems. It works really well, but it does have it's fair percentage of failure with it, mainly due to some specific reCaptcha configurations instead than its audio recognition. Some times, the reCaptcha would report that it detected the use of macros and will request you to refresh the page to retry. (Can’t use Buster in that case), or it will do the same type of ¨Failed test, retry again¨ that you get often when using TOR and need you to pass more than two minutes on each of them. (Retrying multiple times to work tho in that case). It does have a Linux integration with its service in order to try to bypass the first issue, by trying to replicate humans inputs in which you can consult their repo here. If you want to test it, I’ll let you try yourself to configure it correctly, either it isn’t accurate enough to indeed fix the first issue, or i just couldn’t make it work. (The only times, It just did a little horizontal movement of my mouse for a view second during the CAPTCHA process, but a straight line doesn’t really look like human like to me).
  • CSS Exfil Protection. This should protect you against a specific type of CSS injection fingerprinting technique, but it is... maybe too specific to be actually used somewhere else in the wild. Nonetheless, here it is.
  • HTTPZ. While HTTPS Everywhere is good, Its main flaw point is that it relies on updated rules to be effective. HTTPZ, instead, just try to make HTTPS works for all websites on its own without this rules issue.
  • Decentraleyes or Local CDN, aims to fix the issue, with Content Delivery Networks on consulted websites. It just delivers those libs locally instead of calling their servers directly (Which could be Google ones, Amazon, or Cloudflare ones to name only a few). I’m not really sure the difference between the two however, as Local CDN is a fork of Decentraleyes itself. I think from what I’ve searched, that Decentraleyes tend to break more websites due to the way it operates, blocking the CDN connection entirely, and trying to deliver the appropriate lib itself which could result this website to not use the forced Decentraleyes one, while Local CDN tend to try to convince the website to use the local one by modifying the requested script to redirect to the local one to be used. Again, I suppose it's too much technical for me to explain it professionally.

And also, those which could be redundant with the other extensions according to me.

  • Privacy Badger, the pretty well-known EFF extension, which aim to learn and block new trackers which could be, not already listed in your adblocker lists yet all by itself.
  • Privacy Possum an extension, which operate on diverse points automatically to block, or at least, break trackers functionality. They got some interesting documents also, about the capabilities of Privacy Possum here : https://github.com/cowlicks/privacypossum/tree/master/docs

And, some misc things :

  • Snowflake, the hot new TOR project extension, which... well it's just an automatized TOR node in an extension form. Not good for our privacy in itself since we became a public node for TOR, and probably even a bit stupid to add Kodachi OS according to me, since it requires Web RTC to enabled, and seems ironically if you became a TOR node while using TOR nodes simultaneously. Still, worth including it according to me.
  • CHEF-KOCH Extensions configs Not the real name, But it proposes some pretty great already made configs for some extensions used here. I would like however to say one thing, Test and configure his uBlock config. It is, too much overkill for the habitual KodachiOS (And me) use.
  • LibreWolf Privacy config a still actively maintained LibreFox privacy config for Firefox, which was in itself, based on the GHacks config.

VirtualBox / VMware

Hello. This is not as much an issue as a question. Is it possible to somehow install and run a VirtualBox or VMware application on Kodachi? And one more. How would you rate it in comparison with Tails, Qubes, Whonix, ...? Are there any advantages / disadvantages? Thanks.

VPN IP same as ISP IP

The VPN IP keeps popping up same as ISP IP even when connecting to different vpn servers and wifi or internet networks. How do i fix this?

cannot connect vpn

We cannot connect to VPN in China. If build your own VPN, the government will recognize and block the IP address. so I bulid a shadowsocks to proxy my computer, when I proxy the entire system by shadowsocks, I find I cannot install privoxy、redsocks、polipo etc. So I want to know how to proxy the system by shadowsocks.

I hope your response!!!!
Best wishes to you

RAM consumption + Exposed backgrounds + Resolution + Mac Address

Comparing both the original 18.04 LTS and Kodachi's, browsers take out more ram and wrap up quickly to where the computer sometimes freezes even when it's a newly installed chrome for daily use, the fan is working more than normal.

The grub, login and desktop backgrounds are better left abstract without any hint to security (anonymous symbols), it's concerning if someone sees it, it could lead to misunderstandings even when you're legally abiding. We all know with more security comes more suspicion, imagine walking with body guards at the capital, first guess is, what are you hiding ? I say this to say that Kodachi users don't want to be known. Yes, it is for security and not penetration testing but again, why tell ?

Resolution is high and the DPI is so small that it's tiring to change on every boot, not everyone has a big screen. an XH DPI or an auto adjust script would be awesome.

A lot want to use this OS for daily activity but the constantly changing mac address is troubling, dnsCrypt can be kept and it's okay to use it, but changing the mac address automatically will disallow office users or any corporate people from relying on it when they want to go casual again.

The rest is good ! Kodachi is the best configuration seen so far.

cant get persistence

Hello there, I was testing kodachi since some days now but cant get the persistence to work. I downloaded the 4gb zip, then boot from usb and put file on root directory. But I must be doing something wrong since that way is not working, any help ? I am using kodachi 6.0, the message at boot says " unable to find the persistent medium mount ; mounting/cow/root failed : invalid argument overlay mount failed"
Thank you

8.16 version based on...

Hello Warith!

The first thing is before, sorry to use github for this matter.

Discord or twitter ask for too much personal data that I don't feel like revealing.

My opinion about the new version (8.16), is that the simpler the better.

If we already have a strong and stable base, why use something based on that base.

Personally I prefer that you opt for Debian.

Despite the difficulties that could cause to use the repositories contrib or non-free.

Surely the support for new hardware is better in Ubuntu, and surely it is also better in Mx linux (I have never used it).
But surely bloatware is also more abundant in this type of distributions.

And nothing else, that's all.

Thank you for giving the world such a magnificent distribution and service.

PS: If the desktop were Mate... For me, the distro would be a hoot!

Questions + Suggestions

This is quite a nice (X)Ubuntu fork!

I have compiled some questions and suggestions, which I will mention here. I realize raising multiple issues this way may potentially be annoying, but please bear with me as (i) they were compiled over some time and (ii) I have a list of bugfixes / features / improvements I intend to code on a fork and return to as a PR for your convenience.

KODACHI QUESTIONS

  1. What needs to be edited to edit the dashboard? If it's proprietary could you at least kindly let me know which script is called by the "repair network" button? Is it the "Kodachi-Dashboard.gambas" file? Nano can't parse it, what do I need to use?
  2. How can I see what is happening when the VPN is attempting to connect via the dashboard? It would be ideal if you could see terminal-like output in the dashboard itself. There's room for it.
  3. DNSSEC is not mentioned anywhere. How to ensure its usage?
  4. What is the fail-safe DNS and how to override it so that DNS uses only my whitelisted resolvers?
  5. If you enable VPN/tor kill switch(es) does this prevent reconnection, thus requiring manual settings change each time a connection is lost then being re-established? (I think the answer is "yes" and if it's open source I can quickly offer an enhancement to the logic...)
  6. I'm getting a message from Proton's CLI app that the GTK is too old to work? Is it safe to update? OpenVPN is a security nightmare. Would be nice to have Wireguard enabled by default, either directly or via Proton CLI.
  7. Multihop VPNs seem to break some of the Dashboard's logic, true or false?
  8. Why proxychains3 (ancient) instead of proxychains4?
  9. I notice there's no antivirus per se. What are you using for the "rootkit hunter"?
  10. Discord is adamantly anti-privacy. Suspiciously so. Even more so than Github. Why is that the primary community instead of something like Element, Matrix, Jabber, etc... and if you're married to it, why isn't it included in the OS as a tool?
  11. How to forcefully refresh dashboard info?
  12. Is it just me or do things like connecting to VPN take several times longer if launched via the dashboard relative to using a terminal?
  13. Tools to analyze not only DNS leakage but DNS poisoning?
  14. This isn't the 1990's, why is Python 2 the default and the Python3 is 4 versions out of date? I'm not trying to be a jerk, just wondering if it's going to break stuff if Python is modernized in a fork / branch.
  15. What's the difference between forcevpntraffic and forcevpntrafficall? Are they mutually exclusive with enabling Tor over VPN?
  16. On the desktop wallpaper info (which is very cool, BTW) what is meant by "Anonymouse" and "Privacy"? I take it that one of the 2 are your recommended configuration. I can't tell if Anonymouse is misspelled or if you're referring to Anonymouse.org
  17. Clipman is a nice tool but also practically a keylogger. Can it be disabled easily somehow?
  18. It seems there's a login keychain protected by a password that doesn't correspond to any password I setup or what I believe is the default password in Kodachi?

I will keep most of my suggestions to myself and code them for you, unless you're soliciting them. Two exceptions:

  1. Please provide and utilize a whitelist IPs / domains for OpenSnitch so we don't have to guess if the traffic is malicious or part of Kodachi (even with the "centralized" option to get an IP from digi77, so many connections to Reddit, wikipedia, IP addresses, etc...)
  2. 1 button to (i) repair the network, then (ii) connect to VPN, then (iii) set DNS to use the VPN DNS or DNSCrypt then (iv) force VPN traffic only, then (v) layer Tor on top of VPN and (vi) test privacy / settings. I can code this for you but in case the dashboard is super proprietary I thought I should go ahead and make the suggestion.

Does a way to update to new versions of KodachiOS will be made ?

I personally use Kodachi on a encrypted persistent installation on my netbook, has I tend to lose my usb keys, and because this netbook is trashable in case I need to ruin it in addition to nuke it.
However, I've setup KodachiOS already to be more adapted for my use (Customized Firefox profile, Couple of software removed and installed, reconfiguration of the desktop to be more adapted to smaller screens).
And the issue of having to redo that for each version of KodachiOS, either if i had made those configurations on my USB key or on my persistent installation is that i need to reconfigure all of it.

I just wanted to know if such "update" tool would be made next.
Either a script that will make the needed modifications to update one KodachiOS version to another , or even, just a manual little "tutorial" showing how to update it ourselves. (Like, in the update logs, something like "updated a new vpn provider OpenVPN profile", and then, having the additional new profiles files to be used to be added manually)

add tox messenger to a distro

Hey Warith, thanks for updating repo to v5.7, looking forward for v6 update.

Since kodachi is positioned as anonymous os, it seems that Tox project would be a great fit here.
I had an idea to add qTox client (https://tox.chat/clients.html) to your distribution.
It can be either binary https://tox.chat/download.html or built from sources https://github.com/qTox/qTox.
There's no active deb repository now (https://blog.tox.chat/2018/02/shutdown-of-the-debian-and-ubuntu-package-repository/) although there are few initiatives there qTox/qTox#4816
