docsafterdark's Introduction

DocsAfterDark

Chrome Web Store Mozilla Add-on

DocsAfterDark relieves eye-strain from the Google Docs experience with a focus on functionality and artful design.

Easily enable or disable dark mode for any document without modifying the original project. Access dark mode settings and more in the extension option menu, which can be accessed by clicking on the extension icon in the browser toolbar.

Customize the document background to a darker shade, or use any valid background CSS value in the custom field, including images, gradients, and transparent backgrounds.*

With the invert and grayscale options, document content (excluding images*) will be rendered in a comfortable dark mode. By disabling the document border option, documents can blend into the background to create a seamless workspace.

To temporarily toggle dark mode on/off, click on the button in the bottom left corner of the page. Sometimes this button may block other elements, such as the word count widget. When this occurs, enable the Raise Button toggle in the option menu.

The global toggle in the option menu can be used to disable/enable the extension.

*May be unstable on Chrome, Edge, and Opera

Available on Firefox Add-Ons, Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-Ons, and Opera.

docsafterdark's Issues

Add option to avoid changing document or add compatibility with "Pageless" page setup

I would love an option that ignores changing the color of the document completely, and only turns the surrounding bars and menus to dark mode. This functionality is currently impossible when the document is set to "Pageless" instead of "Pages".

As my document color settings were already dark, I could previously use this extension with "Document Background" set on Custom with its settings blank, allowing me to keep my set document colors while turning the rest of the page to dark mode.

Now that the Document Background slider is disabled, the extension automatically changes my document; checking inverted is marginally better, but it's still affecting my font and background colors in a way that isn't ideal. It does still work when the document is set to "Pages", but something about the "Pageless" option changes the functionality.

I understand changes on Google's side has broken the Document Background function, but even if it returns, I think an explicit way to ignore the document instead of my blank "Custom" workaround would be nice.

Sheets?

This is a question instead of an issue. I was going to phrase it as an issue, being something to the effect of this doesn't work in sheets, but after researching other similar addons I realized this is how it is for all of them, at least that I've found.

So my question is, is there any way to make this work with Sheets?

If not, do you plan on adding Sheets?

I know we can use addons such as Dark Reader, which works well enough, but I hate how colors are inverted, which makes it difficult to format when using colors.

If anyone knows of a better way to do this, I would appreciate knowing how.

Outline Subheader Color Unreadable

My settings:

The result:

I would expect the color to also be white like the level 1 header above it.

This is what it looks like without the extension:

Inverted colors of images in a doc.

On Chrome, any images I am inserting into document have also inverted colors. This is the only thing that I find problematic, everything else works super nice:

Pageless Background not working anymore after 0.6.1

In pageless documents the document background is dark grey now, no matter what I choose in the settings. I used to work in the previous version but since the update I can no longer choose the document background color in pageless docs.

Missing dark mode for comments dialog

Issue

Missing dark mode for .docs-docos-activitybox.docos-enable-new-header.docos-streampanesize.docs-docos-activitybox-round-corners element and child elements. Text, icons, borders, and the checkmark in dropdown menu require fixing.

Citation Menu is incompatible with Dark Mode

The Citation Menu is incompatible with Dark Mode, the text is white with a white text box, and DocsAfterDark needs to be toggled (with the bottom on the bottom left) to be visible and usable.

Summary Menu now white

Only happened in the last few days, but now the summary sidebar background is showing up white, maybe an update on drive itself?

Text sometimes shows up in white background

Screen Shot 2022-05-10 at 11 16 59 AM

First off thanks so much for Docs after Dark, this is exactly the add-on I was looking for on Firefox!

Unfortunately I have this weird issue where some of the text shows up in a white box. No matter what the background color is, this whiteboxing happens.

It doesn't happen when I start a document from scratch and I don't know how to get into this state, unfortunately...

This is happening on a document that somebody else started and has made edits on. To get it to show up I copy/pasted into a new document and then changed the text so it was something I could upload for you to see.

Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Idea: A slider option for changing the grayscale_value

A slider option for changing the grayscale_value would be great. For example,
const grayscale_value = "contrast(79%) grayscale(20%)";
Here 20% is giving me the color I needed.

Doing it with a slider will be great.

Page setup dialog text unreadable in dark mode

When you go File>Page Setup, and select Pageless, the dialog has the text

The pageless format allows you to add wide images and tables, and consume content without the interruption of page breaks

The text is nearly unreadable in dark mode - it wasn't changed to be white/gray text when dark mode is activated.

Sheets support?

Hello,
would you consider extending your extension to support Google Sheets?

One I managed to find that works with Sheets is quite outdated/broken, rest of them only do Docs and don't seem to have active development.

Slides & Sheets

I love what you have done with this, but could you please add support for Google Slides & Sheets?

[Firefox] Doesn't work on Google Sheets

I might be going on a limb here, but since Sheets is part of Google Docs I assumed it would work with it. There's no effect on my browser. It does work well on Documents though.

Chapter selection unsupported

The chapter bar to the left is no longer working. It was before, but now it appears as the default white in all settings.

Extension not applying dark theme correctly inside of firefox.

Dark gdocs extension issue
This is basically it here. For whatever reason it is not applying correctly.
I have the latest extension version available in the Firefox addons store, and I am currently on Firefox 104.0.2. I am also running openSUSE tumbleweed, not sure if that matters though.

Theme isn't remembered for new tabs

Using Firefox, changing the theme isn't "sticky" when opening a new doc in another tab.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a Google doc, Docs After Dark it sets the theme to Dark.
  2. Click the toggle in the lower left to set it to Light.
  3. In a new tab, open a different Google Doc.

RESULT: the 2nd Google Doc opens in Dark mode even though Iโ€™ve just set the mode to Light.
EXPECTED RESULT: global toggle that is maintained across tabs.

REQUEST Automate moving the toggle button up when there's something in the way

Currently the toggle button moves up when you click on the raise toggle option. While this is a fantastic feature, I feel that it would be cool if the button moves automatically when it's covering something.
Screen Shot 2022-09-28 at 10 49 19 AM
For example, when I want to view word count the button covers up the word count toggle which can get annoying. But obviously I can just click the raise toggle option to fix this as shown below.
Screen Shot 2022-09-28 at 10 51 01 AM
While it does fix the issue, I think it might be cool if the toggle button moves up automatically. That way I don't have to go into the extension page to move it and I can just keep focusing on whatever I am working on.

Overall, its great extension and I can't thank you enough for creating and working on this!!!

Text colour unchanged

Attempted to use Docsafterdark on Windows 11 using updated Firefox (121.01). When changing to 'dark' or 'black' modes, the text is unchanged. In 'black' mode, this of course makes the text unreadable.

Can find no settings for changing font / text colour in the extension.

Misbehavior in various browsers

With identical settings (and identical version - actual 0.5.2) i have not identical behavior of the extension (in the same file).
In Vivaldi (Chromium-based browser, extension from Chrome Store):

In Firefox (extension from official store):

Looks like a bug in Chromium-based browsers (I tested same file in the clear Chrome and had result as in Vivaldi).

Firefox dark mode is basically unreadable

For some reason my dark mode puts a weird white layer over the page which makes text unreadable. Changing background color and text color doesn't effect anything. I'm on Firefox with Windows 10 and I've turned all my extensions on and off with no change. It's been like this for a month at least.

Icon colors on Firefox with dark theme

When in Firefox with dark theme (and dark toolbar), the Docs After Dark's toolbar icon extension is almost invisible (especially so in "compact" mode and/or on high resolution screens). Here's a screenshot (right of "Aa", which is another light-on-dark extension):
image

Please crate alternative icon/image for dark Firefox (and probably other browsers, too). See https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tranquility-1 as an example.

This is useful especially because this extension is for evening/dark, or for people who like the dark background.

Opera Support?

The readme lists support for the Opera browser as in progress, with:

An Opera release is currently awaiting approval.

Are there any updates on an Opera full release?

Not working on FF 102 and 103

I installed this for the first time on Firefox 102 beta9 and it does not seem to be working - loading up a google spreadsheet then changing backround to the several options doesn't seem to do anything. Same thing with Firefox nightly (103).

I'm on wayland, if that makes any difference.

Search Icon Broken

The 'Search the menus' icon (leftmost in the menu toolbar) is no longer set to dark mode.
image

Text / Background disparity in Dictionary and Citations

You type white text on a white background. Drop down options in Citations are white with white text, but hovering over/selecting them returns them to normal dark mode (until you are not selecting an option/hovering over the drop-down option). Most buttons are also dark mode as expected.

DocsAfterDark v0.5.3,
Default, no invert, showing document border and normal button height.

Images set to "Behind Text" not displaying

With DocsAfterDark enabled, any images set to "Behind Text" aren't shown, and won't show until it's disabled. All other format options show the picture though.
Using 0.5.3 and Firefox 110.1

Invert option not affecting all pages

The invert feature does not seem to apply to all pages upon initial toggle.

A temporary solution to this problem would be to re-enable the invert option on the affected page.
