sickness's Introduction

Sickness

Tracking issues and data to figure out why I'm sick, using this Kanban board. Update: Thanks to this process, and the contributions of dozens of people here and on Twitter, I'm cured. The problem turned out to be chronic sleep insufficiency.

History

In the last week of August 2017, I developed the symptoms of a cold. It remained low level until September 4 2017, when I felt sick enough to take the day off of work. I never got better. After a month I figured I'd developed seasonal allergies (something I've never had before), but the symptoms were not alleviated by either taking over-the-counter allergy medications or by a week-long trip to India in October. In early November I finally went to my physician, who prescribed allergy medication. That began months of medical appointments to try to identify the source of the problem.

Symptoms

  • headache, often
  • fatigue
  • often sleepy
  • often have a runny nose or stuffy nose
  • foggy-headed
  • thinking is much less nimble
  • physical labor in hot weather is draining
  • easily made lightheaded by e.g. bending over

sickness's Issues

Try super-hydrating

96 ounces of fluid, daily, for a week.

I confess that I'm not entirely clear on the purpose of this, but a handful of people have assured me that they felt like me until they started drinking more water and then they felt better. Seems to me that if I were thirsty, I'd drink more, as one does. Here are the symptoms of dehydration:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Less frequent urination
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

Among these, I have only fatigue. I've been seriously dehydrated a few times in life, and it didn't feel like I feel.

Anyway, this shouldn't hurt anything so, sure, try it.

Consider visiting the Mayo Clinic

From what I gather, solving medical mysteries is a thing for them. They have locations in Rochester, Jacksonville, and Phoenix.

  • find out whether insurance covers them
  • get a referral there

Stop taking ibuprofen

I’ve been taking 400–800 mg daily for 15 months, due to an injury. Stop taking it and see if that helps.

See a nutritionist

By any definition, I eat really healthfully. But that doesn't mean that my diet is right for me. Perhaps this is dietary? See an expert.

MTHFR mutations?

These can cause fatigue, memory loss, and brain fog (among other symptoms that I do not have).

The standard treatment seems to be supplementing with methylcobalamin, methyl folate, and vitamins C and D.

Is nasal discharge actually CSF?

Doctor suggests that what I assume is mucus could be cerebrospinal fluid. Check whether it is clear, and whether it comes from just one nostril.

Mono?

I have no idea if this would have shown up in any of the existing tests (e.g. #6).

Try sleeping more

I get 7–8 hours of sleep each night, with an average of 7½ hours. That's well within recommended norms, but maybe that's just not enough.

Try sleeping more every night for a defined period.

  • figure out how many hours to experiment with
  • figure out how long I should do it for
  • do it
