srd_spells's Introduction

Archived

Please use 5eTools data instead.

This won't be getting additional updates as it's fairly behind already and much better versions of this exist now. The 5eTools version handles scaling, is much more complete, and has a better overall data structure.

Spells from the SRD

This is a JSON formatted list of all the spells from the SRD, automatically pulled from @ephe's very nice grimoire with permission. This list has been both automatically and manually inspected, but is still likely to contain errors.

General Format of a Spell

"description": "You hurl a bubble of acid. Choose one creature within range, or choose two creatures within range that are within 5 feet of each other. A target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d6 acid damage.\n\nThis spell's damage increases by 1d6 when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6)."
}

Formatting notes

The description preserves whitespace in the form of linebreak characters (\n). If you want to display descriptions correctly in html, either wrap the description with <pre> tags or replace the \n's with <br>.

srd_spells's Issues

Publish to npm

I'd love to consume the json via npm. Should be a simple thing, or perhaps .json files aren't typically hosted on npm?

Open to hearing your thoughts.

Non-SRD content

I would like to use this data for a project, but I'm concerned about the licensing. The readme says:

...contains content from the SRD and is restricted and covered by the OGL

However, there are some spells that are apparently non-SRD, like "Ice Knife", which as far as I know is part of EEPC and not released under OGL. Could we get any clarification about whether all of the content in spells.json was taken from SRD and can be safely used under OGL?

Generic "product Identity" replacement spells missing

While the SRD does not contain the Product Identity spell names (such as "Melf's Acid Arrow"), it does contain generic versions ("Acid Arrow") for most of them. Here is a nicely formatted version of that example: https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Acid%20Arrow (Almost?) all of them are currently missing from spells.json.

I think as of version 5.1 of the SRD, the list of generic spells missing from spells.json is:

Bigby's Hand (Arcane Hand)
Drawmij's Instant Summons (Instant Summons)
Evard's Black Tentacles (Black Tentacles)
Leomund's Secret Chest (Secret Chess)
Leomund's Tiny Hut (Tiny Hut)
Melf's Acid Arrow (Acid Arrow)
Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound (Faithful Hound)
Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion (Magnificent Mansion)
Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum (Private Sanctum)
Mordenkainen's Sword (Arcane Sword)
Nystul's Magic Aura (Arcanist’s Magic Aura)
Otiluke's Freezing Sphere (Freezing Sphere)
Otiluke's Resilient Sphere (Resilient Sphere)
Otto's Irresistible Dance (Irresistible Dance)
Rary's Telepathic Bond (Telepathic Bond)
Tasha's Hideous Laughter (Hideous Laughter)
Tenser's Floating Disk (Floating Disk)
