Heroku does has a caching mechanism, so that downloaded binaries can be reused. Perhaps this could also be used for packages which are downloaded and compiled.

Will investigate further.

Here's an improvement to init.R to only installed packages that aren't already installed

###########################################################
# Update this line with the R packages to install:
my_packages = c("nlme")

###########################################################

install_if_missing = function(p) {
  if (p %in% rownames(installed.packages()) == FALSE) {
    install.packages(p, dependencies = TRUE)
  }
  else {
    cat(paste("Skipping already installed package:", p, "\n"))
  }
}
invisible(sapply(my_packages, install_if_missing))
