  • Copy the above secrets line to your ~/.jira.yaml replacing the previous secrets line.

Update your user

  • Your username is now your full email address.
  • Example. I changed ober to [email protected]

Change URL to point to cloud Jira

  • Replace previous url with:

“`yaml url: https://linbsd.atlassian.net:443 “`

Features

  • Create issues from templates with environmental variables. (think Jenkins jobs for boilerplate issues)
  • Single static binary
  • Credentials stored locally encrypted with aes-256
  • Assign issues
  • Comment on issues
  • Create new issues
  • Use saved searches in your yaml config.
  • Open jira issue in browser
  • Transition issues between states. (e.g. Start, Resolve, Close)
  • Add watchers to issues.

Installation

Macos

brew tap ober/brew
brew install jira

Configuration

  • First thing you need to do is create a ~/.jira.yaml

Once you have added your secrets: output from the above command to your ~/.jira.yaml you should be able to run the commands

Commands

A walk through of typical Jira commands

Defining saved queries

Using saved queries allows you to invoke them directly.

  • Find all tickets opened by me
jira search "assignee = currentUser() AND status != Closed order by status DESC"
  • This can be simplified by adding this to the queries list in the ~/.jira.yaml as is show above, saved as myopen
  • Running a saved query is as follows
jira q myopen
keysummarypriorityupdatedlabelsstatusassigneecreatorreporterissuetypeprojectwatchersurl

Customizing the output.

Say you have line wraps happening because of too much data to fit on the screen. The search-fields list in the ~/jira.yaml controls the order, and inclusion of the fields you wish to see. The listing above are the default fields, and order. Feel free to omit the fields that matter least in order to avoid line wrapping.

Creating Tickets

Simple way

We run the command, without arguments, to get usage.

$ jira create
Wrong number of arguments. Usage is:
jira create <project> <summary> <description>

Now to create a test ticket

$ jira create DEVOPSY "This is a test" "Please Close"
{"id":"2118181","key":"DEVOPSY-0004","self":"https://jira.linbsd.org:8443/rest/api/2/issue/0004"}

Now let’s comment on it, then close it.

$ jira comment
Wrong number of arguments. Usage is:
jira comment <issue> <comment>
$ jira comment devopsy-0004 "closing this issue"

Let’s see the change

$ jira issue devopsy-0004
 Summary: This is a test
Description: The issue is open and ready for the assignee to start work on it.
State: Open
Priority: Medium-P3
Issue Type: Task
Description: Please Close
Summary: This is a test
Last Viewed: #!void
Created: 2019-11-07T18:39:23.000+0000
Status: Open
Reporter:  ober [email protected]
Project: devopsy

Subtasks:

Comments:
Comment:   on 2019-11-07T18:40:28.000+0000 said:
closing this issue
Assignee: ober [email protected]

Now we close it.

$ jira transition
Wrong number of arguments. Usage is:
jira transition <issue name> <transition id>
$ jira transitions devopsy-0005
| 721 | Block | Blocked | | This shows us the transition states we can move to. Let’s close!
idnametonametostate
4Start ProgressIn ProgressThis issue is being actively worked on at the moment by the assignee.
5Resolve IssueResolvedA resolution has been taken, and it is awaiting verification by reporter. From here issues are either reopened, or are closed.
2Close IssueClosedThe issue is considered finished, the resolution is correct. Issues which are closed can be reopened.
$ jira transition DEVOPSY-0005 2
OK

All done

Using templates

So typically we need to create tickets with specific values set. This is an entry from my ~/.jira.yaml that allows me to create a ticket assigned to me.

creations:
  DEVOPSY-ME:
    project: DEVOPSY
    summary: "#{summary}"
    assignee: "#{USER}"
    issuetype: Task
    priority: Medium-P3
    estimate: 10
    duedate: "2020-10-12"
    description: "#{description}"

This uses Ruby-esque string interpolation to handle variables. These currently are from the Environment. So USER is the value of my local Macos username.

$ jira run
Wrong number of arguments. Usage is:
jira run <creation name>
$ summary="this is a test part 2" description="This is the body of the issue" jira run DEVOPSY-ME
proj: 10071 sum: this is a test part 2 issuetype: 3 assignee: ober priority: Medium-P3 labels: (#f) estimate: 10 description: This is the body of the issue duedate: 2020-10-12 parent: #f
Primary issue: DEVOPSY-0004

There is a Jenkins job where we use this to create an Epic, and multiple subtasks.

Then from Jenkins we prompt for the parameters show as #{var} above and set those prior to calling jira run epic-for-testing The last line will reflect the Epic ticket id.
