OpenSUSE 12.2 64 bit and sound in Team Fortress 2.

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#351
@xammer85 posted at 2012-12-24T06:46:23Z:

In TF2 has no sound by default. In same time - Big Picture mode work with sound correctly. The reason - in default sound system. In OpenSUSE - pulseaudio. Installation of steam does not set SDL_AUDIODRIVER enviroment variable as

export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio

and everything works fine. This solution is struts. These changes must be introduced into the system during installation

Freeze, black screen when switching video mode

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#203
@andybalaam posted at 2012-12-21T09:03:11Z:

Team Fortress works with default settings here on 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10 with an NVIDIA Quadro 1000M using the nouveau driver.

But, when I try to switch mode, either to a window instead of fullscreen, or reducing the resolution but remaining in fullscreen mode, the game freezes, showing just a black screen.

Lacking Support for Japanese/Chinese Characters in Team Fortress 2

Currently, for Team Fortress 2, Japanese characters (hiragana, katakana and kanji) are not rendered. This makes reading the chat and plenty of player names impossible. Suspecting that it is a font issue, but not sure why Valve wouldn't be rolling their own font. On the other hand, the fonts used by Steam are general are worse under Linux.

TF2: Faulty keyboard layout detection while playing

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#141
@Spongeroberto posted at 2012-12-20T17:09:13Z:

My keyboard is has a Belgian layout (AZERTY). In TF2, the game always thinks I'm using a QWERTY keyboard. This happens while running around and playing, and also in the menus when trying to set the keys.

Interesting to note: in-game chat is not affected and correctly finds my Belgian keyboard layout.

This problem occured for me both on Ubuntu 12.10 and on Sabayon

Engine's Edict allocator doesn't work so well when a round ends (ALL)

We, along with many others, have suffered with this problem for years. When a round ends, the max-edict count is almost always increased. This was determined to be from a static 1? second timeout assigned before reallocating free edicts. I wrote, and use this https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=186830 which allows us to run our servers without crashing. However, I've been told it doesn't work so well under TF2, and the method is inherently unstable. There's also built-in engine functionality to perform an action when the max threshold is about to be hit. However, this is mostly bogus unfortunately, and will crash anyways since the check isn't in the create function.

You will sometimes see a major performance drop compared to the older drivers, and this error message will continuously be spammed in the developer console:

The current work around is to revert the optimizations that were done in the latest driver patch

But this is still an existing bug.

TF2: Set system requirements to block unsupported graphics cards

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#174
@timeimp posted at 2012-12-20T22:51:02Z:

Hi everyone,

As the coming of Serious Linux Gaming approaches, Steam has been released (finally! yay!) on Linux in a native form, allowing for many of us to play our most beloved games on our favourite OS.

Many of the newbies here seem to be running into driver issues and encountering new bugs all the time.

If you are unsure as to what your GFX can handle, I would strongly recommend looking at the OpenGL Capabilities Database and ensure that your card meets the requirements of TF2.

For example, if you examine a log file and see glEntryPoints NOT FOUND messages, search for your card and then the function name and you will be able to see if it has ever been supported under OpenGL.

TF2: Bad mouse focus in windowed mode when moving cursor out of the window

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#318
@Rua posted at 2012-12-23T14:59:40Z:

This is a minor issue, but still a bit annoying at times.

In windowed mode, when moving the cursor out of the window, the mouse focus stays on whatever it was on last. If you then move the mouse back into the window and click, it clicks on wherever the mouse was before it left the window.

For example, put another window next to the quit button, then move the mouse over the quit button, and then move it from there out of the TF2 window onto the other one. The quit button stays highlighted. When you move the mouse back into the TF2 window in a completely different place and click, it will quit the game.

Engine "Parallel" is Dangerously unstable (ALL)

A few years ago, the 'parallel' convars were turned on by default for servers.

sv_parallel_packentities 1
sv_parallel_sendsnapshot 1

Both of these convars, at their default values, will cause crashes due to not locking properly and allowing the gamethread to succeed the other two threads. If you miss no frames, they're a nice performance improvement. However, if your server were to suddenly start missing frames (an overloaded CPU/core), there's a high probability you will crash. The default response has typically been to just disable these options, but that isn't the greatest option. I was hoping this could be fixed, which would prevent many crashes.

Multiple Weapons should be supported in CS:S

Multiple weapons per slot are supported in a variety of old school (Half-Life) and modern day games. Something that's been missing for a while is the ability to enable clients to carry a variety of guns per slot. At the moment the game has supported this for quite sometime. However, I believe the client's .res file does not, which only allows changing to these guns via the console, or other not-client friendly methods.

Replay never merged from CS:S Beta (CS:S)

Replay was implemented in the CS:S beta, and was 'close' to completion. However, this was two years ago, and there haven't been any changes since. I was wondering if it would be possible for this functionality to be merged to the main branch of CS:S, so we can offer replay enabled servers as well.

TF2 Severe Input Lag

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#342
@Squidamatron posted at 2012-12-24T04:44:23Z:

More recently I'm finding that my mouse and keyboard lag. It's at a point where it becomes unplayable. Though, it does happen occasionally. At first I thought it was because I was running the game Windowed but full screen. Turns out that didn't matter at all after I switched it to Full Screen in game and experienced the same issues.

A bit more detail on what happens. If I were to move my mouse around in circles, the mouse would stop and pick up a few seconds later. The keyboard would do the same, but act as though it were tapped in the last direction I tapped after I get control back. There are times where it will act as though I'm still holding down Mouse1 at times as well.

I'm running Kernel 3.6.10-1 with the 12.11-beta11 ATI drivers. I've got a Q6600 and a 5870. AwesomeWM is my Window Manager and I'm using Arch. My mouse, if it needs mentioning, is a Razer Lachesis and this issue doesn't happen outside of the game [I've tested while the game is running]. While it's happening, I maintain over 100fps. Would Multi-Core Rendering have anything to do with it?

Any other information I need?

Health display is cut off (CS:S)

In the last CS:S sync it looks like the health wrap problem was fixed (which is great!). The only problem is the last digit is half cut off on most (if not all) displays. I was hoping the width could be increased so that we can remove our hint text printing the clients true health.

Steps to reproduce: Set m_iHealth to 1000.

"Game language" option's logic is inconsistent

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#294
@kunitsin posted at 2012-12-22T19:27:15Z:

On Windows, game language option (right click on game/Settings/Language/Select a language) controlled only the language used in audio files, but the text in this game is always displayed using Steam client's language setting (at least for Valve's games). So, if user selects English for TF2 and Russian for Steam client, voice acting in TF2 will be English, and text strings will be in Russian.
On Linux, game language option sets language for both audio and text.

Outbound voice chat not working when server has "sv_use_steam_voice 0"

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#261
@rio-steam posted at 2012-12-22T05:30:09Z:

I have already posted this issue in the beta forum a while ago now but thought it would be a good idea to post it in the bug tracker as well.

Outbound voice in game does not work when the server being played on is using "sv_use_steam_voice 0". No errors appear in either the console or command line.

Steps to reproduce this issue:

  • Open the console and enter in sv_use_steam_voice 0. This can be done either in a locally hosted game or in the main menu for TF2
  • Go to voice chat options and test microphone using the voice chat tester. Alternatively if in a match you can open up the console and enter in voice_loopback 1 to test the microphone.

-Switch between sv_use_steam_voice 0 and sv_use_steam_voice 1 via the console. Outbound voice works when 1 is set. Outbound voice stops working when 0 is set.

Could not find required OpenGL entry point 'glColorMaskIndexedEXT'!

@pbhj posted at 2012-12-21T21:35:33Z:

TF2, all 12GB, of it installed after 2 days of downloading. Doesn't run. Perhaps a simple test could have been made to see if the system supported it before the download? System should indicate the graphics card can't support the games somehow.

Anyway I get the error as in the title:
Could not find required OpenGL entry point 'glColorMaskIndexedEXT'! Either your video card is unsupported, or your OpenGL driver needs to be updated.

From elsewhere I'm led to believe that this entry point requires GL_EXT_draw_buffers2.

lspci outputs that my card is:
Nvidia 6100 nforce 405

This page, http://feedback.wildfiregames.com/report/opengl/feature/GL_EXT_draw_buffers2, suggests the particular extension can work on this card. I had the standard nvidia drivers, version 304, installed in my Kubuntu 12.10 (quantal) install but upgraded to experimental 304.48 without any improvement.

From http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/882966056532198187/ it looks like anyone with older nvidia is not going to fare well.

Reluctant now to install anything else - finding other free-to-play offerings for Linux that aren't large is not easy in the Steam interface.

sv_tags truncated (ALL)

Fletcher Dunn has requested on a number of occasions for servers to display their tags properly. However, for about about two years this has been capped at 127 characters, making the request impossible fulfill/abide by. sv_tags needs to be changed to something else, or the convar string limit needs to be raised significantly. Prior to this, when sv_tags overflowed, the tags would end up in the server's hostname, this has since been fixed. Now when the limit is reached, tags overwrite each other, which just leaves garbage for the last 30 or so characters (depending on overwriting tag length).

HudText missing from CS:S

In most other Source (1) based Games, HudText is present and can serve as a vital constant reminder of displaying data (Such as "You are the VIP"). This can serve many roles, and while Alfred shot down the implementation in 2008, I believe the community has passed the point where such a thing would be a shocker in games. I'm totally open to another way of printing data, but we need another way to display prompts carefully and thoughtfully to clients. Otherwise the mod community is going to continue to suffer, and confuse users who are new to the game.

Particle Stringtable is never cleared on map changes (ALL)

It appears that once you load a map that contains particles, those particles are loaded for the life of the server. After you cycle through enough maps, eventually the table will fill up, then you will be presented with the default error particle. A number of attempts have been made to work around this. The most successful one thus far is manually editing map particle files to stop them from including duplicate "default" particles, which seems to have some moderate success. However, this can only go so far, and eventually, this method too will fail.

Steps to reproduce: Own a server, have a bunch of different maps that use different particles, just keep changing the map to maps that use their own particles. Keep doing so until the table fills, then you'll see the error particle on all new maps that use particles.

TF2 fps drops when choosing another class

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#315
@dance posted at 2012-12-23T11:18:35Z:

Usually I have ~70 fps, but when choosing another class it drops to 15-20.
Steps to reproduce:

  • open class choosing window (fps drops to 15-20 and restores back to normal in a second or two)
  • move mouse over class icons, every time you highlight another class fps drops to 15-20 and restores back to normal in a second or two.

TF2: Huge, lasting drop in framerate

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#140
@Flippeh posted at 2012-12-20T17:08:11Z:

Occasionally, sometimes instantly on round start / game join, sometimes halfway into a round, my framerate drops from mostly (see issue #138) playable levels into unplayable 10 - 15 frames per second.

The game will stay that way until I force a reinitialization of the graphics by changing any advanced graphics setting (e.g. Motion Blur, Filtering) or completely restart the game (stuttering persists even in main menu resulting in delayed button clicks and hover states).

One thing I now know is that it's not an out of memory condition, TF2's memory consumption stayed the same pre- and post bug and was overall well below my total RAM (2.4 GiB usage, 8 GiB avail). It also is not connected to the 100%-CPU bug that was fixed yesterday, because it since happened again.

This bug makes the game pretty much unplayable for me, sadly.

Video Stresstest is broken (CS:S) (And missing From Linux!)

There was a check added for SetLocalAngles and "Bad" values at some point. In TF2, this occurred on 07/29/2011. This change resulted in the test_hardware.bsp map no longer functioning. You just stare straight at the floor during the stress test, it's quite dreadful. The old CS:S beta still supports this behavior, and the map works just as it did years ago.

This is missing from Linux, and would be a fine addition to the game.

Steam not reporting proper IP over TCP on Multi-Homed machines. (ALL)

For about a year now we've used a simple iptables rule (-A OUTPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 27017:27019 -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-port-unreachable) to force UDP connections to Steam on our server, just so we're listed on the master server. The initial TCP connection will succeed, and you will be listed on the master with the correct IP address. However, after some uptime, and Steam inevitably goes down, when SRCDS attempts a reconnection it's on a random IP address, and not the actual Server ip address. This results in bunk records being placed on the master, which isn't good for anybody. Fletcher distributed a modified Steam binary out a while ago that disabled this functionality, however I'd like to be able to use TCP to connect to Steam. I'm not a huge fan of UDP, we typically receive a lot of spoofed traffic.

Voice chat bugs out if the voice key is hit twice in succession and held (ALL)

If you press the voice key (or voice_enable bind), let go, then press it again, your client will believe you're still transmitting. However, no one else on the server can hear it, and the server believes you have stopped. This seems to only be present with Steam's voice (SILK, the default), Speex doesn't suffer from the same defect. This destroys the feature for most competitive play, and encourages the usage of 3rd party voip when it's not required.

Steps to reproduce: Press the Voice Key, let it go, press it again quickly. Have a peer in the server and ask if they can see/hear you talking.

The Backpack inventory in TF2 hangs/lags when changing pages.

This issue, from my testing, doesn't seem to be affecting Linux clients (And potentially not mac clients either), but on Windows each time you change pages on your Backpack in Team Fortress 2 there is a noticable delay between changing pages.

The issue is pretty easy to reproduce, simply change pages on the inventory in Team Fortress 2 to reproduce the issue.

Relevant system information:

Windows 8 (64-Bit)
Steam installed on a SSD(C:\Program Files (x86)), but TF2 is technically running on 2x2TB WD Black Edition through usage of symlinks, my setup predates the addition of install locations.

Edit: Maybe I spoke too soon, to be sure it wasn't a fluke i tried reinstalling TF2, but I was waiting for that download to finish, surely enough the issue seems to have disappeared, as well as a nasty error that had been spamming my console since a few updates ago

For now atleast you may just want to close this.

TF2: Jittery gameplay

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#159
@epitron posted at 2012-12-20T20:19:35Z:

I'm running TF2 on Arch Linux under XFCE4 (compositing disabled) and the latest NVidia drivers (310.19).

TF2 on Windows (with highest video quality settings) runs with a consistent 300fps.
TF2 on Linux (with the lowest video quality settings) runs between 10fps and 300fps.

The FPS seems to correlate to the complexity of the scene. It's very frustrating because whenever I see an enemy (and especially if they're close), the game locks up for a second. It's really hard to kill anyone! :)

Is there any diagnostic information I can give to help sort this out?

Team Fortress 2 doesn't run on Intel GPUs without GLSL 1.3 support

Issue transferred from ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#19
@cumulus007 posted at 2012-12-20T01:34:51Z:

While TF2 runs fine on Windows running on machines like mine (pre-HD integrated grahpics, e.g. the 4500mhd), the native Linux port fails to do anything more than to show a black screen, while the game loads and cycles through introduction screens and the main menu, with sound working perfectly fine.

The underlying issue seems to be lacking GLSL 1.3 support for said hardware. I cannot tell whether this is a software (Mesa) or a hardware problem; even under Windows, I get results of OpenGL 2.1 compliance at most. The game seems to be somehow less demanding in DirectX mode, or whatever reason Valve came up with.

In the game's log, several error messages related to failing shader compilation can be found. Numerous cases of this, and as shown in video, can be found in this Discussion thread: http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/6/846939071071956036/#p1

A filthy, not-so-much-working workaround was proposed by me, which merely forces the game engine to assume we're running it on a GLSL 1.3-compatible system. Of course, this is asking for trouble, and the little useful results can also be found in this thread.

"Workaround", forcing GLSL version to minimum required 1.3:

I'm on LinuxMint 13 with this config :

  • Processor : AMD FX4100 Black Edition
  • Motherboard : Gigebyte 990XA-UD3
  • Graphic Card : Gigabyte GT 630

Outdated SDK (ALL)

When OB was ported to Mac, Alfred said a compatible SDK would be released so we could compile our mods against it so we could too, add Mac support. However, as far as I'm aware, this never occurred. The last released SDK feels decades old, and mostly does not represent the current state of the engine. There are well maintained RE'd Plugin SDKs that allow server plugins to support current released games (huge thanks to AlliedMods). However, seeing as Linux has launched, I was hoping a current SDK would see a release so mod authors can add support for Linux (and hopefully Apple).
