We've made some updates to the user manual that might help. I suggest looking at the example in https://wntr.readthedocs.io/en/latest/morph.html#split-or-break-pipes. After breaking the pipe, you could add a leak with large area to each end of the broken pipe. There is also an example that adds base demand and demand pattern in https://wntr.readthedocs.io/en/latest/waternetworkmodel.html#modify-timeseries.

You can use the area of the pipe that breaks for thew broken pipe.

i have implemented the pipe split module, do i need to specify a base demand/demand profile for the new leakage node inserted at the middle of the original pipe?

You do not need to add base demand or a demand profile to the new node. You can add a leak to that node using the add_leak method, see https://wntr.readthedocs.io/en/stable/disaster_models.html#pipe-breaks-or-leaks for a small example.
