Great work.

It's definitely a lot more work than just using gson. My suggestion is to stick with gson for v1. This approach allows us to include the implementation as a compile time dependency.

With the javax approach it will make more sense to have the client-user to provide the implementation (as it often will be included by the JEE-container). In many situations this can be more confusing for the user and harder to make it "just work".

Agree. Initially we hope the Json parsing had become part of the JRE, but it turned out to be part of Java EE 7. Closing this issue, but leaving the branch for a while longer in case we want to perform the change at some later time.
