XR Interaction Toolkit Examples - Version 2.5.3

Introduction

This project provides examples that use Unity's XR Interaction Toolkit (XRI) to demonstrate its functionality with example assets and behaviors. The intention of this project is to provide a means for getting started with the features in the XR Interaction Toolkit package.

Note: If you are looking for the original XRI Examples project, that has been archived into two separate branches Classic 1.0 and Classic 2.2. Both of these branches still have both the AR and VR projects available.

Getting started

Requirements

The current version of the XRI Examples is compatible with the following versions of the Unity Editor:

  • 2021.3 and later

Downloading the project

  1. Clone or download this repository to a workspace on your drive
    1. Click the ⤓ Code button on this page to get the URL to clone with Git or click Download ZIP to get a copy of this repository that you can extract
  2. Open a project in Unity
    1. Download, install, and run Unity Hub

    4. Browse to folder where you downloaded a copy of this repository and click Select Folder
    5. Verify the project has been added as XR-Interaction-Toolkit-Examples, and click on it to open the project

General setup

The main example scene is located at Assets/XRI_Examples/Scenes/XRI_Examples_Main. This example scene is laid out as a ring with different stations along it. The first examples you will encounter are the simplest use-cases of XRI features. Behind each example is a doorway leading to advanced uses of each feature.

Use the simple examples when you need objects you can copy-and-paste, while leveraging the advanced examples when needing to achieve complex outcomes.

The XR Origin is located within the Complete Set Up prefab. This prefab contains everything needed for a fully functional user interaction with XRI. This includes the components needed for general input, interaction, and UI interaction.

Scripts, assets, and prefabs related to each feature or use case are located in the associated folder in Assets/XRI_Examples.

The following stations are available in the XRI Examples:

For a list of new features and deprecations, see XRI Examples Changelog.

For an overview of how the Input System is used in this example, see Input.

Sharing feedback

The XR Interaction Toolkit and Input forum is the best place to open discussions and ask questions. Please use the public roadmap to submit feature requests. If you encounter a bug, please use the Unity Bug Reporter in the Unity Editor, accessible via Help > Report a Bug. Include “XR Interaction Toolkit” in the title to help our team triage things appropriately!

xr-interaction-toolkit-examples's Issues

[AR] ARCore XR Plugin is not installed by default

This creates a lot of confusion, especially for beginners. Both ARCore and ARKit should "just work" out of the box on this sample repo.

Also, there should be a warning when using ARFoundation and building for Android without this present; right now you just get a black screen.

Force Select marked as internal, prevents using method to force selection of an item

I'm building a game where the selection of one thing needs to give you another e.g. selecting a quiver puts an arrow in your hand. The ForceSelect method in XRInteractionManager is a great way of doing this, but it is marked as "internal" not "public" and no public accessor has been made available. If there's an intended way of doing this please let me know, but if that could be made public that would be the easiest.

I can't grab objects after pausing/resuming the app in Oculus Quest

I've compiled WorldInteraction demo scene for Oculus Quest and it works well. I can grab XRGrabbables but after pressing the system button in Oculus Touch to pause the app and resuming it back, I stop being able to grab these objects.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Play WorldInteraction in Oculus Quest
  2. Grab an object
  3. Pause the app
  4. Resume the app
  5. Try grabbing objects again

Me and my colleague are having this issue. I'd like to know if this is a known problem.

Can't get example projects to run as expected

I can't seem to get the example projects to run as expected:

WorldInteractionDemo:

  • My player levitates 2 meters above the starting area
  • I can't teleport to anything. A blue ray, indicate that I should be able to teleport, but nothing happens regardless of what I push on the controllers

I am using an Oculus Rift S. All Oculus drivers are fully updated.
I have tried both Unity 2019.3.0f6 and 2019.3.6f1.
I already run the guardian setup, but that did nothing for the levitate issue.

[AR] Scale gestures get canceled when reaching min or max values

To reproduce:

  • tap to add a cube
  • tap to select the cube
  • two-finger scale it down (move fingers closer to each other - keep the fingers on screen)
  • move the fingers away from each other

Expected: cube scales up again
Actual: cube stays small, gesture needs to be restarted to have an effect

Same happens with scale up.

AR Scale Interactable, set default size

Hello! Is there a way to set the default size for the AR Scale Interactable?
Currently it seems to set as the max value. I'd prefer it to be set at a mid value, between min and max. So that the user can both scale up and down the object from the start. It also eases placement of the object as it is supposed to be scaled up quite drastically.

Ability to grab an object at its edge, rather than the center snapping

Most of the other VR libraries allow the user to 'grab' at the edge of an object (for example, a cube) and move and rotate it from there, rather than that cube snapping to the centre of the controller and rotating instantly.

Think a game of Jenga - you'd carefully grab at the edge of the block and pull it out; or even pulling one cube out from under another. That's currently not possible with this (otherwise pretty awesome) XR library, as far as I can tell. Unless I've missed something obvious?

I did see the ability to set a grab transform, but that's not really the same at all.

[AR] Error after deleting selected object

Deleting selected object in the AR-scene causes errors, which make placing of the new objects or selecting already existing objects impossible. There is no possibility to disable selection after deleting the object (what would probably fix "NullReferenceException").

Teleportation Custom Triggers

Hi there!
I am working on a game that uses the XR Interaction Toolkit.
I have implemented walk movement using a PlayerController, but haven't yet added a teleportation option for people who are susceptible to VR sickness. The reason for this is that I would like the teleportation to occur when pressing a custom button, for example, (A) on an Index or Oculus controller. I have used CommonUsages before and know that you can get button events, but how can I translate that into a teleportation trigger? Currently, the only options are OnSelectEnter/Exit and OnActivate/Deactivate. This really doesn't make sense for a game that uses the XRRayInteractor already for distance grabbing and UI interactions. Am I missing something? Or is there a better way to do this?
Any help or code snippets would be appreciated.

XR Toolkit Climbing System

There should be a climbing system implemented into the XR Toolkit. It could work like this - a grab interactable grabs a GameObject with a collider and climbing script. You then pull the controller down, which boosts you up. This could work for ladders, climbing walls, rock climbing, and more!

[AR]Error after deleting any placed InteractableObject

If you place a prefab with some of the InteractableScripts on it (Select, Translation, Scale,..) and you delete these Objects, e.g when you want to reset the AR scene, you are not able to place more objects because the InteractionManager seems to be still subscribed on the Object.

Feature request: Better control over raycast

When you use the raycast (XR Ray Interactor) the ray is always coming from the controller position and going Vector3.forward in local space of the controller. I don't see any option to customize this, maybe I'm missing it?

It would be nice to be able to set the starting point to be e.g. ControllerPosition + Vector3.forward * 0.05f and also to rotate the ray in any desired direction.

Depending on your game type you may want to adjust these settings. Even inside a single game (like Beat Saber) you can customize these settings to accommodate personal user preferences.

Maybe with the option to override relevant methods it could at least be scripted by developers per individual requirements.

XrDirectInteractor raising more than one Object

Hi

I just wrote down code that highlights objects that are interacted with Ray and Direct Interactors.
Problem is that onEnter is risen for multiple objects at once in DirectInteractor, which is kind of strange.
Is there any more complex logic that i can't understand?

I changed the code in method
public override void GetValidTargets(List<XRBaseInteractable> validTargets)
so it will rise events only for one object at once and it is working fine

float minDistance = float.MaxValue;
XRBaseInteractable minBaseInteractable = null;

// Calculate distance squared to interactor's attach transform and add to validTargets (which is sorted before returning)
foreach (var interactable in m_ValidTargets)
{
    m_InteractableDistanceSqrMap[interactable] = interactable.GetDistanceSqrToInteractor(this);
    if (m_InteractableDistanceSqrMap[interactable] < minDistance)
    {
        minDistance = m_InteractableDistanceSqrMap[interactable];
        minBaseInteractable = interactable;
    }
}
validTargets.Add(minBaseInteractable);

My question is are You interested in remarks like those and is it a good place to post those, since I'm making a lot of changes to your code and can contribute with few more.

If no it's understandable and I won't bother you any more:)

Jittery hands on Oculus Quest

I am trying XR interaction toolkit with Oculus Quest. No matter what setting I try I see a really jittery movement both for grab interactables and for game objects attached to the controllers. Example scenes behave the same way. Is this supposed to be like that?

How do I get if an object is grabbed?

How do I get if an object is currently being grabbed with an XR Grab Interactable, I need to turn the collider off when it's grabbed to fix a bug where you can grab an item and push yourself with it

[AR]Can't move placementInteractable from table to floor

  1. Scan a table and a floor
  2. place a cube on table
  3. tap to select the cube
  4. drag the cube to floor

The cube's positionY is same as table, can't place to the floor plane.
Runnning on iPhone11, build with Unity 2019 3.3f , XR interaction toolkit is 0.9.3.

Try to work with XR Interaction Toolkit

Version:1.0.0-pre.1

Unity Version:2019.4.17

AR placement Interaction Works Well But AR Selection Interaction and other scale,rotate,zoom dosn't work

I also imported XR Plugin manager and Checked the appropriate Platforms

And getting a Warning message:

No input data on 2020/2021?

Using TryGetFeatureValue or the XR Interaction Debugger I only get positional data from the controllers, no tirgger/button data.

Window Mixed Reality VR not tracking

Hi people,
I wanted to give the Action-based XR Rig a try in my project. In Play mode I only have a frozen picture.
Then I downloaded this project and have the same problem in the WorlInteractionDemo scene. DeprecatedWorldInteractionDemo on the other hand works fine with the WMR.

I even tried adding bindings especially for the WMR in the Main Camera of the XR Rig and in the Input Actions window.
This was also unsuccessful.

Do you have an idea how I can fix this problem?

DoProcess in XRUIInputModule fails to remove RegisteredInteractables with interactable == null

I have this issue reproduced using photon, but I guess there are other possibilities that I am not aware of. (EDIT: it is most likely when we disable the parent object of interaction before destroying it)
DoProcess in XRUIInputModule fails to remove RegisteredInteractables properly in case of using PhotonNetwork.Destroy and PhotonNetwork.Instantiate in sequence.

I have a scene which joins photon and spawns a player with xr rig and 2 rayinteractors. I press on UI item which does Photon.Destroy on current player and Photon.Instantiate another prefab with xr rig and 1 rayinteractor + 1 direct interactor.

When it runs through DoProcess() in XRUIInputModule.cs it executes else, even though registeredInteractable.interactable is null. It should instead remove the interactable from list.

Because of that I keep getting this error for the interactable that is not removed properly.

'BasePoseProvider' does not contain a definition for 'TryGetPoseFromProvider' and no accessible extension method 'TryGetPoseFromProvider' accepting a first argument of type 'BasePoseProvider' could be found

I installed the Oculus XR plugin, XRInteraction toolkit and XR Managemeent plugins. After installing them I am getting this error -
Library\PackageCache\[email protected]\Runtime\Interaction\Controllers\XRController.cs(283,35): error CS1061: 'BasePoseProvider' does not contain a definition for 'TryGetPoseFromProvider' and no accessible extension method 'TryGetPoseFromProvider' accepting a first argument of type 'BasePoseProvider' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
How do I resolve this error?

Vive XR - Cant seem to get data when touching the touchpad.

My specific issue is that I am trying to setup a radial menu, but am unable to get the 2DVector info from the input because either I do not fully understand how to setup and use the input action system or my coding is bad (which could be likely as well). Would it be possible to create a prefab with a Serialized Public 2D Vector reporting said data (just visually in the script vs debug.log(xxx) so that it is easier to reverse engineer this for my purposes?

Additionally, I think it would be advantageous to create a script based system to activate if a system is detected (example - HTC Vive is detected - enable HTC VIVE Left and Right controller Scripts) or (Oculus Rift Detected - enable Rift Left and Right Controllers). Also i saw the InputAction chart and struggled there. Maybe a tutorial on setting up each button? I've yet to find a resource that covers it in the detail that I've needed to proceed. My apologies if this is not the right place for this comment, but I feel if yall are developing the code for this, maybe it will help other people too.

Thumbstick axis missing

Example:

  • creating a training solution for vehicles, or heavy equipment and requiring fine control via thumb sticks as grabable object tracking is not reliable enough for fine motor movement.

I am unable to find documentation supporting axis to multiple thumbsticks, and unable to find the support for thumbsticks in the packages itself.

XRInteractionManager.ForceSelect does not work properly

I'm developing a AR application (using ARGestureInteractor in scene) and I'm using the XR Toolkit in version 1.0.0-pre.1 with Unity 2019.4 LTS.

In my use case I need to select an object via a UI Button click and not by directly tapping the object, for this I'm using XRInteractionManager.ForceSelect.
But when using XRInteractionManager.ForceSelect I can see that the ARSelectionInteractable selected flag is set true and also the event ARSelectionInteractable.onSelectEntered is invoked, but the selectionVisualization does not get activated and furthermore the gestures for moving, scaling and rotation also do not work.

Doing a physical finger tap on the object works, but that is not what I need in my scenario.

Some initial config issues

In the World Interaction Demo scene the UI line renderer is not working and teleport leaves the user several meters in the air

In the World Interaction scene the Vive controller does not register

Enabling Oculus Quest's Hand Tracking in Unity XR Interaction Toolkit?

XRCameraRig is supposed to replace OVRCameraRig but OVRCameraRig is the only place where you can set hand tracking support ("Hands only" or "Controllers and hands"). That option is not available on XRRig so even including hands the app is recognized by Oculus Quest as a "controllers only" app.

  • How can I use hands in a UnityXR app?
  • If it's not possible, will it be possible in the future?

AR scene, not working in editor?

Is the ARinteraction scene supposed to work in the editor?
I am clicking around and nothing happens.

Definetely using 2019.3, could be because AR_FOUNDATION_PRESENT is false for some reason? I do have ARFoundation 3.1

feature request: offer as packages

Could we get this offered via Package Manager, so its easier to import into an existing project? perhaps as links (one for VR and one for AR) in the XR Interaction Toolkit package (like Polybrush does, for example)

[AR] Gui doesn't block Raycasts

This happens while in AR mode and a Plane is already detected. If the Screen is overlayed with a GUI, the CUI doesn't block the raycast and so on Button-Press an Object is placed.

Unity-Version: 2019.3.0f3 with XR Interaction Toolkit

XR Ray Interactor doesn't collide with Default-based geo

The ray interactor seems to be going through all the geometry I have with (mesh) colliders in the Default layer. Override Line Length is unchecked in XR Interactor Line Visual.

I expect the end of the line to collide with non-Ignore Raycast layers, especially Default and not pass through it. The gradient would also adjust accordingly, giving the user a visual indication the line has shortened in case they can't see whether or not the line is passing through.

Unity 2019.3.0f5, XRIT 0.9.2

Interactable Events Snaps Closed When Value Changed

When putting events into the Interactable Events categories on the XR Grab Interactable, the Interactable Events dropdown closes up whenever something is changed, meaning it takes many scrolls and clicks to completely fill the variables you need.
Unity version 2019.3.13f1 Personal

[VR] XRayInteractor stops working when using object that extends XBaseInteractable

I created a couple of object that have a script which extends XBaseInteractable, they are correctly detected from the XRayInteractor but after a while the line and haptic feedback are update only for one of those objects.

BugLaser

Am I missing something extending the interface or it is a bug?

[EDIT]
The problem is that if you disable the laser while you are holding an object somehow the laser remember that it was holding that object and the only way to get it work with other ones is to let the laser enabled and release the object.

Support for Oculus Quest

I built the VR project for Oculus Quest, and built it and ran it on the device. The scene geometry appeared too small, and there were some issues with the the raycast Line Renderers showing all the time, rather than just when a button was pressed.

This was on a Mac, running Unity 2019.3.0f3.

This could certainly have been something I was doing (or had configured) wrong, although I have built other projects for the Quest successfully. Note that I have also ran the project on a Windows box from the editor without issue.

[AR] Fluent interaction/multitouch not possible with the current design of Interactables

At the core of the current design seems to be the assumption that objects need to be "selected first, then manipulated".

That's not necessarily desired behaviour, and there doesn't seem to be a way to configure this. Not even "dragging an object around" works without first selecting it.

To reproduce: build & run ARInteraction scene, create two cubes by tapping, try moving them around.
Expected: can move cubes around by directly dragging on them
Actual: can only move cubes around after first selecting them by single-tap. Directly dragging on a different cube than the selected one does nothing.

Single placement of AR Interactable when using AR Placement Interactable

Using AR Placement Interactable, is there a means to add just one single AR Interactable prefab in the scene and not keeping adding more?

Primary use case for this is for apps where the user puts down one object in AR and wants to move/rotate it easily without additional clicks causing additions of extra prefabs into the scene through touch events registered by AR Placement Interactable.

[VR] Destroying an Interactable Object throws MissingReferenceException

Problem:
When destroying an interactable object while the interactor is still inside the object, a MissingReferenceException is thrown:

Reproduction:
Attach a XRGrabInteractable component and the following script to a GameObject:

After releasing the grab (selectExit), the object is destroyed but the exception is thrown.

Quickfix:
In order to quickly fix this problem, one could change the following in XRBaseInteractable.cs:
