unitary.fund's Issues

Pages without some formatting

Some blog pages have lost some type formatting, including:

  • spaces after paragraphs
  • size of fonts and whether they are bold

Some examples below:

Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 8 45 23

Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 8 45 13

Add database on micro-grants

It may be nice to collect some data on the funded micro-grant projects.

Example data points could be, for projects that have a GH repository:

  • Github data, such as repository stars, forks, "Used by" (eventually), releases (eventually), contributors, lines of code or commits. This could be included with GH REST API tools, which can be more easily interviewed with python libraries.
  • pypi or conda-forge downloads, which can be obtained from pypinfo and Anaconda package data
  • information on the use of documentation, continuous integration

Applying also other non-software type of projects, there could still be information on impact such as:

  • events held;
  • research papers or other research products;
  • technology transfer indicators.

Add link for high school students resources

Link - https://quantumready.thinkific.com/

Description - This course will introduce the essential concepts used in quantum computing and explain how it's different than regular computing. We will explore what quantum computers can (and can't) do right now, and guide you through running first code on a real quantum computer. This is a beginner level course, so no linear algebra or tough equations will be used. That being said, you will NOT have enough background to go get a job after this course! You'll be able to understand what quantum computing is, and know where to go if you want to learn more.

Reason - You have a lot of great resources for students that have the math background. This course is more for people asking "wait, what even is quantum computing?" to explain what it is and why it matters

Add list of Unitary Fund team papers

Add list of papers from Unitary Fund team members. The papers from the projects are scattered in the grants section, but maybe also those could be collected.

Add Vincent to Team

@vprusso I just realized that we haven't added you and a link to our homepage under team. What link would you like it to point to?

Improvements to the Mitiq page

I noticed that there is no link I could find to the GitHub repo for Mitiq from this page: https://unitary.fund/mitiq.html which seems like an oversite.

Also, the sidebar changes on this page and you can only get back to the rest of the site by clicking on the logo in the top left, whereas any other page on the site has the full menu on the top right.

Add keyword "distributed" to QRack's description

I think it would be worthwhile to mention the keyword distributed in the Qrack's description. I could find the word "distributed" in their README.md

For people looking out from distributed quantum computing simulator framework under the UnitaryFund projects page this would be helpful. Going into each simulator's repo and looking whether it is distributed takes more effort. Maybe this will also help Google to index QRack with keywords "distributed", "quantum simulator" keywords even better.

Tidy up and clarify research page

  • quantum fly trap paper should go under the microgrant section
  • unify the UF staff research or make the division between the two sections about UF staff research vs Unitary Labs more clear

Gathering up beginner resources

If I want to create a page listing all the resources for quantum computing and information, would it be preferred to have it as a blogpost or create a separate page/tab on the unitary fund website ?

I am aware there are webpages that already do this but I feel they don't list the reasons as to why that resource was important to be listed for beginners. I am thinking of separating the discussion as hamiltonian simulation model, quantum circuit model, quantum algortihms, quantum error correction, quantum information and so on (textbook + papers).

Improve accessibility

Google's Lighthouse tool (available in chrome devtools) can perform automated accessibility (a11y) testing. It found two problems with our index.html:

problem image
"Background and foreground colors do not have a sufficient contrast ratio" in the newsletter signup button Screen Shot 2022-05-23 at 11 10 47 AM
"Links do not have a discernible name" for the icons we use for socials (in both the navigation menu and footer) Screen Shot 2022-05-23 at 11 11 54 AM

Lighthouse also suggests the following ten things to manually check:

  • The page has a logical tab order
  • Interactive controls are keyboard focusable
  • Interactive elements indicate their purpose and state
  • The user's focus is directed to new content added to the page
  • User focus is not accidentally trapped in a region
  • Custom controls have associated labels
  • Custom controls have ARIA roles
  • Visual order on the page follows DOM order
  • Offscreen content is hidden from assistive technology
  • HTML5 landmark elements are used to improve navigation

Fixing the two main errors should be straightforward, but will need to be fixed on many pages since code is duplicated across many files. These kind of problems is presumably why @crazy4pi314 started porting the site to 11ty.1

Some of these require a decent understanding of a11y and the ability to use a screen reader. cc @WrathfulSpatula since you may know of other a11y things to check for/improve.

I think this is an important issue as UF's mission is to create an ecosystem that benefits the most people.

Footnotes

  1. Is this something we'd still like to do? ↩

Update details about IBM Q dedicated access

Awardees can ask dedicated access to IBM Q devices through IBM researchers' program. We can better reflect this online:

  • Consider updating the typeform with a link.
  • Write a blog post about this with details. Discuss at UF whether to include details about other providers.
  • Update the FAQ webpage, to include the link and some blurb, and possibly the link to the blog post.

Add "donate" page

could add a donate page that:

  • could be in the homepage menu or linked from homepage
  • add an embedded form to donate via paypal beyond the button
  • include some micro-grant recipients quotes?

Decide format for information on collaborators

@willzeng, in order to timely add the collaborators information, we should decide what information to ask them in order to display it on the website. I think that, given the minimalistic style of the website, a simple list of names could be added, and more elaborate information could be presented in a blog post, similarly to the presentation of the technical team, where bio brief could be present (if other collaborators are later added, their bio brief could be added in a later blog post).
For the main index page:
"

Collaborators

Jane Doe,John Doe.
"

Add RSS feed to grants

Consider adding an RSS feed to the grants page (and to the blog post). Maybe some other sort of more modern API can be considered too, to dispatch updates beyond the website.

Write blog post on mitiq

Proposed structure:

  • Mention Unitary Labs research activity and team.
  • Introduce mitiq and put a link to Mitiq/mitiq on github
  • Mention examples in guide
  • Mention events that will be updated on the mitiq wiki
  • Include signup form

Add link or icon to social media accounts

Add link or icon to social media accounts: such as Twitter, the Youtube channel, discord, twitch. This could be in the menu bar or at the bottom of (all) pages, e.g. next to copyright message.

Add page on affiliated projects

QuTiP is now an affiliated project of Unitary Fund. A page or label could be added about it, also for prospective projects, with a Typeform application form ( similar to the micro-grants) or some other contact information, as well as a list of features provided from being supported by UF, such as:

  • exclusive access to expert legal counsel (IP issues, licenses, governance).
  • governance support
  • tailored programs such as mentorship programs
  • interaction with an experts community and its events
  • help from advisors

Add prominent information about Unitary Hack

I wonder where it's best to add information about Unitary Hack

  • We could temporarily add it to the main menu, in a color that makes it evident,
  • and/or together with a link in the home page
  • and eventually with a blog post about it? This could be a simple brief post, with links also to the discord channels and maybe mentioning the supporters. Alternatively, the blog post could be done after the event, with stats and information about engagement.

cc @willzeng @crazy4pi314.

Link directly to recipients on grants page

I was referring someone who won a microgrant and could only link the page https://unitary.fund/grants.html. From this it's a bit hard to find their name because there are a lot of names now (a good thing!). But it would be nice to be able to do something like

https://unitary.fund/grants.html#this-grant-recipient

which scrolls to them. (There probably is a name for this in html but I don't know it.)

Add page on publications

It could be divided into:

  • publications on microgrant projects by awardees. These are already referenced, sparse in the Grants page.
  • publications by Unitary Labs on Mitiq.

Additionally, it could include:

  • publications by Unitary Labs tech staff members.
  • publications citing or using Mitiq (If there is a way to embed bibliometrics automatically, a plus. E.g., Google scholar rectangle, automatically updated).

Add slide presentations

It may be nice to add a slide presentation on unitary fund activities and on the funded micro-grant projects. A slide deck could be drafted and the awardees could contribute to improve the description of their own project (one, two slides at most.)
