Errors when packaging with dpkg-deb

When running dpkg-deb --build unetbootin-debian I receive a few errors. (Ubuntu 20.10)

  1. dpkg-deb: error: failed to open package info file 'unetbootin-debian//DEBIAN/control' for reading: No such file or directory as the directory debian should be uppercase.
  2. dpkg-deb: error: parsing file 'unetbootin-debian//DEBIAN/control' near line 10: missing 'Package' field as there are empty lines in the control file, when removing them it works.

There are a few more issues what makes me question that I'm doing something wrong.

Do I need to use dpkg-deb at all? The old releases in this repo are just an archive of the repo without any binary... I'm a bit confused here. I got dpkg-deb --build running with a few changes but I'm not sure if that's the intention of this repo. Probably its best I push an MR to show what I changed.

What do I want to achieve:

  1. Understand how the packaging in this repo works
  2. Automate the packaging in the GitHub CI/CD
  3. Remove the file duplicates from the unetbootin repo by including it as a git submodule
