⚠️ WARNING ⚠️

It is NOT recommended to use prebuilt OpenCore configurations. They might not work with the exact hardware of your computer, may have features enabled that you don't want, may be outdated, and are harder to diagnose. This configuration is meant to be used as a guide to help you create your own OpenCore configuration for this ThinkCentre, but it can be used as is, only at your own risk.

Directions

Follow the steps below by going to the links provided and following the directions listed. If a step is labeled with a *, that means it's optional but extremely recommended. If a step is labeled with **, that means it's optional and not required.

Step # Link/Directions
0.25** Grab a supported Broadcom WiFi card from here, a supported Intel WiFi card (kext not included) from here, or a supported USB WiFi adapter (kext not included) from here if you want WiFi support.
0.5 For ThinkCentre M83 Tiny and M93p users, follow this guide to increase the chances of this configuration working correctly.
1 Creating the USB (Do not move the EFI folder. ProperTree is not needed.)
2 Move the "EFI" folder from this repository to the "EFI" partition on macOS, to the root of your USB drive on Windows, or to the "OPENCORE" partition on Linux. Make sure to move the whole folder itself and not just the files inside the folder.
3 Modify your BIOS settings according to this document. Skip "VT-d" if you do not see it in your BIOS.
4 Installation Process (Skip "Double checking your work". Check "OpenCore Multiboot Guide" if you want to multiboot.)
5 For Ventura and Sonoma users, use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to get graphics acceleration and WiFi connectivity.
6* Moving OpenCore from USB to macOS Drive (Skip the "Legacy" part at the bottom)
7* Fixing iMessage and other services with OpenCore (This is extremely recommended even if you don't use iServices because otherwise, you will have a generic serial number, which isn't a great idea.)
8** For Big Sur and Monterey users, modify the OpenCore configuration to improve security.

Updating OpenCore/macOS

Updating OpenCore with a newer version of this configuration

If you want to update OpenCore with a newer version of this configuration, just download the new EFI folder, mount the EFI partition, and copy the folder to the partition. Note, if you've made any changes to the configuration, make sure to remember them or save them somewhere because any changes made will be overwritten.

Updating OpenCore/macOS manually

If you want to update OpenCore manually, you can follow this guide (harder to follow, but recommended and tells you how to update macOS), or follow this guide (easier to follow, but not recommended.) If you want to update macOS 13 Ventura or macOS 14 Sonoma, follow this guide here.

Known Issues

OpenCore Legacy Patcher Issues

Because macOS 13 Ventura and macOS 14 Sonoma do not officially support the hardware featured in this ThinkCentre, we have to use a tool called "OpenCore Legacy Patcher" to apply patches that allow us to use Ventura and Sonoma normally. Sadly, these patches do have some minor issues. To check the issues that affect this ThinkCentre, check this link and look for "Haswell" in "Known Issues". As mentioned before, these bugs are quite minor and will not affect most people.

No VGA Output

Due to macOS not officially supporting VGA, you will not be able to output the macOS user interface via the VGA port featured on the ThinkCentre. At the moment, this is currently impossible to fix.

Monterey 12.3+ crashes during setup on the HD4400

With the HD4400, Monterey 12.3 or newer crashes during the "Migration Assistant" part of the setup. Sometimes, you can get past the screen, but it'll freeze later. This issue can only be fixed by upgrading your CPU to one with an HD4600 iGPU. It is unknown if this happens in Ventura or Sonoma.

HD4400 Glitching and Freezing

The HD4400 has many issues in macOS. For example, some icons may be missing (image below), some random freezes may happen, icons may get replaced, and possibly more. In newer versions of macOS, this can make the system almost unusable. This is impossible to fix at the moment, and the only thing you can do is upgrade your CPU to one with an HD4600 iGPU.

m73-tiny-opencore's Issues

An issue about displaying 4k resolution

Which do you have: an M73 Tiny or an M93p?:
M93p

Do your specifications match the ones shown in the README.md? (not including the USB WiFi adapter):
There are differences, my cpu is i5-4690T, I have not installed wireless network card and bluetooth

If your specifications do not match, what are your specifications?:
My cpu is i5-4690T, I have not installed wireless network card and bluetooth

What version of OS X/macOS are you using?:
The version I am using is macOS Monterey 12.6.5

What is your issue?:
Although I can happily experience macOS on a 4k TV, the state of the screen is very unstable: first the screen will flicker, then the screen will go black without any video output, and finally it will return to normal, repeating non-stop. If I drop the resolution to 1080p, the screen becomes normal.

Steps to reproduce your issue:
Adjust the resolution to 4k 30hz

Other supplementary information: The video output interface of my computer is a dp interface, and the computer and the TV are connected by a dp-to-hdmi cable. It is currently confirmed that this set of equipment can normally display 4k 30hz images under windows10.

DP display sleep wake and black screen

Which do you have: an M73 Tiny or an M93p?: M73

Chime sound

Hello, I have a Lenovo m93p tiny with Monterey, everything is working for me, but I don't know how to work chime sound. Do you know how can I add it? Thanks

Would this work on a M83 Tiny?

Which do you have: an M73 Tiny or an M93p?:
Neither, M83 Tiny.

Do your specifications match the ones shown in the README.md? (not including the USB WiFi adapter):
Very close...

If your specifications do not match, what are your specifications?:
Intel Core i5-4590T @ 2.00Ghz
2x4GB (8GB) of DDR3-1600

Full M83 Tiny specs

What version of OS X/macOS are you using?:
I am planning on installing Monterey.

What is your issue?:
As the title says, would this work on a M83 Tiny? Specs are similar and it's from the same era as the M73 and M93 so I don't see why this wouldn't work. But can you see any "gotchas" I might run into (other than the wifi not working and no VGA)? Thanks!

Implement Legacy Mac OS X Support

This config is not meant to support legacy versions of Mac OS X, like Mountain Lion - High Sierra. Although El Capitan - High Sierra should work in the main config, Mountain Lion - Yosemite don't. To fix this, I will be creating a "legacy" branch which will contain an unmaintained config for legacy OS X/macOS versions. It will primarily be aimed towards Mountain Lion - Yosemite, but can also be used if you have trouble getting El Capitan - High Sierra working.
First, I am going to test to see if El Capitan works on the normal config. I will still also make sure the legacy config works with it, in the case that the main config stops.

SUPPOT.APPLE.COM/MAC/STARTUP

Which do you have: an M73 Tiny or an M93p?: M73

Do your specifications match the ones shown in the README.md? (not including the USB WiFi adapter): YES

If your specifications do not match, what are your specifications?:

What version of OS X/macOS are you using?: VENTURA 13.0

What is your issue?: Hello, thank you very much for providing the latest efi, but I seem to have encountered a problem. My machine is the nuc M73, which is the same thing as Lenovo M73. After installing ventura and using your efi, SUPPOT.APPLE.COM/mAC/STARTUP appears. How can I solve this problem?

Steps to reproduce your issue:

hide everything except default icon on boot

no issue, just a suggestion:
I added this to my plist, to hide everything except the default boot icon (for the others, just press space to unhide):

Misc > Security > ScanPolicy = 17760515: Hide EFI from OC boot menu (this is the OC default and had previously been set to 0 which shows all).

took this from this page, there's an other option there, but as I was just sawing the efi icon, that line solved my issue

macOS 13 Ventura Support

The current version of this configuration does not currently work with macOS 13 Ventura. But, I have gotten Ventura to boot on this ThinkCentre, and you can test it yourself with the "ventura" branch! Currently, beta graphics acceleration is supplied by the latest commit of OpenCore Legacy Patcher. A guide on how to get graphics acceleration working is in the "ventura" branch, but please do note, graphics acceleration is in beta stages. Although I have been using it as my daily for the past couple of months, and have had almost no issues, it is still possible for bugs to appear. Because of this reason, you should wait for the "main" branch of this configuration to support Ventura before using it on this ThinkCentre daily.

Ventura support has now been merged into main! It is now stable enough to be used as a daily.

macOS 14 Sonoma Support

With the very recent announcement of macOS 14 Sonoma, it's time to start working on getting it to run on this ThinkCentre! Please note that this can be a long process, or could possibly never happen. In order to get an experimental version of the configuration for macOS 14 Sonoma, check the "sonoma" branch.

All updates towards getting Sonoma working will be uploaded as comments below.
