It looks like this library is not compatible with serverless 3.X.

Any deployment ends with the following error:

The CloudFormation template is invalid: Template error: variable names in Fn::Sub syntax must contain only alphanumeric characters, underscores, periods, and colons

This is because serverless after the version 2.48.0 changed how variables are being resolved ( serverless/serverless#9612 )

It looks like any variable resolution like in the following example:

"RoleArn": {
          "Fn::Sub": "arn:aws:iam::${AWS::AccountId}:role/socless-${{self:provider.stage}}-states-execution"
        },

does not work anymore.

As far as I understand any variables should be enclosed using single brace ( https://www.serverless.com/framework/docs/providers/aws/guide/variables#referencing-environment-variables ) and variableSyntax option for aws provider is no longer supported by serverless.
