What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. There is just no sound
2.
3.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expected to hear something, but the computer is completely mute. (By the
way, I checked everything I could in sound preferences)
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bits). My vaio is the VPCF111FX.
Please provide any additional information below.
There is no sound in videos, music, system sounds. It`s the more silent
notebook I ever had. I`m not really sure but I think that I could hear
something with Ubuntu 9.10 32-bits.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
Plug-in or remove the AC adaptor and see if power manager reacts to it. It
won't.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Power manager should be informed that ac adaptor has been (un-) plugged.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Kubuntu 10.10 with KDE 4.6
Please provide any additional information below.
I solved the problem by creating an acpi script, that listens for battery
events (not ac), and then executes:
dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower \
/org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/line_power_AC \
org.freedesktop.UPower.Device.Refresh

I have assumed that my HDD was protected by an accelerometer on my laptop. I
recently viewed the FireFox 4.0 demos ( http://demos.mozilla.org ) and saw that
they had support for detecting device positioning (ie; it knows when you tilt
your laptop), but that it was failing to detect movement.
I have since been trying to determine the following:
-Does my device actually have a method of detecting movement?
--Is it an accelerometer that can be accessed, or is it built into the HDD?
--If it's an accelerometer, how can I ensure it's being used to protect my HDD
and how can I access the device within my system?
I tried installing HDAPS, but it tells me it is unable to find a device. The
HDAPS package states it's for IBM/Apple machines, though.
Is there anything else I can do?

My laptop, a Vaio VPCF11J1E, has a PM55 motherboard and when I try to configure
the hardware sensors, the system don't find any sensor and I think that this
issue influence the temperature reached by the hardware.
Whith Windows there are not problems for the sensors, 1 for each processor, 1
for the Hd and 1 for the Gpu.
I found this but it seems to be dead:

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.I have the latest Nvidia driver installed (195.36.24). I am sure that
this issue only started after the installation of that driver.
2.I lock my laptop (Ctrl-Alt-L) then press the display off button.
3.Then try and log in again, e.g. move mouse to get the screensaver
password dialog.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to be able to see the screen properly.
Instead when trying to log back in the display is very dull, with one
side slightly brighter. I can log in (i.e. no freeze), but the display
doesn't go back to the set brightness. Even on the desktop it's mostly
dull with one side slightly brigher.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I have a VPCF117HG.
Using Lucid Lynx, with latest Nvidia driver installed.
Please provide any additional information below.
I have tried this with desktop effects turned on and off. The result is
the same.

The sound card is a Realtek ALC275. It is currently bound to the alc269
settings in the realtek codec, which suffices for output, but fails to get
the pin configuration correct for any any input. The current "capture"
switch gives noise input from an unknown source. Toggling some mute switches
in [http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/HDA_Analyzer HDA Analyzer]
enables support for the line input, but the built-in digital microphone
cannot be enabled by any such tinkering.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Plug in an external monitor (VGA or HDMI)
2. Use sudo nvidia-settings to try and detect the monitor
3.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Doesn't pick up a monitor
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Ubuntu 10.04, Vaio F CTO
Please provide any additional information below.
If you install the Nvidia drivers while an external monitor is plugged in the
external monitor will work, but not the built in screen.

This is not really a serious problem, but I would really like it if when I'm
using my external monitor and I close the lid of the laptop, if the internal
LCD screen would automatically disable so I wouldn't need to worry about
windows or my cursor moving to the closed screen. It works that way in W7.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I'm using VPCF11JFX with Kernel 2.6.35 on ubuntu 10.10
Please provide any additional information below.
I tried changing the power settings to have the laptop screen go blank upon lid
closure, but it still counts as an active screen. It seems much of the display
detection is not very robust, as unplugging the HDMI cable does not
automatically disable the external monitor registering as an active screen
either.
I'm a pretty big linux noob, so there's probably something really dumb I'm not
doing... Sorry....

- nvidia (after active it and reboot i had to insert the 2 lines in xorg.conf
and it came back on the 1920*1080 resolution)
- sound speaker after downloading the package recommended in the issue for the
mic, and configure and make and make install
- bluetooth after update

When starting ubuntu on battery power I hear high pitch noise going
somewhere from under keyboard. I think it is the same kind of noise that
several users reported to hear in Win7.
The issue can be easily triggered when even changing brightness of screen
to anything else than maximum brightness (in battery or power supply mode)
And when changing display brightness back to maximum, the high pitch noise
is gone.
There was some crazy solution in Win7 to change some settings for microphone.
I saw this issue on official ubuntu kernel and I didn't applied yet the
solution to get microphone working
I did apply the changes required to get brightness up&down working as
described in the wiki

Thanks for a brill site. I would not be using my VPCF11Z1E as much as I do now
if I could not overcome the issues resolved here.
I am currently on 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx. I have resolved the following
issues with the help of this site:
1) NVIDIA Issues - Setting up X11 with NVIDIA's driver for the Vaio's new
display using an EDID file
2) Audio drivers - No sound in Ubuntu Alsa Drivers
3) Back Light fix
What I would like is a status of 'Issues' for 10.10. I would like to upgrade
but I have stable box at present. What issues were resolved by 10.10. Will I
still need ALL of the patches! Do they still work.
Is there a help page for this?
I am still disappointed to have to have to patch. Has the new version of Ubuntu
fixed any issues.
I thought Canonical did hardware testing! Do these issues ever get resolved!
I know it is the fault of Sony for using proprietary hardware but it has been
long time now.
Am I expecting too much?

If, by chance, any user comes here before they choose to upgrade their laptop,
I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT upgrading. I typically download the newest version
of Ubuntu at about the third Alpha release, so I'm used to the errors and bugs
that come along with it. 10.10 has by far given me the most trouble I think
I've ever had.
It messed up my display, and will not even load it or recognize that there is
an error. The previous work-around that I think just about everyone was using
will NOT fix this. I've tried. Just to be able to properly boot into Ubuntu
using x I had to boot into the safe mode and uninstall the Nvidia drivers.
Also, closing the laptop lid will no longer send you computer into standby, it
instead chooses to turn it off completely.
I'm not trying to run here and complain, I'm aware that these will more than
likely be fixed soon, I'm just trying to warn others of the potential dangers
of updating!

UPEK confirms that even though Sony laptops include a 0483:2016 scanner (which
would otherwise be supported by upekts), the Sony version has a custom firmware
designed to prevent any non-Sony software interacting with the device.
Unfortunately they are successful and fprint, ThinkFinger and UPEK's own Linux
drivers do not work with the fingerprint scanners in Sony laptops.

BUT what I thought is that (correct me if im wrong) the original UPEK firmware
could be extracter from an oiginal 0483:2016 scanner, and then it could be
loaded into the 0483:2016 with the sony firmware

The NVIDIA driver does not restore the display when switching to console,
and sometimes crashes and fades to white. When using the 195.xx series of
drivers, the entire display locks up randomly (the solution is to use
190.xx).
- Screen restoration when going back to console
- White screen of death
- Random crashes with 195.xx series

list any NVidia sound deviced, only ALC275's.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. attempt to open a .avi file
2. mplayer will automatically search for plugins
3. none will be found; only audio will play
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
audio and video should play, instead only audio plays
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
newest version of mplayer (totem is also installed) Ubuntu 10.04 x64
Please provide any additional information below.
I cannot find any information to get these to work and it's driving me
crazy. I've been running Ubuntu for years and have set it up on many
machines and have always been able to get support for .avi files no
problem! My desktop computer is compatible with them. When mplayer searches
for the plugins it simply returns: No packages with the requested plugins
found.
I have done:
w64codecs
mencoder
medibuntu repositories
gstreamer plugins
updated mplayer
gotten the ubuntu restricted drivers
looked ALL over the Internet and tried just about any fix I could find. I
even installed the DivX SDK because some site said that might get it to work.
** It is worth noting that I did install VLC and the videos will play
correctly with that, although I personally prefer mplayer by far over VLC,
as well as want to figure out why something simple won't work.
***I'm also aware this isn't so much a Vaio issue, although, as previously
stated, I've tried just about everything else I could possibly find on the
Internet and have used Ubuntu for a long time and still cannot find a
solution. Any help is welcome!
