inva-occurrences's Issues

Update

Issues #1 to #3 have been solved in the 1.5 Version. I took the liberty to close the issues.

Review repo

Now that the datasets are published, a review of README and structure is needed to bring this repo in line with checklist repo. If this repo is not used in any way for the publication, it should be removed.

datasetName and datasetID

For datasetName, we usually provide the name of the published dataset on GBIF, in this case this would be Exotic plant occurrences in Wallonia. However, I understand why you choose to put the information about the original five datasets under datasetName. Besides from the field source, I see no other option then to put this information under datasetName. source, however, is a deprecated term in the occurrence core. So there are two options here:

  1. Use the TrIAS approach and use Exotic plant occurrences in Wallonia as the datasetName. The references to the original dataset could be put in the metadata.

  2. Keep the five original datasets under datasetName

I would go for option one, especially to keep it in line with the other TrIAS datasets, but this depends on how visible you want the original datasetnames to be in the download.

In line with this, datasetID should in case 1 refer to the doi of the dataset as it is published on GBIF (in this case https://doi.org/10.15468/cqfrx0), and not to a single number.

What to do with Darwin_core.xls

@mcoupremanne what is the file Darwin_core.xls?

  • It seems to be a Darwin Core mapping of the source data, and thus not source data itself
  • It seems to be cut of at 65.536 rows (a limitation of excel)
  • It is quite big to put under version control

I would therefore argue not to put this file in this repository. @mcoupremanne, I assume you have a SQL or other script to map the source data to Darwin Core, so a Darwin Core view can always be recreated by you?

establishmentMeans

At this point, the information contained in establishmentMeans is Excotic. This is a typo and should be exotic. Additonally, exotic is suggested as a synonym for introduced as a vocabulary. We use the latter as the term for alien species in TrIAS. So I suggest to use introduced instead of exotic

Delay publication

Still waiting for a last very formal check from colleagues, for a while now. This is the only thing that prevents the publication (trying to hurry colleagues - all is already in our IPT, only need the green light to press the publication button).

So I leave the respective files here so you can have a view @LienReyserhove , @damianooldoni , @peterdesmet . By this time, I'm working on our DBs for the first update with increased publishable content. Very sorry for bad predictions of the delays. (End of June still ok to have first update published).

PS. dataset ID will be the one attributed by GBIF.
Best regards

Field "year" empty: missing temporal information

I am working on occurrence data of some plants (Impatiens glandulifera, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides among others) in order to test workflow of TrIAS occurrence indicators. I found some occurrence data from dataset Exotic plant occurrences in Wallonia without temporal information (field year). Here below a count table:

species n
Impatiens glandulifera 28
Hydrocotyle ranunculoides 11

I checked others columns like eventDate or eventTime but these fields are empty as well. I didn't check the occurrences of other plants, but I presume similar situations occur. I find it a little strange, as occurrences without temporal information are not such useful.
