I'm currently thinking of four layers:

• Behavioural: describing behaviour from the user's perspective (e.g. focus_item, edit_item, ...)
• Structural: describe how things should be presented (e.g. center_item, show_aside)
• Positioning: roughly lay out items at intended coordinates
• Physics: determine actual positioning using force model, e.g. to prevent overlaps

Simplest solution seems to be allowing HTML in input, but that meteor might prevent that.

Content in displayed items should update when changed in the database.
