facebook-open-academy-fluentd-2015's Issues

Lab 1: RubyGems

As I mentioned on the mailing list after the hackathon, I will assign some small labs so that you can self-teach some key concept in software development and open source collaboration.

The first topic is Ruby Gems. A Gem is a unit of Ruby code, often libraries and frameworks that you wish to share with others. Gem is specific to Ruby, but most programming languages have something like Gem (the jargon is "packaging system"). Here is a non-exhaustive list:

language packaging system
ruby gem
perl cpan
python pip
java maven

This assignment is meant to get you up to speed on RubyGems.

  1. Read the Rubygems guide. Definitely read the following articles:
  2. Create and publish your own RubyGems. The above reading should get you all the information you need. If you get stuck, feel free to ask questions, but I also encourage you to google (which is an important skill in software development) The name of your Gem can be anything.

Deliverable

Please comment on this issue with the link to your RubyGem. Here is an example for Fluentd.

The due date is Feb 5, 2015 at 6PM ET.
