birdbandinglab's Issues

Identify positive and negative search terms for lit search

Create a list of positive and negative search terms for using the mining packages (e.g., xdd, publink, fulltext; see Issue 1).

Table 1. List of phrases and phrase combinations for identifying candidate literature. Phrases separated by commas indicate an "OR" query. Phrases in separate columns indicate an "AND" query.

Terma 1 Term 2 Term 3 Grouped termb Signc Notes
Bird Banding Lab +
Bird Banding Lab agencies +
BBL agencies +
bird telemetry regions +

bird band regions +
bird band regions +
bbl/day - often used in petroleum-relevant publications.
bbl per day - often used in petroleum-relevant publications.

Note: Terms 1, 2, 3 are assumed to be included as "AND" variables; phrases within each Term (1,2,3) are assumed exact phrases (e.g., "exact phrase"); terms within the group names (see b) are assumed to be grouped as an "AND" phrase, where phrases within the group are separated by "OR".
a a term with multiple words is assumed to be an exact phrase
b repeated terms summarised here, and are fully described in Table 2, below. Terms within groups are assumed to be included as "or" terms
c + = a term typically associated with intended usage; - a term typically used to exclude information

Table 2. List of grouped terms as referred to in Table 1. Words or phrases within each group name are assumed to be separated by "OR", where exact phrases are separated by a comma.

Grouped term Exact phrases Notes
regions <<list all us and mexican states, central american states/regions, canadian provinces>>
journals <> if one wishes to restrict the search to bird-relevant journals
fws <<US Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USFWS, FWS>>
usgs US Geological Survey, U.S. Geological Survey, USGS, Geological Survey
cws Canadian Wildlife Service
agencies usgs+fws+cws...

APIs for automated literature reviews

Create a running list of relevant search engines/archives/indexes, whether they have APIs, what API access requirements entail, and information regarding booleans (e.g., full text, abstract only, wildcards allows).

Source API (y/n) Access Software Full text Notes
Google Scholar y Open, free Scholar (R), Scholarly Regular boolean defaults to full text (when available?) Advantage of picking up more grey literature than other engines
Elsevier (Scopus) y Not open, USGS has limited access yes(?) Can get scopus key via USGS library
Web of Science y Not open, USGS has no access with current subscription ($$$$$) no Forget about it
CrossRef no
DataCite
