easy-devbox

easy-devbox is an installer for devbox and direnv, designed to run on bash on systems with apt-get. it installs and configures devbox and direnv such that you are able to simply run devbox generate direnv in any project and it will "Just Work".

Caution

this script provides direnv access to evaluate all .envrc files in ~/Documents/**/ instantly and whenever they change. this is a security risk and you should only run the script if you're confident everything you store in there and may store in there in the future is safe. the script is very simple; if you need to disable this behavior you can edit the script yourself, or even just copy and paste it into your shell directly (there's actually only 6 necessary lines) and remove the lines that whitelist ~/Documents/**/.

usage

first, run:

bash <(curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tom-ricci/easy-devbox/master/script.sh)

then, just restart your shell. that's it!

Need a new name

easy-devbox was great until feature creep set in. It's not going to be just a script for much longer, it should have a real name. I've been sitting on xumix.dev for a while now, maybe I can scrap the plan to rename octobox and use it for this instead?

Wrap devbox

To support more complex package management, devbox commands should be wrapped in a new CLI. There should be:

  • An install command
  • An uninstall command
  • An init/import command

Support partial installations of dependencies

The installer should support having partially/fully installed direnv or devbox already (or even the script itself, once we have custom commands).

Docs should also be updated to add directions for adding this project to projects that already rely on direnv or devbox or nix.

Support specific install location

Packages should be installed directly in the project (like python venv) so users can find them easily if necessary. Relies on a custom install command, see #1.
