taskbar-groups's Issues

[Feature Request] Solution improvements

Hi, nice idea for project. For simple navigation and because it's true case, please create main solution and move into configuration and client projects. What do you think?

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

[Feature Request] When launched from a shortcut anywhere, make menu appear next to it?

I noticed that Taskbar Groups makes its menu appear when launched from a shortcut. When this shortcut is pinned to the taskbar, the menu pops up next to the shortcut on the taskbar.

I was wondering if it would be possible to extend this function, so that the menu appears next to any Taskbar Groups shortcut anywhere? e.g. If it had a function to create desktop shortcuts to its groups, the user opens the shortcut on the desktop, and the popup menu appears next to it (rather than just next to the taskbar).

This would make Taskbar Groups a fully-fledged replacement for the likes of Stardock Fences, or allow the user to approximate the Playstation 3 XMB on their desktop (a longtime dream of mine).

Arguments for app

It would be nice to be able to add arguments to an app. E.g "autoruns -e"

[Bug] Initial release has no EXE icon

Sorry to open 3 issues one after the other. I noticed that the EXE icon is a generic one. Would it be possible to add an icon to it?

If you like, I can make one (probably even add it using Resource Hacker).

Instant crash

When I click on "Add taskbar group", or if I just wait 30 seconds, then the app crashes without any errors.

[Bug] Exception when changing Icon

I added a new group (without defining an icon) and pinned it to the taskbar.
Then I edited the group and added an icon.
When saving the group an exceoption was raised:

[Feature Request] Add Start Menu search

Hello,
I found that it was challenging to locate the shortuct file for each app, since they all are quite elusive and hard to find. (Also, %appdata% is hidden by default in the explorer and there is no way to enter a path into the file picker window) Since all start menu entries are stored in %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\, would it be possible to add a search field to search apps in the Start Menu, instead of having to dig around and find where each app lives? (A path-entry field in the file picker would also be nice, but I'm not sure how feasible that would be).
Thanks!

[Feature Request] Allow Parameters

I want add some shortcuts for some windows features, like:

  • Windows Updates (command: C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:windowsupdate)
  • Windows Store (command: C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-windows-store:)
  • Hyper-V-Manager (command: C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\virtmgmt.msc)

These shortcuts are not accepted by TaskbarGroups, so please allow parameters.

Edit:
I know I can create lnk files for these special applications, but it should be usable and comfortable for all users.
So please allow parameters.

[Feature Request] Customization syncing alongside StartIsBack

Hello and happy new year, in advance.

First of all I want to thank you for providing this tool, it's awesome and extremely useful for productivity. I can't go without anymore.

As for my request, this is a bit of an "out there" one: I would personally love it if "taskbar groups" was able to sync a certain amount of settings, is this something that would be possible?

It has some amazing customization features that customize and alter the task bar specifically, such as coloring, opacity, blur behind types (clear, blur, acrylic and acrylic+), taskbar icon spacing, centering, segmenting transparency and full on independent theming among many, many other great things. It is very neat.

All its settings are stored in the registry, which I have attached a picture of here:
regedit_OGJ94x25S4

I am aware that it may not be possible to do everything and anything startisback is doing, but a few of the settings such as opacity and/or color could be very nice as I saw in #24 .

Regardless if this is added or not, I want to thank you so much for considering my request and developing this awesome tool.

[Feature Request] Easier way to pin to taskbar (Usability)

Although I am a computer expert (hopefully), it took me some time to pin my group to the taskbar.
Reason: I did not read the text in the application window (who reads text these days).

So maybe you increase the usability (ease of use) and make pinning groups more user friendly:

  1. Add a button "Pin to Taskbar" (when a group is pinned label the button "Unpin from taskbar".
I am sure you already tried this and this is not possible (otherwise you would not have chosen the way you do it).

  2. If 1) is not possible, add a button that shows a message box telling the user that the folder with the groups will be opened and that he just need to right click...
When Users confirm the message box, open the folder.
This is a little "guided workflow".

With these suggestions the usability will be much better.

[Feature Request] Allow .ico and .exe files for shortcut icon

When you choose an icon for the group, you can only use image files. I think it would be a good idea to allow you to choose a program .exe and this program would take the icon from it.
Also, I think that you should be able to use .ico icon files and Windows' built-in .dll icons

Missing features on group creation screen

Hi

I don't have the same window like on main page for documentation

Missing dark light custom modes and opacity feature although I'm running last release 0.14 ?

Thanks for help

[Feature Request] Support for Windows Store apps

The file selector does not appear to include shortcuts to Windows Store apps, which appear to be generated as special shortcut files. For example, I have a shortcut to the Spotify app from the Windows Store on my desktop, but it does not appear in the file selection dialog.

Being able to add these would be great!

[Bug] Unable to open shortcut

In the recent release that added top status bar support, I can no longer open the created shortcut despite taking the same steps to create the group as in the last release.

The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Bug Selecting multiple shortcouts

In version 0.2 when you select several shortcouts and one of them is a windows app shortcout and try to add them the program does strange things, sometimes it adds them as a subgroup but when you are editing the group and you select the subgroup it fails showing only one icon and throwing an exception.
PS: I love your work

[Feature Request] Add a way to edit groups

It would be nice if there was a way to edit groups if you want to add a newly installed program that would fit in that group or if you missed a program that you wanted to add so you wouldn't have to delete the group every time.

[Note to others: You can always edit the ObjectData.xml to add and remove programs]

can't add steam games shortcut

hi, first thanks for your work!

when i try to add a steam game shortcut to a new group i receive a "Catastrophic failure" error.

the URI form the steam games is something like : steam://rungameid/239350 (the only part that changes is the number)

How to use?

This may sound really stupid but can I just ask, how do you use this?

{Feature Request] Allow editing groups

Right now, you are unable to edit already-made groups, you have to delete and remake a group if you want to add another program to it.

EDIT: nvm, I saw this on the to-do list already

[Feature Request] Adding it to the Microsoft Store

If there is no problem for you, it would be nice to install the application in Microsoft Store. It can be updated automatically and can be a little support for you and your application. (For example, you can sell it for like 0.99 cents[and people can download from github or ms store, their choice], it is cheap and many people can get it with regional pricing)

Official python Idle is not launching

I tried launching python IDLE from this tool and it does not work. But python console successfully launched from it.

[Feature Request] Add proper version information

I am helping at a security tool called VulnDetect (it detects what applications you have installed and warns you if there are known vulnerabilities).
For VulnDetect I also programmed a little tool, that extracts the version information stored in applications.
Screenshsot: https://vulndetect.org/topic/260/toolbox-for-vulndetect

If I extract the version info from TaskbarGroups, then I get:

File name and path: D:\PortableApps\PortableApps\_TaskbarGroups\TaskbarGroups.exe
Product Name: main
Internal Name: TaskbarGroups.exe
Original Filename: TaskbarGroups.exe

File Description: main
Company:
Legal Copyright: Copyright © 2020
Legal Trademarks:
Comments:

File Version String: 1.0.0.0
File Version: 1.0.0.0
Product Version String: 1.0.0.0
Product Version: 1.0.0.0

The version number is totally wrong, it should be 0.1.4.
Also the Product Name should be altered (to TaskbarGroups).
The other fields in the second block like File Description and Company) should also be filled.

Reason

With the filled version information I can add TaskbarGroups to the VulnDetect database.
And also other update managers (like SUMo) benefit from the correct version info.

[Missing feature] Ability to specify working directory and cmdline arguments

Programs that are influenced by their initial working directory cannot be run by Taskbar Groups.
Same thing with command-line arguments.

E.g. would need to be able to specify:

    <ProgramShortcut>
      <FilePath>D:\tools\OBS-Studio-portable-x64\bin\64bit\obs64.exe</FilePath>
      <WorkingDir>D:\tools\OBS-Studio-portable-x64\bin\64bit</WorkingDir>
      <Arguments>
          <Argument>--portable</Argument>
          <Argument>--verbose</Argument>
          <Argument>--profile</Argument>
          <Argument>myProfile</Argument>
      </Arguments>
    </ProgramShortcut>

Thanks a keep up the good work!

[Feature-Request] Options to set background-color

It would be nice to have 3 options to choose:

  1. choose the color yourself (color-picker)
  2. Take the windows accent color
  3. Take the windows theme color (dark/light)

The one I would appreciate most, is the first one.

Suggestion: Version tags, and use GitHub releases for binaries?

I saw your release on Reddit, and am very impressed with the software so far!

I was wondering, though, would it be possible for you to use version tags and release the binaries via GitHub releases? It would make updates easier, and separate the source code from generated content. I myself am a rookie at GitHub, but I've found it's not too difficult to use tags and releases (I use Fork to help me with git).

[Feature Request] Allow setting icon manually when using shortcut/link files (or whenever, I suppose)

Hey there,
I went to try and set Discord as one of the items in my group, but it looks like if you try to use a shortcut link, it shows up as seen below. I used a shortcut as that was what the typical taskbar button ends up being due to the arguments being passed.

C:\Users\mosthated\AppData\Local\DiscordCanary\Update.exe --processStart DiscordCanary.exe

It would be super useful to be able to specify an icon manually in this case.

Thanks,
-MH

There is no .exe file

I have downloaded the zip file several times, it does not have any .exe file. I do not think I am doing something wrong

[Feature Request] Editable starting paths?

Set starting directory to Start Menu folder?

I was really happy to find that it supported adding shortcut.lnk files, as well as EXEs.

Currently, when you click "Add new shortcut", it opens to C:\. Would it be be better if, by default, it opened to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu (Global Start Menu shortcut folder) or %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu (Per-user Start Menu shortcuts)? Theoretically, every program installed on the PC should have a shortcut in one of those folders (I'm not sure which is most used, though), and it would make adding programs a bit quicker and easier.

EDIT: or just make the default directory configurable?

Unhandled Exception when not run as admin

Hi,

After copying the App to the Program Files folder, and running it (user is Domain User and a Local Admin) no UAC is requested, so the lack of permissions for saving a group is unhandled and the following error is generated.

[Feature Request] Child groups feature

As i understand, here is no child groups, but also i see you guys developing it really intense, especially @PikeNote, so.. i have an idea which would be really useful in this software, add child groups and something like marking(sorry for my bad english), for now i building my new windows theme&i.e set of programs, etc.. so i searched for this software and thank you god, found this, but i think i can even replace my start menu with it, for me start menu was more like launcher and i searching for replace, and i think with this software i can make just 1 group that contains all of my programs i need, but this would be much much organized if here would be child groups with maybe some separators in, i.e split programs in some areas vertically or|and horizontaly.. hope you get me, thanks for your time, hope you consider this at least, because for me that's important. BUT anyways, thank you for this software and all of this stuff you doing. Have a great day.

Problems launching Hyper-V-Manager

I coded in Lazarus (Delphi) a small launcher, where I start multiple apps (also multiple apps with one button click).
Then I read about Taskbar Groups so I decided to use this tool instead of my launcher.

In my launcher I also start the Hyper-V-Manager in Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit Version 20H2 (Build 19042.685) via
'C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmc.exe' 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\virtmgmt.msc'

When I add this command to Taskbar Groups and start it, then I get the following error:

Anything you can do here?

[Feature Request] Grid Layout for icons in New Group window

Would it be possible to implement a grid layout in the New Group window?

Advantages:

  • Creating a group will now let you see how the final popup will look
  • GUI Simplification: "Width" and all those "move up/down" arrows can be deprecated, as group width/height is implicit from the number of items positioned in the X and Y directions on the grid. Positioning arrows no longer needed, drag/drop icons into new places on grid.
  • Deprecate delete buttons to context menu or a small top-right X next to an icon?
