open-source-project's Introduction

open-source-project

This repository contains the source code and report for the INT301CA3 project, which focuses on using open source software to enhance the security of a Windows operating system.

Objective

The objective of this project is to demonstrate the use of open source software to identify and address security vulnerabilities in a Windows operating system. The project utilizes OpenVAS software to scan the system for missing security updates and free system information tools to gather information about the hardware and software installed on the system.

Description

The project consists of two main components:

  • Source code for the OpenVAS scan and system information gathering
  • Report detailing the results of the analysis and providing recommendations for addressing any security vulnerabilities identified during the scan

Scope

The scope of the project is limited to the use of OpenVAS software and free system information tools to enhance the security of a Windows operating system. The project does not provide an exhaustive analysis of all possible security vulnerabilities, and it is not a substitute for professional security services.

Usage

To use the OpenVAS scan and system information gathering code provided in this repository, follow these steps:

  • Install OpenVAS software on your system (instructions can be found on the OpenVAS website)
  • Download the source code from this repository
  • Open a terminal or command prompt and navigate to the directory containing the source code
  • Run the OpenVAS scan script and provide the necessary parameters (e.g., IP address of the system to be scanned)
  • Run the system information gathering script to gather information about the hardware and software installed on the system

Note: The scripts provided in this repository are for educational purposes only and should not be used on systems without the owner's permission.

Report

The report provided in this repository details the results of the OpenVAS scan and system information gathering. The report provides recommendations for addressing any security vulnerabilities identified during the scan and should be used as a guide for improving the security of a Windows operating system.
