This aligns nicely with a conversation Matt and I had recently. I see this, #51, and #34 all being merged either into one toggle map or featured concurrently.

Just gonna take a minute to celebrate @LisaKirsch-DellMed’s first GitHub issue! 🙌🙌

Now, onto the issue, I think this is a great idea for map. What I’m working through on my end related to the maps is what are the different variables we want to feature in a toggle. This obviously is a compelling case, but in theory the number of things that get highlighted by county can be infinite. That, however, isn’t practical. So we’d want to be selective about the ones that get featured and maybe even establish some criteria that helps guide why something gets included in the toggle versus other data points.

Why I feel like case growth is compelling is because:

  • It’s a kind of signal that helps lead to more focused questions a) why are things suddenly getting worse in County X or b) what is County Y doing to have such a drastic slowing of growth.
  • It’s available and robust enough to visualize at the county level, which can’t always be said for other points.

I don’t know if that’s the right criteria, but I do think it’s what came to mind for this indicator. Curious what others think.

We've asked about getting more granular data tied to specific outbreaks (i.e., nursing home, prison, meatpacking plant), but haven't made progress on that with DSHS just yet -- though the request was favorably received. Until we have access to DSHS data, we may have to rely on NYTimes. @mrworthington , is their data in a format that we can integrate it?
