aptik's Issues

RC Clone

THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE, AS GITHUB SUGGESTS ABOUT ALL POSTS. Aptik restored a number of user installed apps today. One is RClone. It xfers/syncs files between this computer and a cloud storage account. When I tried to restore /Desktop via RClone, which has previously had /Desktop sent to it as storage in the cloud, RClone balked and wants a it's config and other info back. If Aptik took it, it didn't restore it. I get confused. I don't know what Aptik does or doesn't do.

packages-list empty

I use Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3.

Command aptik --list-installed-user results in 0 packages. Impossible.
Even in installed.list there are no user-packages.

How can I install this in Manjaro?

Hi, I am a long time aptik user in ubuntu, and have just switched to Manjaro... and I cant figure out how to install it... can you tell me clearly how I can install this in manjaro? I really need it . Thanks.

Aptik-GTK unresolved dependency

Hello,

I tried to install "aptik-gtk-v18.5.1-amd64.deb" (via GDebi) on Linux Mint 17.3 Mate. I got an error "unresolved dependency" libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 (>=2.31.2).

Does anybody have an idea what I have to do to be able to install Aptik-GTK?

Thank you for your help

Boffo2018

thanks + scheduling

hi, am using this on KDE Neon and just wanted to say it works really well! (i'm a new Linux user, so it's easy to understand as well :p)
thanks for developing!
also wanted to ask if you've considered adding a scheduler for regular backups, i think that would be a nice addition.

How to save the terminal output ? [Ubuntu 18.10]

Hi,

Is there any way to save the terminal output at the end of the restore process ?
'Command | tee' doesn't work here and copy/paste not available

Thanks in advance

Aptik-gtk v.18.8
Ubuntu 18.10

No crontab causes errors

Having no crontabs is normal and fine, so this shouldn't throw errors:

...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backup: Scheduled Tasks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
no crontab for myuser
E: Error (myuser) $basepath/cron/files/myuser.crontab
no crontab for root
E: Error (root) $basepath/cron/files/myuser.crontab
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...
E: Backup completed with errors

I've verified that the issue is occuring on multiple machines all running Ubuntu 16.04

Aptik restores out of date packages? Maybe.

Yesterday, I did a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04 to bare silicon. I did a stock install, asking for the proprietary packages to be installed at install-time. Then I ran the Aptik restore. Then I ran the deja-dup restore on my /home data. The Aptik backup, from which the restore was created was made about 2 months ago.

Today, I wanted to play an audio .amr. Ubuntu's video player came onscreen, ran the plugin finder and reported that the needed plugin has a red exclamation point next to the candidate to be installed button. (small round button). I quit that app, ran apt-get update then install ubuntu-restricted-extras. That returned a message about unmet dependencies for the gstream packages. When I ran apt-get install --fix-broken, the terminal shows nothing done.

Has aptik overwritten new packages?
Does it check for newer packages?
Can Aptik selectively uninstall the gstreamer (restricted-extras) or how do I resolve this?

Backup of config files in /etc and manually compiled apps

Hello! Many apps have config files somewhere deep within /etc directory (like snapper). Are such config files backed up as well?

How are backed applications, that are downloaded from github to /home/user directory and then manually compiled?

Thanks for answer, Jan

Unable to locate package aptik for Xubuntu 19.04

Describe the bug
When adding the PPA for Ubuntu/Xubuntu it adds the distrubution as "disco". I don't think the repo supports disco so it won't install aptik or aptik-gtk.

To Reproduce
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:teejee2008/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install aptik aptik-gtk

It will then say aptik & aptik-gtk could not be located

System:

  • Linux Distribution Name and Version: Xubuntu 19.04
  • XFCE

Workaround:
Modify the first line of /etc/apt/sources.list.d/teejee2008-ppa-disco.list
And replace disco with cosmic for the distribution
sudo apt update
sudo apt install aptik aptik-gtk
Everything should install fine now.

Application launcher disappeared in Ubuntu 16.04

I've been using Aptik for the past 2 years on Ubuntu 16, running it monthly. All of a sudden, the application launcher registry disappeared... that is, I am no longer able to search for 'Aptik' in the Unity launcher and find/launch the app. I do still have the command line option, so the software is still installed. I tried removing it and reinstalling it with apt, but still no luck. I am not sure what system backup broke this. I keep Ubuntu up to date, and I did notice an Aptik update within the last month, but didn't try running the application immediately after that.

This seems to have affected all of the various machines on which I have Aptik installed (all running Ubuntu 16.04). I just now noticed that the Application launcher is not available on any of them.

Is there any suggestion for how to go about launching the GUI from the command line, or resolving this issue otherwise?

Exclude dropbox-folders from backup

Hi,
Using aptik for the first time, so maybe I'm overlooking something :)

When I run the program for a backup of the home-folder, a backup of dropbox (temporary) folders is also included:

  • /home//Dropbox/.dropbox.cache
  • /home/gertjanscholten/.dropbox
  • /home/gertjanscholten/.dropbox-dist

The latter is logic to include as it is the dropbox client. However, the first seems to create an infinite loop as it tries to copy a folder which is updated as dropbox syncs. The second contains the local dropbox database which is recreated in case of a new installation.

Would it be possible to add the first to to a default exclusion list?

Cheers, Gertjan

No Aptik-GTK for 14.04

Hi there,

I'm on Linux Mint 17.3. There is a version of Aptik for 14.04 in the repo, but not Aptik-GTK. I can't install the 16.04 version of the GTK frontend and can't resolve the dependencies. Could we get a build of Aptik-GTK for 14.04 added to the PPA pretty please? If not, what version of Aptik do I need to roll back to in order to regain the UI? Ironically, Aptik did not back up its own .deb, so I don't have an archive from the last working version available.

Thank you!

Deleting Mount Entries

Assuming using a USB flash/thumb drive as the APTIK install for all it does, in what location will I find /mounts to delete crypttab? Copy of User Manual below. I'm a computer illiterate (obvs).

Mount Entries
Backup
Usage: aptik --backup-mounts
Following actions are executed for backup:

Entries in /etc/fstab and /etc/crypttab are saved to backup folder <basepath>/mounts . Entries are saved individually as <mount-point>.fstab and <dev-name>.crypttab. You can delete files for any mount entries that you do not wish to restore.

AUR package does not build - Needs Vala dependency updated

Describe the bug
Does not build in AUR package, maintainer says it needs to be updated to latest Vala.

To Reproduce
Try to build AUR package

Expected behavior
It should build.

System:

  • Linux Distribution Name and Version: Arch Linux with latest Kernel 5.0
  • Desktop: KDE
  • Application Version: Latest 18.8-3

Hi!
I want to try Aptik as i sounds like the tool i searched for since i moved to Linux last year.
Sadly the AUR package does not build.
The maintainer of the AUR package wrote that Vala needs to be updated to the latest version.
As i am still a Noob in the Linux world, i dont know if the Updating of Vala needs to be done by the AUR maintainer, or upstream/here. So i thought i would post here in case this is not known.
If this needs to be done not upstream but by the AUR maintainer, sorry for the missunderstanding!
Greetings

EDIT: Here the link to the AUR Package with all further information:

why no --force option for manjaro/arch?

Hi! This is a huge issue.Where is the --force option?

like packan -S --force packagename ?

Thanks if I am missing something. All my restores dont work due to preexisting files from broken installs. I want to --force and I cant figure out how.

Somewhat confusing authentication system

Upon running aptik, the main window appears and then, after - immediately after - that, an authentication window pops-up, asking for authentication for . . /bin/bash.

It would be better if an authentication window appeared before the main window, and for that authentication window to say, somewhere, that it is asking for permissions for aptik.

sh: 1: Syntax error Unterminated quoted string

when i try to backup the icons and themes i get the below.

sh: 1: Syntax error Unterminated quoted string

open aptik
tick backup
tick expert
go down the list and backup each item. everything backs up perfectly except for icons and themes.

Expected behavior
not to get
sh: 1: Syntax error Unterminated quoted string

If applicable, add screenshots to help explain your problem.

System:

  • Linux mint cinnamon 19.1 tesa 64 bit]
  • aptik 18.8

now if i create a folder on the desktop and use aptik the same way to backup to it i don't have this problem. syntex screams file system issue from past experience in windows, but i find that very unlikely since i have tones of files and programs on my backup partition and none of them are giving me a issue. i was using that location without issue and one day just started getting that issue.

UI problems

  1. One looks in vain for a 'go' or 'backup' option, until one realises one must click 'backup' in the left pane.

More serious, perhaps, is

  1. In the 'backup' window/pane/thing, one heading is called 'select items'. 'Select items' has the grammatical form of an imperative; am I being asked to selected some items? Or is what is meant 'selected items'? And, either way, how do 'settings' - 'settings' being the title of the left column - come in? Also - and let's give this its own number -

  2. how do the 'icons' mentioned in the left column relate to the 'icon packages' mentioned in the right column?

Perhaps English is not your first language, but these textual problems do make it hard to understand how to use your tool.

Also, 4) it would be helpful were the words 'include' and 'exclude' to be italicised (on the 'backup' page, I mean).

Also, 5) is it by design that the program switches to terminal mode when I run the backup? Perhaps a general problem - one that conributes to other, more specific problems - is that the exact function of the leftmost column - the one that says 'General / Backup / Terminal' - is unclear. Are those options different stages one must go through? Or are they pages of settings? Something else?

EDIT: 6) I cannot determine how to exclude the cache from the backup.

Cannot Complete A Full Aptik Backup In Mint Cinnamon

Describe the bug
i am actually not sure what cause the issue, but i cannot do a proper aptik backup. i looked for away to save the output to file so i can post it but was unable to do so.

Cannot restore from backup

I am unable to restore items from a backup. Suppose I'm trying to restore only themes. My backup directory looks as follows:

Home Folder archive file far too large

Hello. I am attempting to backup my installation of Mint 18.3 Cinnamon using Aptik-GTK with the one-click option. All the backup seems to be successful apart from my home/ folder. The home partition is about 74 GB but Aptik tries to archive it to a much larger file and finally halts due to lack of disk space. The same thing happens if I try an individual backup of the home folder rather than the one-click choice, it simply runs out of space.
I have attached a copy of the terminal output which shows the archived file to be 245 GB!
Any suggestions very welcome, thank you.

Abandoned project ?

Looks like this project has been abandoned or in any case has not been maintained for several months.
Pity... was promising

Neither the manual nor the program make it clear what happens when one backup overwrites another

Describe the bug
Neither the manual nor the program make it clear what happens when one backup overwrites another.

Expected behavior
It should be clear what happens when one backup overwrites another, i.e. when, if one makes a backup (say, a full backup)to a location, and then runs another backup (say, again, a full one) to that same location (as one might do by making use, via cron, of aptik's admirable scheduling features). What does happen?

System:

  • Linux Distribution Name and Version: [e.g. Ubuntu 16.04] Mint 19.1
  • Desktop [e.g. MATE, XFCE] Cinnamon
  • Application Version [e.g. v18.8] 18.8

I apologise if in fact somewhere the information in question is provided.

Restored a default Gnome

Describe the bug
The restoration restored a default Gnome - no settings were kept. Like the position of close and minimize buttons on windows, extensions' settings, and so forth. Why could that be?

System:

  • Manjaro
  • Gnome

GUI: pressing 'backup' does nothing

I've selected a folder for backup (that's what 'Backup path' refers to, right - the destination path?) and pressed 'backup' and nothing seems to happen.
