alienfx-tools's Issues

Latest version made my power button go black

since the latest gui version you posted I have had a issue with my power button. It just wont light up.
additionally the AlienWareFXTester fails to turn it on.
I am 90% sure this is related to your program, just cant figure out how exactly.
I have heard from the tech support that the address the button uses can be the same as the hardware indicator lights you mentioned earlier. Do you have any version where I can change the power button of the AlienWare17 r4?
Thanks
Rik

Alienware LightFX DLLs

The pre-requirement to have Alienware LightFX DLLs installed on your computer is invalid when AlienFX v1.0 and/or AlienFX v2.0 DLLs are not installed by the Alienware Command Center. When these DLLs are not installed the alienfx-tools should provide them.

AlienFan Control Does Not Open

When I open the Fans and Power tab, the software just crashes.

It worked the first time I installed the software, and it was checking the overboost, but my laptop ran out of battery before finishing and now the tab doesn't work.

This is on 6.1.3.1

I tried reinstall but it doesn't do a clean reinstall, so I'm not sure what else to do.

Corresponding colours do not show correctly (17 r4)

When you use any of the application the RGB code is not loaded in correct.
System: Alienware 17 r4

Observations:
255, 0, 0 (red) shows as 255, 0, 0 (red) -> correct
0, 255, 0 (green) shows as 50, 0, 0 (shallow red) -> almost not visible
0, 0, 255 (bleu) shows as 0, 255, 0 (lime green)

255, 255, 0 (yellow) shows as 255,0,0 (red)
0, 255, 255 (cyan) shows as 50, 255, 0 (lime green) -> very minor change
255, 0, 255 (pink) shows as 255, 0, 255 (yellow)

Conclusion:
The red parameter is correct.
The bleu parameter is the green parameter.
The green parameter is a 1:5 scale of the red parameter (it looks like).

extra info about my AlienWare 17 r4
hope this is the correct section, otherwise feel free to delete this issue.
further note: The tron's on the side of my laptop do show in the probe application (the list)

    Light #7 - Left Tron
    Light #8 - Right Tron
Light #9 - LCD Panel Left
Light #10 - LCD Panel Right

But does not show when asked to test and set the name of the light.
further, the names of the zone listed are all wrong:

Light #0 - Keyboard Right -> shows nothing
Light #1 - Keyboard Middle Right -> shows nothing
Light #2 - Keyboard Middle Left -> Keyboard Left
Light #3 - Keyboard Left -> Keyboard Middle Left
Light #4 - Alienhead -> Keyboard Middle Right
    Light #5 - Logo                   -> Keyboard Right
Light #6 - Touchpad -> Alien head (on the back)
    Light #7 - Left Tron              -> Logo
Light #8 - Right Tron -> Does not appear in test
Light #9 - LCD Panel Left -> Does not appear in test
Light #10 - LCD Panel Right -> Does not appear in test

Wrong dGPU temperature on Dell G15 5510

Describe the bug
The software is incorrectly reporting the GPU temperature, it is probably reading an ambient temperature sensor, just like AWCC does.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Just use it on a Dell G15 5510

Expected behavior
It would be interesting if the software read the actual temperature of the dGPU, as well as other software (such as GPU-Z and MSI Afterburner), to be able to define a temperature curve for the dGPU too

  • OS: Windows 11 Pro 21H2 22000.739
  • Google Chrome (64 bits)
  • Version 102.0.5005.115

Additional context
The same error happens using the AWCC, I don't understand if this is an ambient temperature sensor, but it appears to be, as the temperature slowly increases during use.

Ambient lighting wont work

I have an Alienware 15 R4 laptop. I can install and run all the software and stuff. I can probe and test each light. When I open the GUI I don't have a problem setting colors, but when I run the Ambient, they dont change, I select each section as described, but my keyboard remains the color I left it as tested in the GUI.

AW3821DW support

Similar to #56 ('AW3420DW support'), I have an AW3821DW and would like to assist where possible in order to achieve responsive ambient lighting i.e. detecting on-screen zone colours and matching the rear lights to these as close to real-time as possible with minimal latency.

Please let me know how I can contribute! Thanks.

Events should overwrite other monitor types only on its "on" state

Describe the bug
As manual described, "Event colour always override Performance one then triggered, as well as both override Power state."
However currently it's not "triggered", it's "off" state overrides other monitor types as well, makes "mix monitor types" meaningless.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
1.Set multiple monitor types
2.The color will always match "off" state of "Event" events, event it's condition not satisfied ("off" state)

Expected behavior
The "On" state of "Event" should have the highest priority, but the "Off" state shouldn't.

Screenshots

System (please complete the following information):

  • Model: Alienware m15 R6

Additional context
There're other strange behaviors in the "Event Monitoring" section, however I cannot distinguish whether they're bugs or by design.

Alienfan Not working at insider Windows 11 release

Describe the bug
When trying to open alienfan-gui.exe it says can't install driver, check system configuration!
I am using the latest version as of writing this
I started happening after I updated to the latest windows insider dev build.
I have also tried olders version and they show the same error

To Reproduce

  1. Download latest windows 11 insider dev build and try and run alienfan-gui.exe
  2. See pop-up saying can't install driver, check system configuration!

Functions to allow changing power options.

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Currently, In order to change battery charging and power settings we need to use My Dell App, which starts multiple background services. Plus it has less features than it's predecessor Dell Power Manager. There is not function to enable peak shift or allow charging to 100% at specific time.

Tools like Dell Command Configure is not available on Alienware and G series gaming laptops.

Describe the solution you'd like
Implementing charging controls to AlienFX tools or creating new app will allow more control over charging controls without needing My Dell App. As far as I understand, alienfx-tools already uses proprietary function calls so it would not be very difficult to implement the functionalities.

G-mode does not activate at startup

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
G-mode is not saved to apply at startup, so you have to apply it every time you turn on your computer

Describe the solution you'd like
It would be interesting if the G-mode was applied automatically at startup, as it is done in the fan curve.

Describe alternatives you've considered
I didn't think of anything.

alienfx-ambient seems to crash the rgb controller for my dell g5 5500

so i managed to get the lighting zones for the lightbar mapped to names and even set up the ambient screen map how i wanted. it works for about 15-30 seconds but then the bar goes black and stays black no matter what i do. even starting AWCC doesn't allow changes to work. i don't know if this is a known issue or if i am unique but for now ambient is unusable. my guess is it issues commands too quickly and overwhelms the controller causing a unrecoverable crash to happen. well, it can recovery, though only after a system reboot. its a bummer but it looks like the ambient mode just can't be used right now.

Dell G5SE - "Supported hardware not detected"

Describe the bug
Seems G5 SE 5505 (4800H / 5600M) is not supported even though it seems like it should be

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
I used latest version (4.2.2), UAC disabled, ran alienfan-gui / cli as admin, got the "supported hardware not detected" error.

Expected behavior
Able to control fans of my laptop.

Screenshots

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • OS: W10 x64 20H2 (19042.1202)

Additional context
I read about needing test mode but also read that you don't need it anymore due to some kind of driver hack. I didn't get any warning or so so I assume the hack is working - but the control is not.

I can help with providing any dumps that may be needed.

Add G-mode switch to G-series

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
I used to be able to have Alienware control center open with alienfan-gui and alienfan-gui would work as normal.
I did this so that I could use the G-mode from alienware control center to boost my GPU's tgp to 130 watts instead of 115 watts.
Unfortunately it seems that having Alienware control center open with alienfan-gui breaks alienfan-gui now with a new update, so I have uninstalled alienware control center and alienfan-gui is back to working as normal.

Describe the solution you'd like
Would it be possible to add the GPU boost to alienfan-gui when I click the G-mode button or if I change the power mode or GPU limit in alienfan-gui

Model: Dell G5 15 5515 (Ryzen Edition)

Thanks

ACPI fan control driver is incompatible with Windows 11

As reported by testers, ACPI control driver used for fan/power control is incompatible with Windows 11.
It provides BSOD with "Unhandled kernel exception" then used.

I have no W11 system to check it right now, so this issue postponed until i update one of my systems.

I could't make this work using python

Hi, T-Troll, thanks for your great work. I'm referencing your code to work on a python version of alienfx.
But my code has no effect at all. The keyboard light doesn't light up or turn off.
Could you help me check my code if there's anything wrong?
Great thanks to you! I have studied for many days but they all failed.

Fan control not working

Describe the bug
Alien fan control has stopped working

image

I just restarted my computer and now it's decided not to work
My laptop didn't update or anything

I have tried 5.9.1, 5.9.2 and 5.9.3
They all have the same result

My friend who also has the same laptop is experiencing this problem as well

Add support for AW 15R2 [Comes under Echo series 13R2, 17R3]

Describe the bug
Didn't detect it as supported device eventhough it uses same lighting as 13R2 and 17R3. Also had to copy LightFX.dll to root folder for alienfx-prober 26[number of zones] to detect the lighting zones properly.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Unusual delay while detecting the zones via prober in cmdline
  2. Sometimes the color changes correctly and sometimes it doesn't
3.Attached a screenie with device pid, api version and vid.

Expected behavior
A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen.

AlienFan Control - Expose more gpu/cpu temp sensor for control by fan curve

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
I have been looking for a way to control the front fans for my R12 via the gpu temps. The gpu temp exposed via the fan control is the gpu internal thermister (fig1 34C) . I was hoping to be able to use the memory junction temp (fig1 92C) or whatever hwinfo exposes as the gpu temperature (fig1 53C)

image
fig1 - HWiNFO64 GPU Temperature & Memory Junction Temperature, AlienFan Control

Describe the solution you'd like
If possible, more Temperature Sensors exposed to control the fan curves. Specifically the gpu memory junction and the gpu temperature.

Describe alternatives you've considered
I can currently use the gpu temp exposed via the fan control to control the fans via the gpu temp. But this temperature is much different that the temps reported by HWInfo64, and so doesnt provide the direct fan to temperature connection that I was initially hoping

Additional context
PS, I love this utility. the amount of tuning you can do when setting a fan curve is great; compared to AWCC this is already a much better tool.

Alienware 15 R3 Light Help

Hello! , I found your project and it was my last hope but sadly I can't get it to work.
I recently bought this laptop off facebook marketplace and everything works fine except there's no lighting on anything.
I've tried everything I found on google , from fresh install w10 , installing/reinstalling ACC , uplugging battery, updating bios .

The laptop is a Alienware 15 R3 with a 1080 max-q

--- Info about Alienware command center (idk if it matters but, going to label it incase you want to skip it)- ---
When I open AlienFX I get a box titled
"ALIENWARE ALIENFX "

The theme you are opening is not compatible with this computer. You will not be able to apply the theme.

I would try to change the color and it would give me this error

Using version 3 3.0.0.2 (BETA 3)

I installed alienfx tools ran " alienfx-gui " and I get the error
"No alienware light devices detected, exiting!"

Running "alienfx-probe" opens a cmd box for a millisecond and closes

None of the other files show any devices .
The only one that shows me something is "alienfx haptics" >input > default input devices
other than that it doesn't seem to work for me.

Do you think you could help me??

I did notice that ACC stop giving me the error after installing your software. but lights still don't work.

Thank you<3

Bug Fan Controller

Describe the bug
I have the following problem: when I restart my computer after using alienfx, when I restart alienfx, the fan controller does not work, and in the worst case, I have a blue screen and the pc restarts

To Reproduce

  1. Start Alienfx with fan controller
  2. Restart windows
  3. Restart Alienfx with fan controller
  4. In the worst case, when I click OK to close the error window, blue screen and reboot.

Expected behavior

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Firefox
  • Version alienfx : Last one (I already had this problem with the previous versions)

Per-key lights keyboard support

Discussing issue related to per-key devices (m17r3 as an example):

When I used alienfx-gui first time, it didn't show any devices (Or after pressing "Reset"). But after alienfx-probe there is just one device with name "Alienware m17 R3 Advanced KB". Now even it's keyboard, no matter what ID I will add for lights (for ex. 0-108) it will not change color of the keys. Instead it will change color of the laptop.

PS I can enter Device name manually. For ex. "Device [ID]". But this doesn't work as well.

Entry for Alienware M15 R6 into device database

Alienware M15 R6 is currently not supported.

I am currently using it and I'd like to make a pull request for it.
Where do I start to code the support for it for other developers to use?

Can't init AlienFX at some rig (f.e. Alienware 17 R5).

Hi @T-Troll thank you for creation of alienfx-tools v0.4.5. However, there was no response from the updated alienfx-cli.exe or the alienfx-haptics.exe applications.

Our Alienware 17 R5 Laptop has:-
(1) The LightFX.dll file installed in both Windows > System32 and SysWOW64.
(2) Program Files > Alienware > Alienware Command Center has 67 items and these include AlienFX.dll and Alien64.dll files, but not AlienFX Tester, etc.
(3) Program Files (x86) > Alienware > Media Plugin > x64 with the LightFX.dll file installed.

We have the legacy AWCC Suite v5.1.18.0 installed and clicking on the FX tab does not work. Not sure when Alienfx v2.0 was required for 17 R5. Dell support service tag says the current AWCC Suite is v5.2.89.0, but there is no FX tab when this is installed.

Our Alienware laptop out of the transit box, was dark and continues to be dark, despite having the pre-installed Alienfx hardware. It would be great if we could turn the keyboard lights on.

Low brightness at v1-v3 devices

Alienware m15 R1 alienfx-cli not doing anything

I am unable to set my Alienware lights using "alienfx-cli.exe". alienfx-gui.exe does work, but it does not save the settings and I need to change them each time I boot up.
alienfx-gui:
image
I can add all the lights and set them, but after a reboot all lights are not listed and I see the window above - even after saving the profile.

However, I would rather use alienfx-cli as I like the command line.

D:\Downloads\AlienFX\alienfx-tools>alienfx-cli.exe status
alienfx-cli v1.0.0
Device ID#1360
Done.

I'm not sure if this behaviour is correct or not. When I enter the following, nothing happens to the lights at all:

D:\Downloads\AlienFX\alienfx-tools>alienfx-cli.exe set-all=0,0,255
alienfx-cli v1.0.0
Done.

Max. temperature - doesn't trigger?

Using a Dell G5 5000, light works fine with GPU load, CPU load etc, but when I select Max. Temperature, I can move the slider right over to the left and it still won't trigger the 100% flag so the colour doesn't change on the Desktop LED.

Question

Excuse me, but I have a Dell G5 (PID is 550, and it has 4 Keyboard Zones but no other lights and I want this app to work standalone. Which files does this need to work without keeping AWCC (os is this impossible?), and should I simply copy them to the program folder or do they need to be elsewhere?

Dell Alienware Aurora R7

hi, I can't get alienfx-tools to work yet, seeking help :-)

  • Just downloaded from here today, 0.9.0.
  • Windows 10 home 10.0.19043.
  • Alienware Command Center 4.8.20.0 installed already.
  • AlienFX Tools 3.1.200 installed already.
  • Aurora R7, 0VDT73, Bios 1.0.23, i3 8100, 8gb ram single stick, GTX 1060 3gb.
  • I can successfully run AWCC and change all the lights (there are 3 zones: the power button, the right case panel, the left case panel).
  • AlienFX, AlienFusion Windows Service both appear as status Running.
  • Doesn't appear to matter if I am running powershell as Administrator.
  • I did install the old DirectX stuff and rebooted and that didn't fix it.
  • There isn't anything for "enable 3rd party apps" that i can see anywhere in AWCC. Ah, the Windows task bar tray Alienware entry has a right-click menu, and allow 3rd party was on.
PS C:\Program Files\AlienFX Tools> .\alienfx-probe.exe
alienfx-probe v3.1.1
For each light please enter LightFX SDK light ID or light name if ID is not available
Tested light become green, and turned off after testing.
Just press Enter if no visible light at this ID to skip it.

Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition Fan Control Not Working

Describe the bug
An Error Message is thrown That it's not supported.

Expected behavior
Should Work As I Used an Old Version Before But After Bios Update it Broke

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition
  • Windows 10 21H2

Can't init AlienFX v2.0 at some rig (e.g Alienware 17 R5)

AlienFX v2.0 code is used to enable the LED lights on the current versions of Dell and Alienware computers. The Alienware Command Center (AWCC) install application's code fails to handshake with the Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) code on the System Board. Consequently, the AWCC install application refuses to install the AWCC AlienFX v2.0 applications and there is no AWCC FX tab. The Dell or Alienware LED Lights remain dark and inaccessible.

However, alienfx-tools could install code to handshake with the EEPROM code on the System Board and get the AlienFX LED Lights to work. It would be great if the keyboard lights could be switched on and off.

Flickering keyboard after applying 'rainbow' profile

One of the 4 zones is flickering between Green and red right now, I was trying to test out the GUI applet to build a custom 'slower' moving color cycle when the software crashed and ever since then the left zone of the keyboard is flashing between my two test colors. Is there a way to reset the RGB hub to overwrite the settings? I tried a reinstall/wipe of AWCC, dropped the profile data from your tool set, and nothing works. its constant and starts at power on (POST).

Is the "Low battery" condition reversed?

Describe the bug
Theoretically the "Low battery" event should have "on" state when below battery level, and "off" state when beyond.
Currently it's "off" when below and "on" when beyond

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Set effect mode to "monotoring"
  2. Use "event monitoring" and set "low battery" event
  3. You'll see the bug described above.

Expected behavior
As described

Not a UI bug, no screenshots

Fan Boost Value Changed

Hey just wondering if you would be able to set the max fan boost to 170

I'm not sure what has changed but it seems now that boost 170 is now the max RPM for my fans
Boost 160 is about 5100RPM while boost 170 is around 5700RPM

Thanks

Btw if you have forgotten which laptop I have it's the Dell G5 15 (AMD)
Thanks again

Possible bug in Profiles - Active program doesn't change the colours if an app already open

So I created a couple of profiles to test the switching.

Chrome - Green
Citrix Workstation - Blue
CoinOps Next2 - Red

They all work fine on their own, and closing the app moves the colour back to default.

However, if I open Chrome, the light turns green (as it should) then I open Citrix, the light stays green.
If I then close Chrome, the light will change to blue as expected.

Is there a way to make the active window trigger the colour change? So if I tabbed between three open apps, it would dynamically change (this is how AWCC was working for me).

AlienFX Control does not work ( X15 R1)

Describe the bug
The AlienFX Fan Control and AlienFX Monitor seem to work fine. However, the AlienFX Control (Shortcut) does not start or seems to silently crash when executed.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Attempting to start AlienFX Control through the shortcut.

Expected behavior
AlienFX Control should start when the shortcut is executed

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • OS: Windows 11
  • Version: 6.1.3
  • System: Alienware X15 R1

Additional context
I would like to help by providing logs or such but I have no knowledge of C++ or H. Can you help me help you?

Version 2.X.X not working on G5 5590

Hi, its me again!

So, I was on 1.2.0 and almost everything was working well, except for a small-ish bug when I tried to set all colors. Since I only have 4 keyboard zones, it wasn't a big problem. Then v2+ came and...

Well, I can't even open the program. Well, I can, but nothing happens.

Anyways, no pressure, just letting you know. And as it ocurred to me as I was writing this, is there a possibility that this happened because I haven't touched the latest versions of AWCC and my keyboard firmware needs update?

G-Mode state toggles when opening/closing alienfan-gui

Describe the bug
G-Mode state is toggled when opening/closing alienfan-gui. If G-Mode state is on, it toggles to off when opening/closing alienfan and vice-versa.

To Reproduce
Here's a video showing the behavior when closing the application. Same behavior when opening:

Expected behavior

Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition
Windows 10 21H2
AlienFX-Tools Version 6.1.1.0

AW3420DW support

Is there any way to get support on AW monitors? It's separate from the laptop and desktop drivers from what I can tell.

The are a lot of light all around this monitor and its stand so I had this dream where ambient mode plus these lights
will serve as sort of an extension of the screen and look real cool, Phillips Hue style.

If there any way I can help with making this happen I would be glad :)
