2.07 Custom Formats

Custom Formats are a way to completely automate checks if one or more of your Custom Formats might match against the Release or File name. A custom format has so called "Format Tags". These tags describe how Radarr tries to match a release or file (i.e HEVC, x264, x265, atmos, dolby, dts and much more).

My Radarr configuration only want 4K movies if they match a referred sequence of ranked audio formats. Upgrading stops when at least one Custom Format match is above the profile cutoff.

However, if Radarr can't find a 4K release, then it should search for a 1080p release. To achieve this we create a new Profiles called 4K > HD-1080p with a range of media qualities ranked from our preferred Remux-2160p to HDTV-1080p - a range of 8 media quality settings. Then we apply our Custom Formats to the 4K > HD-1080p profile for further matching (i.e HEVC, x264, x265, atmos, dolby, dts and much more).

Before creating the 4K > HD-1080p profile first create your Custom Formats by clicking on the Custom Formats tab.

The following examples of Custom Formats search for movies containing audio, compression and dynamic range (SDR or HDR) requirements:

  • Lossless Object Surround: Dolby TrueHD Atmos and DTS-X
  • Lossless Surround: Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and DTS-HD MA
  • HQ Object Surround: Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos
  • HQ Surround: Dolby Digital Plus and DTS
  • Surround Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
  • Generic Surround: Files or releases without one of the above codecs but containing 5.1/7.1 in the name

I also add matching criteria for HEVC and/or HDR 10bit to my audio quality search criteria (ignoring all SDR).

A) Custom Formats - 4K, 10bit HDR & Atmos compatible systems The following is my configuration. Its applicable for a 4K HDR 10bit TV, Atmos capable audio reciever or soundbar and a Kodi player (i.e LG OLED C9, Samsung Atmos Q90R soundbar and a Odroid N2 Coreelec built player). Modify to meet your installed equipment. Note the ranking numeric 1 to 9 - it makes it easier to maintain correct ranking when enabling in your quality Profile (i.e 4K > HD-1080p).

2.08 Configure Profiles

Each box in the Profiles tab shows a list of allowed qualities. For a movie that is assigned the "Any" profile, radarr will search for all qualities in the list, and choose highest match found.

You may create new Profiles with specific qualities in any order you wish to use with higher priority qualities at the top, and lower priority qualities at the bottom.

The following is a custom profile for 4K > HD-1080p.

A) Create a new Profile - 4K > HD-1080p

This Profile is applicable for a 4K HDR 10bit TV, Atmos capable audio reciever or soundbar and a Kodi player (i.e LG OLED C9, Samsung Atmos Q90R soundbar and a Odroid N2 Coreelec built player).

Create the new profile by clicking the + icon. Complete the form as follows making sure of the order of Custom Formats.

alt text

B) Delay profiles

You can set up Delay Profiles to wait to download preferred releases until after a certain time has elapsed, this will allow extra time for releases with your preferred tags or cutoffs to be released.

For example, my delay profile will wait one day to start the download, and if any releases containing my preferred tags come across it will be preferred over others that do not have the preferred tags.

I recommend to set as follows:

Delay Profile Value Notes
Protocol Prefer Usenet
Usenet Delay 1440
Torrent Delay 1440

3.00 Create & Restore Radarr Backups

Radarr has a built in backup service. Radarr will execute a backup every 7 days creating a zip file located in /home/media/.config/Radarr/Backups/scheduled.

But it's good idea to make a clean backup of your working Radarr settings, including all settings such as passwords etc, before adding any movie media. The clean backup file MUST be stored outside of the Proxmox Radarr LXC container for safe keeping. Then in the event of you needing to recreate your Radarr LXC you can use this backup file to quickly restore all your Radarr settings.

This backup file must be named radarr_backup_base_settings.zip and be located on your NAS in folder /mnt/backup/radarr for the following scripts to work.

3.01 Create a Base Settings Backup

Perform after you have completed Steps 1.00 or Steps 2.00. This file must be stored on your NAS for future rebuilds

Browse to http://192.168.50.116:7878 and login to Radarr. Click the Systems Tab > Logs Tab > Table/Files/Updates Tabs and click Clear Logs on all.

Then click System Tab > Backup Tab and click Backup to create a new backup file which will be shown with a name like radarr_backup_2019.09.24_05.39.55.zip. Now right click on this newly created file (at the top of list) and save to your NAS share /proxmox/backup/radarr (locally mounted as /mnt/backup/radarr). Rename your backup file from radarr_backup_2019.09.24_05.39.55.zip to radarr_backup_base_settings.zip.

3.02 Restore to Radarr Base Settings

With the Proxmox web interface go to typhoon-01 > 116 (radarr) > >_ Shell and type the following:

sudo systemctl stop radarr.service &&
sleep 5 &&
rm -r /home/media/.config/Radarr/nzbdrone.db* &&
rm -r /home/media/.config/Radarr/config.xml &&
unzip -o /mnt/backup/radarr/radarr_backup_base_settings.zip 'nzbdrone.db*' 'config.xml' -d /home/media/.config/Radarr &&
chown 1605:65605 /home/media/.config/Radarr/nzbdrone.db* &&
chown 1605:65605 /home/media/.config/Radarr/config.xml &&
sudo systemctl restart radarr.service

3.03 Restore the lastest Radarr backup

If you want to restore to your last backup (this backup is a maximum of 7 days of age) use the Proxmox web interface and go to typhoon-01 > 116 (radarr) > >_ Shell and type the following:

sudo systemctl stop radarr.service &&
sleep 5 &&
rm -r /home/media/.config/Radarr/nzbdrone.db* &&
newest=$(ls -t /home/media/.config/Radarr/Backups/scheduled/*.zip | head -1) &&
echo $newest &&
unzip -o "$newest" 'nzbdrone.db*' -d /home/media/.config/Radarr &&
chown 1605:65605 /home/media/.config/Radarr/nzbdrone.db* &&
sudo systemctl restart radarr.service

4.00 Add Content or Existing media

Browse to http://192.168.50.116:7878 and login to Radarr. Click the Add Movies Tab and type in the name of the movie you want. In this example we search for 'Shawshank'. Now most important are the following settings:

alt text

Add Movies Value Notes
Path /mnt/video/movies/ The most important setting
Monitor Yes
Min Availability Physical/Web
Profile HD-1080p Change to Ultra-HD if you have a 4K TV

And click Add + or Search.
