Actually, one other quick idea...
Allow checksums on the "proof" posts on the social networks as well. This allows a onename compliant app to ensure the proofs haven't been modified (either in the event the service allows modification of a post or in the event the service is compromised).

Hm, I do like the idea of checksums for images.
Regarding checksums of proof posts, not sure I see the same value, as the script that is scanning the proof is looking for a very specific set of text.

It would also be nice to allow a signed message for bitcoin (and ilk) addresses, so a "Verified" badge could be given for the address too.

Good call! We should definitely add this.

I've been thinking about what should be signed... I think all we need to sign is the onename and the address used to register it, so like sign "u/ricmoo-NEcgCRGsHtDjsApj3p11NbZprHJDeTMEjx".
This can also be determined from the namecoin entry, so the string being signed doesn't even need to be included in the payload.

Much has changed since this discussion. If you would like to reopen the issue please do so on one of these three repos:
Closing as stale.

If not picking this up again somewhen, we could consider to state this somewhere in API docs under security implications.
Profiles are completely verified, but some additional information are just links to unverified additions. We should warn developers thinking that certain things are verified when they're just links without content hashes.
