Enhancement Request: wbar-config optional

The main project page seems to tout a small number of dependencies as a feature:

It uses Imlib2 to do the image processing
It rides just on top of Xlib, no other toolkits.

Unfortunately, the wbar-config program, being built against gtk+, has lots of
additional dependencies. (glib, pango, cairo, etc.) This is a possible issue
for users who run a QT-only system (or any other toolkit that's not gtk+) and
do not want to have to install all of those libraries just to use wbar. It
really doesn't need them if you are willing to work directly with ~/.wbar, at
least not as far as I can tell.

It would be nice to split the config program into its own package, or at least
provide a "--disable-config" ./configure option so that only the lightweight
"wbar" program can be built for users who do not want the gtk+ config program.

For the Gentoo ebuild, if the user does not have the "gtk" use flag set, I have
patched configure.ac and src/Makefile.in so it doesn't test for gtk+/glade and
doesn't build or install wbar-config. Please let me know if this is
objectionable and I will remove the conditional compile and just require
everyone to install wbar-config and the gtk+ stuff.

Auto disappear and background problem

First of all, a suggestion: an auto-disappear feature will be very useful.
I mean the possibility of the wbar to disappear and appear when the mouse
is in some border of the screen (e.g., like the kde4 plasma add widget button)

Second: I see you are not using a true transparent window. This can be a
problem if the wbar starts over a (part of a) window, or even if the
desktop wallpaper changes (the background is the one that was behind the
wbar when it was started)

I'm on a Linux machine, Kubuntu 8.04.1, KDE4.1

Start session

When i start my xsession, i use only a wm not a De and i've tried with
Pekwm and Openbox, the wbar even if i've configurated it with wbarconf to
place at the top, it's placed on bottom and has a black backgorund, so it
isn't correct maybe it's a wbar bug

Enter one-line summary

Reproducing the annoyance:
1- Start wbar
2- put a window partially over it
3- right click on wbar to refresh
4- close the window
5- wbar shows the piece of window that covered it
6- you have to right click wbar again to refresh its background

It would be great if you could specify an auto refresh gap, so the background
would get refreshed automatically every time.

GREAT, project, please don't abandon it.

Happy hacking!!

wbar-config color filter

Steps to reproduce problem
1. open wbar-config effects tab
2. check color filter mode and select filter type
3. update, (does not apply or allow to change color)

What should happen, what does happen.
A color filter should show as well as open the color option, instead color
filter does not show nor the color option ability.

Additional notes
color filter works through command line, not through wbar-config
Looks great, please continue with this project.

Mistakes in the packaged wbar.cfg with wbar-2.1.1

In etc/wbar.cfg.in, it refers to "openoffice.png" but the icon that is provided
is called pixmaps/ooffice.png. This generates the following error when running
the program:

/usr/share/pixmaps/wbar/openoffice.png Couldn't load icon image.

Nothing serious, the user can fix it in ~/.wbar, but the icon should be
renamed, or the wbar.cfg.in file should be fixed so they agree.

Also, the default font in wbar.cfg.in is the rather unusual
"/usr/share/fonts/truetype/dustin/PenguinAttack". It should probably be changed
to something that end-users might actually have installed on their system.
Maybe something from corefonts or liberation-fonts?

WBAR appear behind gnome-panel

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Running this fantastic bar with gnome it appear below the panel. it s
quiet boring (see attached picture WBAR_bellow1.png)
2. So I make a quick patch to be able to add an offset to make it appear a
little bit above the panel (see attached picture WBAR_offset1.png)

3. To use this patch just add this keyword when launching the wbar "-offset
<number of pixel"
4. I flagged all my modifications with following lines:
// Patch AH - Add offset margin for not being below panels

Note: this offset is working with bar at the bottom or at the top.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I am using the latest version under RedHat

Thanks a lot for this light BAR!

Vbar option

There's a grave bug, if you set wbar to appear vertically, as soon as you
restart it, wbar appears at bottom center, and only if you open wbarconf
and click on refresh it will take the correct position, why this happens?
Can anybody fix this problem?

osxbarback.png -> image not found

Upon running wbar in the terminal I get this error message:

$ wbar
Using /home/hailsanta/.wbar config file.
/usr/local/share/wbar/iconpack/wbar.osx/osxbarback.png -> Image not found.
Maybe using a relative path?

I'm running wbar 1.3.3_4 on FreeBSD 8.0 (Openbox WM)

The file does exist in that directory. If I change the path in wbarconf or
manually in the .wbar config file, a corresponding "Image not found." is
displayed in the terminal.

I deinstalled and reinstalled after updating my ports collection, but still
have the same message.

Feature Request:: "Do Not Maximize Over"

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start Fluxbox or another WM with no support for Margins
2. Start WBar, either manually or through WM startup script
3. Open any window and maximize it
4. Grind teeth as window maxes over WBar

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I see what I expect to, just wish it weren't so...

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
WBar version 1.3.3 on Gentoo Linux 64-bit

Please provide any additional information below.
Someone in #fluxbox on freenode suggested submitting a feature request/bug
report for this. Although I'm not a coder, I know there are supposed to be
standard WM hints for "struts" that could be used to implement this
feature. Some WMs/DEs (Openbox and XFWM4 for example) do have margin
support, but it would be much cleaner if WBar itself had support for not
being maximized over.

unique large display, so in my dual screen configuration ( second screen

suggestion

Great application. The only features it lacks are:
1) Stay above the windows so that maximized windows don't cover it. I have
tried with iceWm options, but I failed.
2) A "reserve space for wbar" option; but this is a minor issue cause you
can obtain this with the option of your WM
3) And the end of all, a very minor issue: an arrow under the icons of
started applcations.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.3.3 on arch and 2.6.24

2.0.1 DESTDIR broken

I'm trying 2.0.1 to package but I've run into a problem with 'make install',
everything except the binaries install to the correct location using the
'DESTDIR' variable. Instead the binaries are installed to a directory called
'pkgNONE' in my current working directory.

My script looks like this (you can probably work out what the variables are
suppose to be):

    cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
    ./configure \
      --prefix=/usr \
      --sysconfdir=/etc \
      --localstatedir=/var \
      --libdir=/usr/lib${LIBDIRSUFFIX} \
      --mandir=/usr/man \
      --infodir=/usr/info \
      --docdir=/usr/doc/$pkgname-$pkgver \
      --build=$arch-slackware-linux
    make -j $numjobs
    make install DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg

Could you please rectify this?

Segfault with bad argument

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

When used with improper argument value it segfaults. E.g. wbar -p or wbar -d.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Wbar to auto start on LXDE???

i am building a distro based on Ubuntu 8.04 and LXDE... what to use Wbar in
LXDE but how to get it to auto start when the LiveCD boots in to lxde...

Original issue reported on code.google.com by [email protected] on 26 Oct 2008 at 1:17

Auto Refresh background

Reproducing the annoyance:
1- Start wbar
2- put a window partially over it
3- right click on wbar to refresh
4- close the window
5- wbar shows the piece of window that covered it
6- you have to right click wbar again to refresh its background

It would be great if you could specify an auto refresh gap, so the background
would get refreshed automatically every time.

GREAT, project, please don't abandon it.

Happy hacking!!

Installation troubles

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Please provide any additional information below.
When I try to install this Wbar it shows me the following error message:

"# make
g++ `imlib2-config --cflags` -Wall -O2    -c -o SuperBar.o SuperBar.cc
g++ `imlib2-config --cflags` -Wall -O2    -c -o SuperIcon.o SuperIcon.cc
g++ `imlib2-config --cflags` -Wall -O2    -c -o Main.o Main.cc
Main.cc: In function ‘int main(int, char**)’:
Main.cc:85: warning: deprecated conversion from string constant to ‘char*’
g++ `imlib2-config --libs`  -Wl,-O2 -o wbar XWin.o Icon.o Bar.o
IconLoader.o OptParser.o SuperBar.o SuperIcon.o Main.o
#strip wbar
"

I`ve already changed homeDir pathes so installation correctly passed
IconLoader and SuperIcon as you see. Any help here?

Add possibility to icons grow to bottom instead of to top. And load config files from other path than default to be able to load two instances of wbar at the same time. ( patch included )

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Icons always grow to top.
2. The "-config" command was removed in the new updates.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Current SVN version.

Please provide any additional information below.
This is not an bug report, i just opened the issue to provide the diff file to
fix both issues.

I added a new option to make the icons grow to bottom, here is an example:
http://i.imgur.com/NO8CU.jpg
This can be used when the bar position is "top", to be more coherent with the
bar position.

The second change adds support to load another config file instead of the
default $HOME/.wbar, this can be changed calling "wbar -config /file/to/path".
I needed this because i'm using two instances of wbar ( example:
http://i.imgur.com/SS7WZ.jpg ). The wbar reloading is working fine with other
config file too.

Is where any way to show text above icons

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. start wbar as always
2. position bottom

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Icon captions shows centered over icons.
Is where any way to move them upstairs, like a tooltip?

wbar-2.1.3 build issues

There are several issues with the build system in wbar. First, autotools seems
to be confused by the presence of 2 Main.cc files:

make[2]: *** No rule to make target `../src/config/Main.cc', needed by
`wbar_config-Main.o'. Stop.
make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make[2]: Leaving directory
`/var/tmp/portage/x11-misc/wbar-2.1.3/work/wbar-2.1.3/src'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory
`/var/tmp/portage/x11-misc/wbar-2.1.3/work/wbar-2.1.3'
make: *** [all] Error 2

This is easily worked around by renaming src/config/Main.cc to
src/config/Main-config.cc and updating Makefile.am to reflect the change.

Also, there seems to be some confusion about CPPFLAGS and CXXFLAGS in the build
system. In configure.ac you have:

CPPFLAGS="${CPPFLAGS} -Wall -Wunused -Werror -g -O2"

But I believe those are flags for the C++ compiler, not the preprocessor, so it
should be CXXFLAGS. Also, it would be nice to allow the user to override the
settings in CXXFLAGS, so it should probably be written:

CXXFLAGS="-Wall -Wunused -Werror -g -O2 ${CXXFLAGS}"

And lastly, there seems to be some confusion in src/Makefile.am about CPPFLAGS
and CXXFLAGS and it causes it to fail to link with -Wl,--as-needed. Libraries
are set in wbar_LDFLAGS when they should in fact be set in wbar_LDADD so that
libraries get set after LDFLAGS on the command line. Also, CFLAGS are being set
in wbar_CPPFLAGS where they should be set in wbar_CXXFLAGS.

Please see Gentoo bug #358557 (https://bugs.gentoo.org/358557) for more
information.

I am attaching the patch I am using on the Gentoo package to this bug report.
It changes config/Main.cc to config/Main-config.cc (a "mv" is also required
outside of the patch) and fixes the CPPFLAGS/CXXFLAGS/LDADD stuff in
Makefile.am.

filter color 2.1.0-1

sorry if I am double posting, but the problem encountered in 2.0.1-1 is marked
as fixed, however the issue is still there.

In wbar-config the filter color enters the command to run as wbar --filter
others, to make it work I ran the command in terminal as wbar --filter 2.

Icon theme

Not an issue but is there any plans for wbar to follow the icon theme in use?
great bit of code, thanks.
