Failed to Launch, Node.js not found

Been trying for hours, but on startup with plugin installed i always get:
LogRemoteControlWebInterface: Error: [Failure] Failed to Launch the Remote Control Web Interface - Couldn't find node.js installed..., Please install latest nodejs from https://nodejs.org/en/download/

on mac os x 12.2, M1

same project runs well on Windows with node 16.14.0

What i tried:

Adding node.js to the path (it already was, added subpaths just to be sure)
downgrading from 16.14.0 to 14.14.0 with nvm (since the documentation claims 14.15.5 is highest supported

Also don't see the issue documented anywhere so far.
Any ideas?

Editor crashes upon WebSocket connection

When working on a project, with this plugin built, included and enabled, Unreal Engine Editor (4.26) crashes when this sample HTML+JS app is running and connecting to the specified WebSocket port: https://docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/ProductionPipelines/ScriptingAndAutomation/WebControl/RemoteControlAPIWebsocketReference/index.html. I'm on macOS 10.15.7.
