Known issues

  • Please backup your profiles before upgrading!

  • Only Chinese simplified/Traditional and English are fully localized, some options may missing in MacType Tuner due to the strings missing in the language file. You can help with translations!

  • If you want to use MacType-patch together with MacType official release, remember to add DirectWrite=0 to your profile or you will have mysterious problems

  • If you're running 64 bit Windows, antimalware/antivirus software may conflict with MacType, because it sees MacType trying to modify running software. One possible workaround is to try running in Service Mode (recommended), or add HookChildProcesses=0 to your profile. See https://github.com/snowie2000/mactype/wiki/HookChildProcesses for an explanation

  • Office 2013 does not use DirectWrite or GDI (it uses its own custom rendering), so Office 2013 doesn't work with MacType. If this bothers you you can use Office 2010 which uses GDI or Office 2016+ which uses DirectWrite.

  • WPS has a built in defense that UNLOADS MacType automatically. The latest version has a workaround here thanks to wmjordan.

How to get registry mode back

It is no longer possible to enable registry mode via the wizard in Windows 10.

We have a detailed guide on how you can enable the registry mode manually in wiki, get your screwdrivers ready before you head over to it.

Error when Installing MacType

I tried to install the latest version on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 but at
about 75-80% through it throws an error:
"Failed to load. Error:The specified module could not be found."

Are there any prerequisites that I need to install prior to installing this? I
tried to search other issues and the wiki but found nothing similar.

Thanks,
Hassan.

Chrome address bar shadow rendered incorrectly, except on domain name

I'm new to MacType and had to play with the settings a bit to get things to
look fairly right. All is well in Chrome except for some crazy shadows in the
address bar.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Configure MacType to render text with a light, close shadow, such as by
using the configuration below.
2. Go to any page other than a website's home page, such as by manually
entering a URL in the address bar, like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeType

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

All text in the address bar should look the same. Instead, the non-domain-name
parts of URL are rendered with the incorrect shadow. It appears to be too dark
and offset in the opposite direction.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 [64-bit]
Chrome version: 21.0.1180.77 m
MacType version: 1.2012.0406.0

Hey guys, this project is wonderful, but still I'm experiencing some small
problems on my computer.

Mactype mode: Mactray privileged compatible mode
Mactype version: 2012.1022

Please feel free to contact me if further details on my system is need. I'd
love to help improve this project. Thanks.

Disable MacType automatically when using Remote Desktop Connection?

This is more of a feature request than an issue, feel free to close it if you
want! It would be nice if MacType would automatically disable it's font
rendering when connected to a machine via Remote Desktop Connection (RDP). As
it stands right now, you have to disable MacType manually when using RDP. It's
no huge deal, but would be nice to improve the RDP experience on a lower speed
connection. Not all people might want this, so maybe a setting would be even
better? :)

Kerning

I'm seeing some kerning issues with mactype. I was previously using gdipp and
it rendered fonts with better kerning (minor issues, but overall better). I've
tried different settings to get close to gdipp's rendering but never succeeded.
I'm not sure whether it's a setting problem or some deeper difference between
gdipp and mactype. I'm attaching screenshots as well as configurations.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
MacType 1.2012.0406.0
gdipp x64 0.9.1

View text that includes small fonts and the "w" letter (YouTube on Chrome,

2012_0406 on Windows 7 x64.

Please provide any additional information below.
Please see attached screenshot. Green boxes show correct kerning while red

Porting MacType back to Linux

Hello,

As I know, MacType uses patched fontconfig and freetype2, which is originally
used in most modern Linux distributions.

Could you please release the patch of fontconfig and freetype2, along with
configuration tools for Linux?

I am sorry that this may cost you much more time and energy, but it will really
be a good news for Linux users.

BTW: I have tried infinality's freetype2 patch, but it is not compatible with
some software and causes problems. :-(

Unicode strikethrough bug

Everything is seen on the first screenshot: the unicode strikethrough symbol
isn’t rendered properly (for example Georgia font (like on screenshot),
Lucida Grande etc.).

This problem does not reproduce in all fonts: cf. screenshot 2 with Tahoma
font—there it’s rendered closer to normal (still not perfectly).

Also, I think that it’s unlikely that the problem is only with one symbol,
perhaps there is some class of symbols which do all fail

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected output is a normal letter 'g' and 'j' but instead the bottom is cutout
in the text.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
MacType 1.2012.0406.0, LCD-style, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Firefox 11.0.
Same issue in Chrome 18+.

Please provide any additional information below.
This seems to happen with the font "Verdana" size 12px. I looked at many
different sites with the same font/fontsize and the output is the same.

It's not a big deal but maybe good to know if u are updating it for the future.

Posting a picture so you can see how it looks.

Keep up the good work!

Some text-shadow rendering bugs (Chrome 17)

Some sites produce unwanted effects (see screenshots) while rendering
text-shadow in chrome 17 (don’t know, maybe the effect persists in newer
chrome versions) see screenshots mactype01.png (soundcloud widget),
mactype02.png (zvooq.ru)
i’m using win2008 server r2

Also (in fact not an issue but asking for help), though I like the rendering of
mactype (especially all the possibilities for tweaking various font
properties), but still the picture provided by gdipp feels better to me. (see
screenshots: mactype03.png—mactype, mactype04.png—gdipp). just wanted to
now whether i am just stupid and there exists an ini file for mactype that
would produce a picture exactly like the latter.
Thanks in advance!

Does MacType support Chrome 18+ on Windows XP?

>What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start a recent version of Chrome (e.g. 25.0.1323.1)
2.
3.

>What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
UI and content text should be rendered with Freetype.

>What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
UI and content are not rendered with Freetype (i.e. no anti-aliasing)

>Please provide any additional information below.

As a long-time user of gdipp, I've been limited to using Chrome 17.0.963.83 in
order for text to be smoothed.

This version of Chrome is getting a little old now, so I decided to transition
from gdipp to Mactype, due to the 'Support Chrome 18+' claim on the project
homepage.

After spending a little time adjusting the various settings to match the
appearance of my gdipp configuration, I was satisfied with the results.
However it appears that the UI and content text are not actually smoothed.

May I therefore ask if MacType does actually support Chrome 18+ on Windows XP?

Thanks!
