whitepaper's Introduction

The seL4 white paper

This repository contains the LaTeX sources of the seL4 white paper.

The latest released PDF version of the white paper is available from https://sel4.systems/About/seL4-whitepaper.pdf

From the paper: This whitepaper provides an introduction to and overview of seL4. We explain what seL4 is (and is not) and explore its defining features. We explain what makes seL4 uniquely qualified as the operating-system kernel of choice for security- and safety-critical systems, and generally embedded and cyber-physical systems. In particular, we explain seL4's assurance story, its security- and safety-relevant features, and its benchmark-setting performance. We also discuss typical usage scenarios, including incremental cyber retrofit of legacy systems.

Code of Conduct

This repository and interactions with it fall under the seL4 Code of Conduct available from the seL4 website.

Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO)

This repository uses the same sign-off process as the Linux kernel. For every larger contribution (more than a few lines of change), please use

git commit -s

to add a sign-off line to your commit message, which will come out as:

Signed-off-by: name <email>

By adding this line, you make the declaration that you have the right to make this contribution under the open source license the files use that you changed or contributed.

The full text of the declaration is at https://developercertificate.org.

Building the PDF

The paper build should work on Linux and MacOs systems.

You will need the packages texlive-latex-extra and texlive-fonts-extra installed. With that, simply

make

should produce the file whitepaper.pdf.

The file references.bib is generated from a larger database not included in this repository, but the paper should build fine without this database. If make asks you if you want to regenerate the file, it is safe to say no.

whitepaper's Issues

Bibliography URLs seem to be broken/inaccessible

Hi all,
When reading the whitepaper, I noticed that the URLs in the bibliography appear to be broken (apart from the single bib entry in the extra.bib file).

I was going to open a PR to repoint these urls, but the references.bib file clearly states it is an auto-generated file so I figured the PR would be rejected: https://github.com/seL4/whitepaper/blob/master/references.bib#L1

I know this is tiny, people can search for these papers online by titles, but I wonder if the urls can be fixed ?

Broken/inaccessible URLs are:

Correct URLs hosted on Trustworthy Systems website, seem to simply need a domain prefix of: https://trustworthy.systems/ rather than https://ts.data61.csiro.au/

Btw, really good job on writing this whitepaper, gave me a good intuition of what seL4 is about!

translate and reprint request

Hi!
I am a fan of sel4 from China. Can I translate and reprint this whitepaper to China? I think this will be a great help in expanding the SEL4 community.

I will make a pull request for the Chinese version soon.

This is the website of translation: http://trialley.top/pages/53ac44/
